HI Sopiesofa.... [quote name=Is it only me who thinks they could have made the kitchen 'caddy' a less disgusting colour? I know brown is the southwark garden/food waste colour but why does it have to be the same poo colour seeing as it's obvious what it's for! I'll get over it one day or just buy a better one. Anyone recommend a good recycling bin for the kitchen? I've had a look online and their either extortionate or really ugly. I guess one with 2 equal sized sections would be best? I don't want to get one then regret it. I know I shouldn't care what it looks like as it's only a bin' date=' but I do.] ref you comment above... Over the years I have worked out a good alternative (see pic attached) to the caddies available on the market - many of which are plastic or plastic lined. I use a china bowl and a side plate (and put the plastic bag inside), china is best because it is not porous (unlike plastic) so does not absorb or retain smells. I use my horrid 'little' brown Southwark caddy (which would take up far too much space in my tiny kitchen - and look digusting!!!) as my outside bin (which more than big enough for me as I do not waste much food) and the refuse collectors are qite happy to collect from that. I now never go out and buy something new as a solution, as the waste collection requirements keep changing... just adapt something you already have... thus less smell, less hideous, less land fill... etc. Ref [Re]Design's strategies... http://www.redesigndesign.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&layout=blog&id=44&Itemid=59reuse reclaim rethink remake remind recycle

Green Dulwich turns Blue
charliecharlie replied to electricblue's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Hello Bloonoo, I think if you give someone a smaller bin and they may just think a bit more about their shopping habits and the waste they generate... for example... need tomatoes... thinks...'shall I buy this double plastic wrapped product or shall I support a local shop that uses brown paper bags' the bigger bin you have the more space for more (and more and more) packaging you have... I have now given myself a smaller bag for my bi-monthly collection to try to encourage reducing the amount of waste I create.. surely Southwark should be encouraging us to reuce our waste not increase it... http://i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/archive/00871/money-graphics-2008_871280a.jpg -

yes, of course bloonoo, we are lucky, but if you are going to implement a new waste system borough wide, at least take into consideration the street scape. You CAN design to minimise negative impact. or you could just ignore the city 'backdrop' and do something that it totally hideous, that does not consider the impact on the housing stock and front gardens... http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2010/07/29/article-1298578-0A9CB035000005DC-551_468x286.jpg BADLY thought through Southwark... and the larger bins (certainly bigger than two blue boxes) just encourage a greater volume of waste (aren't we supposed to be encouraging people to produce lest waste not more?????) Though of course Southwark will of course be making money out of the waste we chuck out... so more is more as far as they are concerned. Are you in cahoots with the supermarkets, Southwark!!!!!???? -
and of course this trend can also be applied to hoemwares http://s3.amazonaws.com/patternfish-production/pattern_picture_w496s/4919/wedgewoodpdf.pdfmain.jpg http://www.vam.ac.uk/uploads/sites/default/files/image_upload_activity/1206217652.jpg

I quite agree Salsaman, or maybe this if you want a slightly more approachable look http://static.gamesradar.com/images/mb/GamesRadar/us/Features/2010/06/World%20of%20Nintendo%202/WII51.won_10.mega--article_image.jpg

Graduate tax system seems to work pretty well for Sweden, Huguenot.... and in the UK, the current SLC (Student Loan Company) seem to be pretty sharp about keeping tabs on graduates (and payment arrangements) when graduates choose to work overseas?
-
I think the idea is a fixed percentage top-up tax (in addition to the standard tax), with a maximum payback figure... [quote name=What are the arguments for a graduate tax? Supporters say graduate tax is progressive' date=' arguing that those who have benefited most from a university education would pay most. They also say this would remove the spectre of graduating with large debts, which could deter those from poorer backgrounds from going into higher education.] If a graduate tax were to be applied the details of the system would obviously need to be defined... [quote name=What is graduate tax? Under this system' date=' graduates would start paying the costs of their university tuition when they start earning, in the form of extra 3p or so on income tax. This would mean that the more you are paid the more you pay back. There is still discussion need to define at what point in their career, or at what total repayment figure, a graduate would stop paying, and whether there should be a minimum salary before the graduate tax is triggered.]

New threshold is ?21,000 Old threshold was ?15,000 the difference between the two is only in line with inflation there is nothing "progressive" about the scheme I have bright students who (after taking one week off between end of studies and starting work) are now in their 30's, have never been out of work and are still paying off their loans. For example, I was discussing the issue with one of our Alumni on Thursday (who is 32), her interest is still ?1,000 a year and she feels that she was sold the whole loan idea on the basis that "you will never get such a great deal again, the interest rates are so low" etc and now she feels it was somewhat mis-represented. She is a Senior member of the design team for one of our major retailers, has been working consistently hard since she left college. She is still saddled with debts (think she pays 9% of her salary each year towards her loan repayments) and her fees were only ?2250 pa. Try to imagine what it would feel like to have 4 times that amount (?27000 as opposed to ?6750) round you neck!!!! when you are only 21. I am very pro the graduate tax scheme where graduates pay an addition % tax on earnings (the more you earn the more you pay, just like any other tax) with a maximum pay back figure. That way you pay for your education but you are not saddled with debts or tied to the bloody BANKS!!! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-11946585 http://www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/personalfinance/8194206/How-much-will-you-pay-for-a-university-education.html

oh yes... and the next generation of bright, educated people being beholden to the banks till they are 40 or 50 yrs old... hhhmmm.... I wonder how well they will mark themselves on that marvelous 'Happiness' index that we will all be using to gauge our moods.... (thank you David C for all your lovely patronising ideas... Big Society my arse... we are not Tellie Tubbies you know...) I smell trouble brewing BIG time!!!
