....and of course if he tried to at East Dulwich Station it would probably collapse.

From the Independent - April 24th Meeting community activists in a church hall in Herne Hill, south London this week, [Ken] Livingstone was visibly relaxing into his more popular persona. Sitting next to the Blairite minister for the Olympics Tessa Jowell, he cheerfully described the private train operating companies as "rapacious thieving criminals" At least you can't accuse him of sitting on the fence on this issue.

  4. Talking about more local secondary schools, these have improved greatly in recent years - particularly Charter and Kingsdale. Here's a like-for-like comparison 1995 to 2007 (remember these all have a comprehensive intake): Dulwich High School for Boys (previously William Penn) 1995 11% of pupils attained 5 A* to C Now The Charter School 2007 61% of pupils attained 5 A* to C Kingsdale 1995 6% of pupils attained 5 A* to C 2007 59% of pupils attained 5 A* to C Waverley 1995 18% of pupils attained 5 A* to C Since Sept. 2006 this has been the Harris Girls' Academy East Dulwich 2007 38% of pupils attained 5 A* to C

    Teachers Strike

For what it's worth, since 1995 average pay has increased in real terms (ie adjusted for inflation etc) by 14% for teachers and up to 25% for secondary heads according to this (see second table): Teachers' Pay Hansard These figures only go to 2005 but I doubt they will have dropped off a cliff since then.

  9. Not unless its June 16th already he didn't - just one recommendation that was argued forcibly against by the Crown according to the report. Sentencing sdjourned for two months.

When you say 'the start' do you mean they actively supported you before the community council made its decision?

Oooh I bought a couple - assuming Debi is not a really common first name amongst East Dulwich writers - one of each in fact.
  13. I may not have been clear, but the link I provided above takes you directly to a page with a downloadable guide which tells you what you need to do and has lists of all the local schools with nursery classes (Heber, Goodrich, Goose Green, St Anthony's etc) and their contact details. It's divided into two parts: Part 1: Starting Nursery or Primary School - Part 1 Part 2: Starting Nursery or Primary School - Part 2
  14. This should be helpful: http://www.southwark.gov.uk/YourServices/educationandlearning/Admissions/startingprimary.html
  15. I don't think it will have an impact on the Harris Academy. The Harris Federation appears to use 'straight line distance from the school' rather than having a designated catchment area. Boundary changes? The ward boundaries are changed to ensure there are roughly the same number of electors in each ward. That's why you can end up with funny quirks like the boundary on the eastern side near Dunstans Road, Goodrich Road and Hillcourt Road (it looks a bit like 'The Wash') which looks like a case of lumping a few extra properties in to make up the numbers. The last review was completed in 1999: http://www.boundarycommittee.org.uk/files/dms/london-southwark_6157-5761__E__.pdf These boundaries are also used for other things like the Police Safer Neighbourhood Teams which are ward based: http://www.met.police.uk/saferneighbourhoods/boroughs/southwark/saferneighbourhoods.htm Oh and, apparently, the Southwark Alliance.
  16. Looks like they've put it where access to the platforms is rather than the more usual access to the station
  17. It is coterminous with the Local Authority ward boundaries http://www.southwark.gov.uk/Uploads/FILE_33273.pdf and includes the wards of: Brunswick Park, Camberwell Green, South Camberwell, East Dulwich, Village and College. The original map itself was prouced by 'Graphics & Mapping' in the Regeneration Department of Southwark Council (see bottom right of map)

I think it would have gone: GIP (Gipsy Hill); TOW; 693; 01 693; 081 693; 0181 693; 020 8693 A fascinatng (!) listing here under "Telephone Exchange Project UK" http://www.rhaworth.myby.co.uk/phreak/tenp_01.htm
  19. The key is that the two choices you are given at each stage are not random events - the probability is affected by the fact that the host knows where the booby prizes are and knowingly removes one. You have a 2/3 chance of choosing the booby prize in the first place and, if you do, switching guarantees you will win the car because the other booby prize has been removed. If you stick you keep your original 1/3 chance - switching doubles your chances of winning to 2/3.
  20. Sorry. Oh and by the way, on the other question, apparently it's the egg (I love the LONDON, England bit) http://www.cnn.com/2006/TECH/science/05/26/chicken.egg/ LONDON, England -- It's a question that has baffled scientists, academics, pub bores and contributors to the East Dulwich Forum in East Dulwich, LONDON, England (OK I added that bit) through the ages: What came first, the chicken or the egg? Now a team made up of a geneticist, philosopher and chicken farmer claim to have found an answer. It was the egg. Put simply, the reason is down to the fact that genetic material does not change during an animal's life. Therefore the first bird that evolved into what we would call a chicken, probably in prehistoric times, must have first existed as an embryo inside an egg. So what is the meaning of life..... anyone?
  21. macroban Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Is this young woman in any sense qualified to be > the BBC Economics Editor, or is she just a daddy's > girl? A slightly unfortunate reference given that I believe her father died when she was very young but I'm sure everyone knows what you mean. She might present a visual distraction for some but if that's the case just close your eyes and think of Engels etc (boom boom) - she's very good at economics and at communicating so the answer to your first question is, I think, yes. Evan is quite sexy too btw and I didn't see a similar thread when he got the job.
  22. The Oyster. Obviously. This is not a chicken and egg question - the oyster can produce the shell but the shell can't produce the oyster. Next?
  23. You heard it here first: http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?5,75817,76448#msg-76448 (para 2) Obviously I toned it down to prevent the now inevitable outbreak of buggy rage predicted by joealessi - Damn you Guardian!
