  1. fazer71: "The problems then would be that the housing officers would al leave the council as they wouldn't be getting the kick backs form the incompetent criminal contractors." This is a massive accusation, it's libellous, and you should be aware that current legislation would oblige your ISP to reveal your identity and location if the victims chose to pursue you for justice.

I'm guessing it's a pretty straightforward crime, and open to DNA testing. The only reason why someone would spend all day every day sat in a van there would be burglary surely?

    Sound like they need help.
  4. "I still don't understand why the consultation against in Bermondsey was good enough to stop CPZ, but here it is not." Where did you get that from? No decision is made on a CPZ in ED. A consultation has been entered into, and the next step is a meeting scheduled for later this month when undoubtedly many views and arguments will be taken into account. It's important that people don't inflame sentiment by making untrue claims.
  5. Gsirett, you must have missed someing somewhere? Firstly, It is apparent that within the consultation and the petitions, the debate has actually moved on from simple counts to the relative weights of the interested parties. With a 1 hour arrangement traders are negligibly affected, commuters are the exploiters, and Herne Hill shows us the 'edge' residents are unlikely to be affected to the degree they claim. Their views should be weighted accordingly. Secondly, as the financial crisis has taught us, and however unreasonable it may seem, the general public tend to run with things that seem to give them immediate gratification rather than their long term benefit. Whether it's crazy borrowing beyond their means, or rejecting vehicle regulations, the public 'feeling' sometimes need to be tempered with long term planning and insight. This should also be weighted accordingly.
  6. The 1 hour proposal has been discussed on this site for months. Is it really so unreasonable that we keep CPZ discussions to the dedicated CPZ thread, rather than drowning out people like Carrie who have other issues to discuss with the councillor? This is why there is a seperate thread, to allow for all the needs of the community. People insisting on trying to dominate every thread with repetitive CPZ claims at the expense of other people are acting incredibly selfishly.
  7. fazer71, I'm glad to say that you're in a very small minority if you believe that we should demolish our cultural heritage and build on green land. You've also been pretty poorly informed if you think failing to do this is what caused the housing crisis.

  10. I agree that commuters hold a stake in the outcome of the CPZ debate, and their opinion should be weighted accordingly. The only thing I know about Mr. Barber is that he's a hardworking chap who doesn't deserve to be libelled, abused or intimidated simply because he hasn't made up his mind on the CPZ - and wants to make sure he also takes into account the views of those who have requested one. Those who aren't supporting a CPZ should graciously accept that not everyone shares their views, and should also recognise that a '1 hour' solution is unlikely to impact anyone but commuters - with local traders and shoppers negligibly affected by the scheme. The only people entitled to moan about the cost of the scheme or the impact on their own convenience are the ones inside the zone. The only thing that people outside the zone can complain about is the 'edge' effect - and the experience from Herne Hill is that this has been vastly exaggerated on this forum. Your own proclamations, Giles, about conspiracies and vendetta are wholly irrelevant.
  11. That sounds like a great trip - very hot and dusty but some amazing scenery. I've always had a thing for northern Turkey along the Black Sea coast - but never actually made it there.
  12. These guys were involved in an armed campaign that involved the mass slaughter of innocent citizens in the name of crimes committed centuries earlier and persistent social injustices. Whatever they may have claimed, I doubt that they were just having a moan over not being able to wear jeans.
  13. I understand a few of them come from Scutari Road ;-)
  14. Moggway? Whatever happens don't get water on them.
  15. It's a terrific set of walks, but I guess the religious connotations can be very offputting. It would prevent someone like me from doing it. Perhaps some of the walking groups might be a good place to search for chums?
  16. There is a dedicated thread for CPZ issues, and the conversation should be restricted to there in order to allow residents an opportunity to discuss other issues with James. Please respect that.
  17. "Longer haul - I've still to achieve my ambition to walk in the Himalyan foothills." Oh, and heavens you should do it! I've never been anywhere that was so spectacular that I forgot to breathe, but watching the sunrise in the Himalaya, following the deep red roll down the mountainside towards you whilst the crystal peaks start to glitter painfully in the full brilliance of the day.... well, you need a resuscitator on hand. A photo simply cannot grasp the scale of the experience.. http://www.csmonitor.com/var/ezflow_site/storage/images/media/images/2010/0205/020510-himalayan-glaciers/7350264-1-eng-US/020510-Himalayan-glaciers_full_600.jpg
  18. There's several silly things being said on this thread. Firstly is the claim that James Barber is not listening to the community. The community itself does not have one voice. There are people within the community both for and against the CPZ. The second is 'shock' that consultation is not a vote. If you are 'shocked' by this there is no helping you. Asking someone's opinion is clearly not the same as asking them to make the decision. Thirdly is the aggression and baseless, nasty accusations being laid out on this forum by people who live nowhere near the zone. These are clearly made in the contributor's own (commuter) interest, and the use of verbal abuse in this scenario means you've betrayed the whole community that you profess to be defending. It's simply selfish bullying.
  19. What like secondary picketing? That wasn't a right so much as a license for organised piracy. What about guaranteed 28 days holiday, what about the Working Time regulations 1998, what about the right to flexible working under the Employment Rights Act 1996? All those and the minimum wage. The problem with your gripes is that they have a completely warped sense of perspective. Workers rights now blow out of the water those of 50 years ago. My comments are a response to UDT's ridiculous assertion that modern workers are slaves who have less rights now than they did in the past. It's simply not true. I don't believe that people should get away with spouting rubbish like that. It should be exposed for the nonsense it is.

  22. Did he..... swear? *snickers* Marks and Spencer used to do a really good joke book, and they didn't use any swear words, or say anything bad about anyone. Nice line in jumpers too.
  23. Yeah right, and it wasn't as if they brought in the minimum wage - the single biggest contribution to workers rights since the end of indentured labour? Or does that not really count? *shakes head*
  24. Well the courts found that 45,700 out of 50,900 (89.7%) of cases were not justified. So unless you believe the courts have a secret agenda to persecute victims of bad workplace practices, that's a pretty good independent view on how prevalent frivolous cases are. I came across one of my employees who took me to an employment tribunal a decade ago (he lost). It was through a friend who was extremely stressed at being taken to court by the same guy. It transpired that this was his fourth attempt in as many years all aginst different employers, so he could have accounted for that 89% figure all on his own - the tosser.
