[quote name=Hi charliecharlie' date=' I think you'd need to ask Pretty Traditional why. Markets usually have a minimum stall seperation between stalls selling the same stuff. ] Thank you for your reply James, though my question (see below) was about how the focus often seems biased towards to supporting market trader's needs and businesses and less on supporting the retailers in the street. (not about why the greengrocer stopped selling bread!!!!) [quote name=I think it is very interesting the MooTown where told they could not sell bread... Pretty Traditional (the green grocers' date=' who have been trading there for 45 yrs) used to sell delicious organic bread (and I guess it was profitable for them, as they sold it for many yrs). Once Blackbird Bakery came... they stopped selling bread as I guess the bread sales all went to Blackbird... it seems to me that the focus and support is often on the market traders with less consideration for the retailers. Pretty Traditional sold bread, and Blackbird were not told they could not sell bread... does not seem that the same principles are applied across all trading issues!!!! what is going here, James? ps I am not a retailer!]

James, I am suggesting that feedback from those in the pilot scheme, will help to positively influence the scheme for borough wide implementation of food waste collect.. let's hope so anyway, otherwise there is no point in a pilot scheme!!! ps I have decided I am going to use my small caddy as my 'wheelie bin' for outside as I am sure that will be more than big enough for my weekly food waste... will add a bit of 'dead-heading' stuff to it and use brown paper bags for my garden waste..

anybody know of any other 'green' energy suppliers? (I used '...' round green cos I know there are always issues of consumption in all choices you make when it comes to energy!)

Dear James, Firstly thanks you for your input, as I have mentioned, our street is a pretty tricky one as we are a path and have no road access, plus we only have tiny garden spaces that face on a path so we have nowhere to tuck away bins etc... we already struggle to keep the minute gardens free of extraneous clutter/bins etc... when I called the dept. managing the pilot scheme they did not appear to know the configuration of the street, or know the street at all for that matter... I suspect no one had had a look to understand the constraints... so 1. I am going to suggest that someone visits to get a better undersatnding of the space (Southwark have given our street loads of awards for 'greening' and green spaces... and seem to hold us up as some sort of 'showcase' street yet on the other hand... well you get it!) 2. I am also going to suggest that they consider a Borough wide scheme (as they have in Spain and many other European countries) and that they put a green/food waste large bin along side other large recycling bins (eg the type they have in the Sainsbury's car park), which are emptied each day... most people, in the town in Spain I know well, use the bins every day for household green waste. The bins are designed to prevent animals getting in and prevent large bags being put in... seems to work there.. What do you think of this as an idea James?? 3. I've got plenty of other ideas which I will pass on and am encouraging those in our street to send in their ideas and opinions... always good in my opinion, not to roll over and accept second best (especially as it may then be rolled out borough wide!!)

oooohhh, if only you looked like the man in the purple T-shirt... I would flight to the Far East on the very next plane

I should hope so too Huge Knot... if I wasn't the jolly and saintly little soul I am, I might have been a bit hurt by your comments... but of course... you are forgiven my son!! http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_WMEmEwReHiM/SwxqwH2Za7I/AAAAAAAABAE/emBY9KpGmJ0/s1600/forgiven.jpg

[quote=charliecharlie... erm what? Because you don't like the ad climate change is no longer a problem? WTF? Were you only involved in 10:10 because it was cute? ] don't be a silly billy Hugeknot!!! you know me better than that!! and where oh where did I say 1.climate change is no longer a problem? and 2. I was only involved in 10:10 because it was cute? which side of bed did you get out of this morning (or is is it yesterday morning where you are?) http://img.shinyshack.com/l_grumpy_old_man_kit.jpg

not funny, not clever... one's so preoccupied by the vile splat and violent blowing up of bodies that the message is completely overshadowed... bad bad bad advertising I have been a member or 10:10 since it first started and now thinking again....

I don't effing believe it!!!! I rang yesterday to ask the council to take away the small plastic brown bin (will be doing food waste pilot, but will find a way to do it without contributing to the mass of plastic and bins cluttering up my street and neighbours homes) and lo!!! I seem to the only one that has had another bit of horrid plastic delivered to my house (the nasty little caddy). I would take about 6 weeks to fill the caddy... don't want it, don't like it, don't need it... please stop the visual pollution and the massive use of non renewable resources... please!!! *tries to calm down and puts caddy inside small brown bin for collection "within a week"... we'll see!*
-
North Sea gas for example is a 'non renewable resource', gas made from food waste is a 'renewable resource'... still good to use as little as possible to keep your carbon foot print down, but it like chip fat versus petrol for your car... one is the better of the two evils!

