*yawn* Best all sit around shitting ourselves and talking about Americans all the time then. You could get together with New Nexus and have a chat? He's got loads of material he can copy and paste from American bulletin boards? Americans are much more interesting on these subjects.

9/11 - Have we learned anything?

I'm not sure you know what the phrase means old chap: Reductio ad absurdum (Latin: "reduction to the absurd") is a form of argument in which a proposition is disproven by following its implications logically to an absurd consequence. Me saying 'conspiracy theorists are absurd' is not reductio ad absurdum. -

Jon Ronson is a celebrity comic writer who generates humour from the absurdities of everyday life. In particular he gets entertainment mileage by pricking the ballooning egos of many a pompous ass. I suspect narcissitic conspiracy theorists would be very high on his list for precisely that reason, and that's the only 'real motivation' he needs. It has added spice from the fact that conspiracy theorists simply cannot see what other people see - how ridiculous they are: http://www.hcs.harvard.edu/~ichthus/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2010/09/mirror.jpg -
Absolutely UDT, and thankfully you're there to set us all straight. Have you thought about running a Premiership team in addition to your hifi purity consultancy? It would be a bit unfair on the others though, so it's good of you to hold yourself back.

Excellent - any more news about America? It's all so interesting, they're just sooooo important. Because you talk so knowledgably about America it makes you really cool too!
-
Aren't Americans cool? Way cooler than anyone else.

What, am I James Barber? I assumed that you weren't so stupid as to ask that question for real. Seems I was wrong. Yes buddug, sure I am, whatever you want.
-
Don't forget to have a sweepstake on how many times the ball goes out of the ground. I'll have 7.
-
You and I, and many people on this forum know that your exchange with James was much more than that, and that you're simply lying because you were unhappy with the contractors and you want to make it James' fault. Shit contractors? Who knew eh? Never heard of that before. And none of it, buddug, is terrorism - and none of it is James Barber's fault. You've jumped the shark.
-
"Not true, the single speed phenomenon these days originated from courier bikers. Extra gears meant extra maintenance costs." That has to be an award winning case of post rationalisation. The best I've seen in years. This is going to be followed by several posts with UDT furiously defending this patently ludicrous statement.

"Jon Corzine finally tells where the MF Global clients money went" New Nexus will copy and paste loads of moronic stuff from US websites that have zero interest or relevance in the UK simply because he thinks Americans are somehow impressive and clever and loads more fun. Like I did when I was 7 and watched the 'Red Hand Gang'.

"Easy target for a growing band of assholes and furios." Yeah, I kind of think you've nailed it there. I mean, let's have a look at some of the things that have even been said on this thread? Buddug has obviously not had the greatest of experience with Southwark contractors, and I can see how infuriating this would be. However, buddug hasn't bothered to tell the truth, and has massively inflated their problem in order to inflame the situation. "I expected more than "just buy the freehold" from a local councillor" That was just bollocks. From other correspondence it's clear that JB has been working with buddug for months trying to resolve this situation. However he has limited power and influence and hasn't been able to resolve to buddug's satisfaction. "he was able to ignore the request for help from someone being terrorised in their home by Southwark housing department " This is absolutely barking on so many levels. To suggest that unresponsive poorly skilled contractors is tantamount to terrorism shows a separation from reality that knows no bounds. The thing is that buddug cannot distinguish between this unfortunate occurence and JB as an individual. Buddug has projected all their frustration completely inappropriately onto JB and now stalks him on the forum haranguing him at any opportunity regardless of the issue. "JB has manipulated figures to suit his own agenda - an agenda which he failed to make explicit when the whole "consultation" process started." This is yet another outrageous accusation. It positions James completely inappropriately as a liar and a fraud, whilst BrandNewGuy is trying to pass himself off as a reasonable commentator. James does not stand to benefit financially or otherwise from a CPZ, he is likely to create for himself a difficult task at the elections by supporting a minority view. It's pretty safe to say that James has no fucking agenda at all other than supporting the not unreasonable requests of disadvantaged residents. So this accusation isn't funny or clever. It actually is an example (as is buddug) of the venal lengtths that people are willing to go to, to abuse a reasonable and hardworking public representative just because they don't share his views. So 'assholes or furios'? Yes, and bullshitters to boot.

Been burgled and annoyed at short sentence given to offender?
Huguenot replied to emc's topic in The Lounge
Ha ha. I think the only person who could start with 'too short a sentence' for burglary would be someone who's never been in prison. Mind you, if we decided that the appropriate sentence for burglary was breaking their legs and stabbing them in the throat, imagine the things we could do to people who committed worse crimes? -

It's more likely to be a reflection of the builder's current workload. If they've already got jobs on they'll have to subcontract which creates a great deal of hassle. The bid is high as a reflection of the fact that there's two sets of margins to pay, and the builder doesn't need the business. For the builder it's a no lose gamble - if they sucker you then they're laughing, if they don't get it they don't care. I'm guessing you're extending the side return out? 30k to 40k sounds the right area.

Further afield and wet - how about a boat trip down the Mekong from Thailand to Saigon, or from Chongqing (Chungking) to the Three Gorges Dam? TBH any rail trip in China will blow your bloody socks off. Make sure you include PingYao.

That even after months of abuse he still can't spell then name of his nemesis :) Or that even though I've explained I live 8,500 miles away my disaffection for food Nazis is emblematic for the opressed citizens of East Dulwich ;-) Or that my rage for a better society and fierce love for my neighbour has triumphed over all. *points to horizon, gets coat and tiptoes through pantry door*

Apart from those people wishing to use people's residential streets as their own carpark for convenience purposes, there are long term issues that should be considered. Anything that reduces or restricts the use of cars in the urban environment should be heavily biased in favour of implementation. The geopolitical, environmental, social and health impact of private cars has been relentlessly negative: breaking up our societies into quivering heaps of dislocated individuals choking on particulates whingeing about gangs and islamic fundamentalism. As with many of the most disruptive and short-sighted strategies of our society, the campaign for car freedom is lead by right wing ageing males, willing to sacrifice others at the altar of their own self-indulgence simply because they'll never have to pay the price. Were I to make it to that community meeting, I'd be having a close look at some of the 'protestors' and asking whether I honestly could share their motivations. -
ibilly99 - a man of your evident 'street smarts' clearly gets one out on ambushing the posh kids and getting mud on their blazer. Let's be honest though, 'me 4x4's broken' has as much credibility as 'the dog ate my homework'. I'd be happy to see the shop owner get fined simply because I don't like loud mouthed prats when they get called on their bullshit jumping up in front of teacher screaming 'prove it, prove it' when what they really need is their head flushed down a toilet and then to sit in a corner crying snot like the pathetic little kid they are.

Wearing Poppies - A serious question
Huguenot replied to BB100's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Oh come on Lynne - what's your beef? Are you going to go round there and tell them what's what? Tell them that they have no right to set school rules, that you know better, that kids can do what they want, that if you were in charge it would be a better school? What's next? You going to set the law on them? Sue them? Push burgers through the fence?
