  1. Their slippery eels..
  2. Indeed, strictly speaking this is a portmanteau (where the meaning of a word is altered by conflating it with another). Portmanteaus can be a subset of neoligisms. In other words a new portmanteau will always be a neoligism, but a neoligism is not always a portmanteau. ;-) It's interesting in this case that the portmanteau doesn't carry the meaning of vegan (herbivore) but the pejorative context of vegan: faddish and selective consumption of food.
  3. There once was a she-devil called Snorky Who when told she was getting too porky Reached in her pocket
  4. I said 'this is a farce'
  5. Well strictly speaking there isn't a 'singular'. The '-ism' derives (action) nouns from verbal stems. It's derived in this case from some chap called Onan who.. "...was the second son of Judah. After his older brother Er died, Onan was required by the tradition of levirate marriage to marry Er's widow Tamar. According to Genesis 38:7-10, when he had sexual intercourse with Tamar he "spilt his seed upon the ground" because the resulting child would be considered his late brother's, not his. In response to the transgression of disobedience, God killed Onan" But that seems more like Coitus Interruptus than well, you know... And actually, come to think of it, a sound thrashing was always considered a good solution to inappropriate hand shandy in the schools I went to - but capital punishment seems a bit strong.
  6. *Bloody hell.... where did I put my nipple tassles....?* *Tortures himself over possible charges for incomplete return of belly dancing outfit to kebab and wine*
  7. BTW I guess it was a joke? Do you really believe that xG? Please K, as an epistolic mate, I can assure you that any sales pitch that talks about 'sinusoidal' impact (PHY) is talking about a bad cold and a hammer, not your next million. These gambits are created by witless and illiterate thieves who make their pennies from day-trading. They bank on conning enough willing and enviro-conscious chaps like ourselves that the share price doubles and they walk with their booty from gullible punters who can scarce afford to lose it. Please, let none of us join their ranks (either criminal or victim).
  8. BD, that's expecting MP to meet the old 'absence of proof is proof of absence argument'... unless he can prove it's safe it must be dangerous...? *Sideways glance before pulling cape over lower part of face and scurrying to shadows* That'll be the old ED Batluddite Bah! Edited upon realisation that I was 346th in line to the mental death squad brain fry widget-poking washing up cloths are filled with death and my button is whizzing your brain stuff thing is that a controlled parking zone or a brain scanner? there's people looking at my shoes...
  9. :))!! BN, that's at least two cash related questions! I think that was cover costs and go to setting up the WI. A worthwhile investment in community projects by any measure ;-)
  10. Hurrah for Viv! Welcome! MWB, yeah right... what's the capital of Estonia?
  11. Snorky knows where all the brothels are, send him/her a pm ;-)
  12. Can anyone find me a copy of Cats UK and 'Luton Airport', as inspired by the glorious Lorraine Chase?
  13. I read it as George too... isn't Corduroy Gorge kinda rude?
  14. I've my stag do... so I don't think I (and hopefully Mockney) will be able to make it... :'( However, we're considering providing some lifesize cardboard cut-outs.
  15. Hmmm, Bumbalina and her merry band of followers have been harping* on about baby blue this weekend already. We did indeed pick up said item from Morgan Davies in Islington. It was very long. It's in the spare room. I've seen colour swatches as we've had to co-oridnate with waistcoats and cravats ;-) However, Mockney still hasn't told me his measurements. What does he have to hide I wonder? *all devilish intent I suspect
  16. Well, I've just bought my suit for the wedding of the century! Hurrah! A natty overblown Italian number.
  17. BN, buggers wouldn't give me a Meerschaum, but I did get a Zinger. :)) BTW that was one on the things I got a bollocking about. I feel chastened but wiser...
  18. Bad luck on Godwin's Law Bob, I think Admin's had their eye off the ball today. ;-) I do think that a couple of the G&B comments lately smack of persecution. You would think (as Bob highlights) that some of the conclusions drawn were a bit extreme compared with the 'crime' of being extrovert and motivating your staff. Maybe there was a lapse of judgment, but is that really 'crass appalling contempt'? Neither do I think it's reasonable to describe the owner's willingness to respond to complaints as 'an efficient PR machine'. Is this how we're going to treat a friendly and engaging local trader? If we over-react to comparatively minor infringements it wouldn't surprise me if traders develop compassion fatigue and retreat from dialogue. Then we'd achieve nothing. We have the freedom to criticise, but the responsiblity to do that appropriately and proportionately. BN, I see your point on the forum not encouraging harsh words, but I don't think it's utopian. I think in the heat of the moment some of us (myself included) may have confused criticism with innuendo, insult or abuse. If we haven't managed to edit ourselves this can create a dilemma for the administrators. I've had more than one bollocking. :))
  19. Hi buggie - in research of this kind the researchers do two kinds of study - passive and active polling. It's accepted that not everyone will answer the questionnaire, so they also sample areas actively. They use the results of the active polling to alter the passive polling to deliver a more robust overall figure. The incidents such as the one you describe are then taken into account for the overall 'macro' figures.
  20. Not quite - there's not much in it: SE22 Postal District ED Electoral Ward
  21. Here's the original Macroban, it's got a map in the corner showing the ward.
  22. Indeedy - great point BN. I'm surprised that the private landlords figure is 18%, I'd come to the conslusion that the speculators were rampant, but I never really envisaged that every fifth house was a private mint!
  23. Now that would indeed be terrifying, we seem to be about 30% below averages elsewhere for that recalcitrant bunch! Incidentally if anyone else wants a play for compare and contrast time this is the link. Keef, this is sydenham ward - you appear to be inundated with ladies!!
  24. Signed - good call Nero. I think this is a useful way to highlight to Gov UK Inc. issues that have big popular support.
