Well, according to Wikipedia... Metrosexual is a word describing men who have a strong concern for their aesthetic appearance, and spend a substantial amount of time and money on their images and lifestyles. Though the term has undergone a transformation from its original meaning (a heterosexual man who appeared or acted as if he were homosexual), current trends have seen the metrosexual label placed upon male embracing of practices usually perceived to be feminine, rather than those specifically associated with stereotypically effeminate homosexuals. Debate surrounds the term's use as a theoretical signifier of gender deconstruction and its associations with consumerism. Current gender scholars view metrosexuality as representative of the embracing of relational understanding in addition to its lifestyle and aesthetic implications. Heavy going eh?
  3. Hi Scott, sorry you caught the backlash on this one - the forum can reflect real life, so I'm sure if you hear guys being abusive in a pub, you'll read them here too! Sticks and stones and all that...! Ideas get conflated in the heat of a moment. I once got accused of being homophobic, and since that was felt to be the case I was told I must be a racist too... ;-) Mostly it's good fun, and there's a strong sense of community that a lot of local traders make use of! It's usually honest healthy feedback. PS If you do a search on the Bishop you'll see me moaning about the amount of rubbish you used to heap on the pavement outside your back door - I'm glad you sorted it. I still hope that you'll find a way to recycle the huge quantity of cardboard packing cases you get through though!
  4. It's always me that has to be the sensible one isn't it??? ;-) Welcome to EDF Brief historyo of ED Transport links (including cycle paths and recommended routes) Shops by category and location Leisure open spaces Leisure paid for by category Markets (e.g. North Cross, Peckham Farmers' Restaurants by category Pubs by category Pubs that welcome kids Pub quizzes Recreational clubs -e.g. chess, scrabble Worthy clubs where ladies can get as much joy from excluding men as they can from doing anything constructive Local prejudices by exclusivity :))

    Creating a link

Hi Ko - I'm not admin, but.... Directly above where you type in your message when you post are ten buttons (one has a smiley for example). Move the text cursor to the place (click on the location) in your message you want a link and click on the planet & link symbol in this section. At this stage you may get a message at the top of your window asking for permission to allow scripted windows, you need to click on this and 'allow scripted windows'. Then a window will appear in which you should put the full address of the link (starting 'http:'). Click OK, and then a new window asks you for the text that you want to be the link. Put that in, press OK, and you have a link. It'll appear as code in your text, but click on preview bottom right and you'll see what it finally looks like. When you're happy, don't forget to click on 'Post Message' or you'll lose it!
  6. That's an excellent idea! We could twin with.. er... Peckham! More seriously... they'd need to have similar urban issues / residents / interests etc. I guess? How about an arty suburb of Montpelier or Toulouse in France? A suburb of Barcelona in Spain? The Dashanzi suburb of Beijing in China? Stanley in Hong Kong?
  7. Did you see the thread about the monkey puzzles and the cacti here..this thread. (PS there's also a lot of the usual irrelevant chit-chat, but if you wade through it there's ome interesting insights)
  8. You could put the rents up - then they'd be forced to pull their finger out, rather than jog along in mediocrity... ;-)
  9. I don't see why this kid thing is an issue: We're told on another thread that kids under 4 are 5% of the local community, so I'm going to estimate that kids under 8 are 10%. If we assume that the majority have a couple of parents/carers, then around 20% of the local adults have got kids. Significantly less than 20% of the local hostelries are kid friendly. So those adults would have greater right to complain than any of us? If you don't like kids then don't go to the Herne, the Vale or the Dog on weekend day-times. Why bother slagging them off, it's like complaining because a cinema doesn't sell DIY gear.... There's 5 times more alternatives that are designed for your needs.