excellent excellent !!! is that windy miller PG??? and look, here you are with...hhhhmmm... some bloke on the right http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3408/3569257615_e901b18110_o.jpg ps Ruby's absolutely fine now... super confident and super happy... so no more worries in that quarter xxCC

[quote name=charliecharlie' date=' if only 1 bag of food waste, wouldn't one of your neighbours let your pop it into their brown bin? ] thanks for the suggestion, but all our tiny gardens are the same size (we are on a path and the gardens all face onto the the path and that is all the space we have... very different from putting it in your front garden for those who have one (as well as a back garden or) and I hope my neighbours will also not want to clutter up their gardens with 'plastic city'

http://www.guardian.co.uk/money/2009/dec/05/utility-warehouse-telecom-plus-distributor don't know how they compare Karter... but this article might be interesting... I like Ecotricity because of their clear and direct environmental approach... that's why I chose them

sounds good Bob... but I am happy to sort my own, just have really limited space and keep having to replan how I use my space each time they bring in a new scheme... quite happy to buy something that is more attactive but Southwark say that the collection team will not take bags that are put out for collection in any other bin (other than the brown small bin provided). I will talk to the guys that do our street, they are really nice and helpful, I am sure they will be OK about either just taking my one small food waste bag (anyway, hardly create any, as 1. we have communal composting and when full, 2. I don't create much waste... don't peel my spuds, and 3. try to eat everything I buy, cook etc... really try not to edible chuck stuff out...) this might be useful for people.... http://www.southwark.gov.uk/info/200084/recycling_and_waste/1365/a_to_z_of_waste_and_recycling/7

good for you!!! love ya girl xxCC

oh yes and I have just counted up all the elements 1. brown wheelie bin 2. green wheelie bin 3. blue box or bag 4. small brown good waste bin 5. brown food caddy 6. bag? for every other week collection of non recyclable/non food waste 7. brown paper bags (hope they are still a goer... only good element as flat pack and paper not plastic) for garden waste for those who do not have room for brown wheelie bins guys... we need some joined up thinking here.... http://nihongo.istockphoto.com/file_thumbview_approve/9813444/2/istockphoto_9813444-joined-up-thinking.jpg

yes, a few ideas... firstly the council (or designers) need to think about how to design the waste collection system so that it does not spoil the street frontages or insides of people's homes. The large brown and green bins need to be functional for the collection team and cleanable for the home user... but these have already had a bad enough impact on our existing streets. I am not suggesting this as a solution (as obviuosly too expensive) but... http://hsw.co.in/images/hints_and_tips/kitchen/top10/simplehuman_recycle.jpg there must be better solution! than this http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Au3XlP9X7wU/TIlKdtpdQxI/AAAAAAAAALU/INMXbOAxmhA/s320/Recycling3.jpg secondly I think there has not been suitable consultation or consideration into what bins/systems, etc. are best suited to a variety of domestic situations... so I would suggest better research before investing into the cost of the pilot scheme. Overall there needs to be a much more integrated approach to all the elements... the system it self is workable, but the components are not satisfactory. ps we can not share with neighbours as all our front gardens are too tiny for anyone to have one wheelie bin let alone two http://www.londongardenstrust.org/images/choumert.jpg

I have changed gas supplier to Ecotricity who match British Gas prices, as they have started importing green gas from Holland from a Food Waste mill... with the forward plan of investing in Food Waste mills for the UK. I have had electricity provided by them for some years as they invest in green energy development, and the service has been without any problem.. plus quick to get through on the phone for questions etc. I can't see a down side!!! still get ya electricity, still get your gas and.... http://www.sheepdrove.com/siteManager/sites/sheepdrove/userFiles/Image/diagrams/saved33CO2-ecotricity.jpg http://www.ecotricity.co.uk/

overall, the principle is spot on... I have changed gas supplier to Ecotricity for the very same reasons (I have have electricity provided by them for some years as they invest in green energy development), as they have started importing green gas from Holland... form a Food Waste mill... with the forward plan of investing in Food Waste mills for the UK. http://www.ecotricity.co.uk/ http://www.sheepdrove.com/siteManager/sites/sheepdrove/userFiles/Image/diagrams/saved33CO2-ecotricity.jpg However, my issues is that the visual impact on streets and homes has not been considered... (in case anyone wonders why I feel qualified to criticise... I am a Design Manager). Plus the system is not well thought through... the way to engage the user is to make it as easy as possible for them... the whole rubbish collection thing has become overly complex and (as many people live in small dwellings with limited space) overly bitty... I have a pretty good carbon foot print and have been interested in sustainable living practices since the 70's, so if I find it a turn off... then what is the non eco convert or just your average person going to feel???
