  1. Yep. They followed procedure. Referred it tot he CPS within 24 hours and the CPS decided no charges could be sucessfully prosecuted in court. Standard procedure.
  2. Just been announced that the pensioner will face no charges.
  3. Burglars always have strings of burglaries behind them and it seems these two characters come from a family of career burglars targetting elderly people. The dead burglar was already wanted. Maybe his family should think about the misery heaped on the countless victims at their hands? https://www.dailystar.co.uk/news/latest-news/694191/henry-vincent-burglar-murder-case-london-richard-osborn-brooks-pensioner

Much of the earlier posts in this conversation were pointing that out and questioning the validity of a Libdem fishing exercise.
  5. PeckhamGuy, I think your use of the word antifa just gave you away nicely. So are you a fascist sypmathiser then? A yes/no answer is all that is required. Who else would mock someone for opposing fascism after all. Troll on now.
  6. I agree with the sensible posts above. It is normal procedure to arrest and question anyone responsible for the death of another, irregardless of the circumstances. Police then have a limit of 24 hours in custody before having to make a charge or bail. This pensioner will almost certainly be bailed in due course. The Police will refer his case to the CPS who will then decide if there are any charges to be answered. The CPS as part of that will weigh up the chances of said charges holding up in court. I personally find it hard to belive that a pensioner attacked in his own home during a burglary will ever be convicted of anything, but if there were evidence that the burglar was killed in anything other than self defence, then there is a duty for Police to investigate that.
  7. In the context of democracy, you have a very valid argument Louisa, that I think most people would agree with. But as Joe says. the practical reality of dismantling wealth based privilege is another challenge. Essentially the problem is one of plutocaracy over meritocracy. I'm not sure any society in the modern world has found an answer to that.
  8. Hi DaveR I am not arguing for or against it. I was just pointing out that the notion that removing a Monarchy leads to greater equality is a myth. If we accept that money gives privilege then only doing something about that afforded privilege will address the inequality perceived to be represented by a Monarchy. Of course it is not the only way that inequality can be tackled. I'm neither Republican nor Monarchist. It just strikes me as odd that anyone would think that the Monarchy is somehow the glue that holds privilege together. I think we went past that place some time ago. I actualy completely agree with you in fact. I often argue, within political debate, that mixed economies (like Scandinavia) have the best social outcomes and that it is finding the right balance between state and free market that is the key. I would call myself a socilaist democrat because of that.
  9. But Louisa. That is not what happens in America is it? It is myth that Monarchy is the dynamic force here. It is not. Money is the dynamic force and the power that comes with it. We could easily end hereditary peerages. It would not stop the House of Lords being stuffed with privileged and wealthy people though would it? There is just no evidence that Republics are more equal than Monarchies, none whatsoever (you can go all the way back to Rome on that). Only by taking away the choices that financial privilege affords, over things like education, housing, and opportunity, can you address inequality. It is actually an argument against free market capitalism versus socialism that is the root behind class - not some single Royal Family that have no real power to do anything anyway.
  10. But then how do you explain power inequality and wealth inepquality in Republican democracies Louisa? If the Monarchy were abolished, it would make no difference to issues around wealth, class and privilege. Just look at America for an example!
  11. Ditto. So happy Iris is now back in human care and hopefully the leg injury is not too bad. What a relief for the owners and the dog.
  12. But to be fair Amy, take a look at who brought class into it. Was it those rightly calling out support for a right wing website and its contents? This whole debate is not about house prices and gentrification. It is about the inability of someone to answer to their support for the contents of that website, and worse still, deflecting from having to answer for it by arguing that class has anything to do with the valid criticism of his position.
  13. I think the only effrctive way is the gel they carry back to the nest. You have to kill them all and the most effective way is to take out the ability to reproduce. You can kill every ant that ventures out of the nest, but what good is that if the queen is not dealt with too?
  14. I use the free swim and gym access at Peckham Pulse and when it came to renewal, I was just sent a renewal for continued free use. There were no fees whatsoever - not even ?3 for the card. So it sounds to me as though Dulwich Leisure Centre have made an error with those emails. All residents of Southwark can use the gym and swim all day Friday, and after 2pm on Saturday and Sunday. Anything that encourages people to exercise, saves the NHS far more down the line in not having to treat cardiovascular and weight related diseases. Exercise can also help with mental wellbeing too. One of the best ideas the counsil had imo.
  15. I agree with JoeLeg on everything. It is only a certain kind of person that displays the inverse snobbery that PeckhamGuy and Sidebirds have. It's the kind of inverse snobbery that becomes the excuse for hate, ignornance and a lazy outlook on the world. He has no intention of answering to his view that there is 'nothing wrong' with that neo nazi website. Fortunately, his kind don't represent the working class either.
  16. He looks good to me. He must have a home although if he is not neutered he is probably not chipped either. Good luck with either finding his owner or taking him in :)
  17. Aha, so now know for sure that this survey is linked to libdem canvassing.
  18. Yes that fire is truly awful and heartbreaking.
  19. Lots of good points above. Russia has a small economy, that is her biggest problem really. And I agree that Putin has to be mindful of that. Any kind of extensive war would bankrupt her pretty quickly, as would extreme sanctions or as you all point out, tampering with one of her best revenue streams. So I don't think anything as far as war would suit her. My feeling is that all of this (and that includes all of the other things underhand that Russia and Putin have done) is that Russia likes to push at the boundaries, and be a nuisance. It's flexing muscles, and keeping dissidents afraid, to consolidate power. Russia has always played this game. I do though agree with the point made that perhpas Putin has sought to test the Western alliance. There is only one reason why Russia would have wanted Trump in the Whitehouse, or the UK out of the EU. He probably will have been surprised by the united show from not only Europe, but America too, with these diplomatic expulsions. All of those nations involved understand perfectly the bigger picture here, that the West can not afford to give Putin even one example of disunity when it comes to matters of security.
  20. Tow trucks might have been bailiffs rather than Police, or some other authority. They probably were never there for animal welfare reasons. I too echo the good wishes for those pursuing on this.
  21. I think all three of you are right. Useful distraction for May and Putin will come out fighting if pushed too far. Where do we get our gas from again?
  22. It is certainly an international show of support. T May has done well on that front. It won't make an once of difference to Putin of course.
  23. Also try tech forums on the internet Sue. You might find someone with a solution or who has managed to write a new driver. Try searching for something like 'my scanner (model number) no longer works with windows 10'. There is usually a way to roll back to previous drivers too (I can't remember how) but have solved a few problems like this that I have had, thanks to some bright spark on a tech forum. Good luck.
  24. Sounds like a clear case for the RSPCA now. If the dog is underweight, it could have some underlying condition that is not being treated rather than being underfed. The RSPCA should now surely respond to this?