  10. That's frightening.
  11. *enter stage right, pursued by a pair of jeans demonstrating a voracious and insatiable bad attitude* *trips on rug and dives head first through open window; jeans skid to a halt, eyeball other residents of quiet room, then turn on a hem and stomp back out theorugh the door and down the stairs to continue irresistible pursuit of huguenot*
  12. I'd recommend playing with timers - 15 mins per person per game seems usually about right. It stops a game being interminable, and means players can swap partners after half an hour. Then we could maybe have a meet between 8 of us in a quiet pub (Clockhouse?)on a weekday night and have two/three games each between say 8pm and 10pm? We'd have to decide on the dictionary of course.... ;-)
  13. I reckon we're quite short of these; but myself and Bumbalina do need to meet our chums and their kids somewhere at weekends! I make it the following ED Pubs that welcome kids: The Herne, The Vale Outside ED we could consider The Sun & Doves (Camberwell), The Crown & Greyhound.... erm, any more? The ones that don't: EDT & Black Cherry (except mid-week afternoons), The Bishop, The Palmerston, Inside 72, Liquorice, Franklins, CPT, The Drum, Uplands Is that fair? What have I missed? It seems that 'adults only' get a reasonable crack of the whip in ED?
  14. Yup, here's the company website Bumbalina really wanted to keep them, but I think it's going to have to be put on hold in Singpore!
  15. Interesting - it doesn't seem to work that way for me. For me it remains red until I have used it as a link to that thread at any point. e.g if I go to the thread by using 'last post' it'll remain red. However, once I have used it as a 'red' link to the earliest new post, it'll remain blue ad infinitum, or until I access using a different browser. It doesn't operate any differently to a red one. It seems to turn blue as a way of saying 'you have used this way of linking to the thread'...
  16. Definitely, I'm a great fan!
  17. On the subject of Bender in a Bun, surely it wasn't that long ago that Wimpy also advised us to 'Chomp my Chunkynormous'? Also a convincing recommendation. On that basis, perhaps a petition to return this doyen of popular culture and eclectic Britishness back to our craven High Street? I shall contact them directly.
  18. I ask, because having now patented the all new 'Jet Pram' I may have ill considered the state of the market...
  19. Technically a three wheeled pram is by far a better engineering solution than a four wheeled one: in terms of footprint, stability, manoeuverability and avoiding annoying rattles. I struggle to believe that people would prefer to have four wheeled ones? Is this a baby thing, not a pram thing? Or is this because it's only the wealthy and priveleged amongst us that have the wit to recognise their superior features ;-)
  20. I was very tempted to nip round the back of dominos, over the little wall, and take a couple of big bin liners and a litter picking stick to that huge pile of junk that is alongside the path up the station. Unfortunately I only had this blinding bit of inspiration as I returned to work, so I haven't yet had the opportunity to implement it. It's sort of guerilla community contribution, but bloody hell would you become famous quick - even revered around the neighborhood i suspect!
  21. Gosh! I didn't know that. It's not quite as bad as that (but still not good) - I've contacted them and they say it's only a year, and it's down to insurance (they'd have to raise prices for everyone). Boo hiss.
  22. I bought 8 dinner plates in Roullier White the other day. Very happy thanks. Would have been a reet pain in the arse if I'd had to go to the WEnd to get 'em! (Erm, yes, bust my other dinner plates through some ungracious dish washer interaction and a debate with a pepper cellar)
  23. These guys have really hit on a great idea here (and I love it too!). Streetcar have added 45 new cars this week, including Honor Oak and Peckham Rye Complete list as follows: Streetcar Locations If you're not yet a member, try booting out your own car and using these little jobbies. For those boogers only wanting to save the environment if there's a cash incentive, the AA reckon use of Streetcar instead of your own car saves ?3,000 a year. No excuse now. There was an undercover Fifth Gear report on them which makes enlightening viewing! Click Here PS No undeclared interest here, I'm just a fan!
  24. Hi Katie! Karavan remains Karavan, but they're going for a more Silk Road feel with imported chinese items. The old glass and mirrors shop has been let to White Stuff with an opening date in a month or so. They're subletting one of the three units. I've not heard about Jerk Rock, I think they ran out of cash. M&S Simply Foods has no publicly stated desire to come to ED, and hasn't been associated with any of the current units, but is a focus for distrust amongst long term residents associated with arriviste yuppie interlopers (like me! ;-))
  25. Interesting use of the word snob used here... the original derivation is supposed to be a contraction of sine nobilitate. So it was used by the nobility to criticise pretentious or arriviste newcomers who aspired to join their select club. Within this thread it has quite the opposite implication - it's used as an insult directed at those newcomers who are 'lording it' above the established residents with their new fangled ways. Crazy eh?
