  1. I am basing it on the coverage in the Times which covered it, various tv docu-dramas , and the fact that she was a driven woman, which in my experience means that you cannot give your children as much as other mothers might. However it is true that there are a whole set of upper middle class/ upper class people who have had nannies who raised children, and they were " brought down " to see their parents just before they went to bed. Maybe that is fine and I am wrong to say she " sacrificed" her role. Its just my personal opinion. I cannot imagine how it must be to have been brought up like this, anyone out there in East Dulwich brought up like this?
  2. oops ;) yes, Theresa. I think Thatcher was a pioneer in that she showed a woman could be PM. SHe showed it was possible. She did sacrifice her role as a mother. Like many woman of that age, they did not make things any easier for women that followed them. They had the attitude " I have sacrificed a lot to get here, so must you". I think maybe things are better now, but there is the fear of "tokenism" . I speak as someone offered a job by the ex GLC as a token woman in the early 80's. It is much more acceptable for women - and men-to work parttime/ flexi, than it was 25 years ago.
  3. SHe was a pioneer, but she appears to have had to sacrifice her role as a mother in order to develop her career. She had balls. Many women that have historically done well such as Barbara Castle and Teresa May had/have no children. I ask myself- would I want to be an MP? no . Would I support any women friends that did? yes absolutely- but you def need a loyal partner who is prepared to support you and be the main carer for children.
  4. Thats absolutely fine!! unless anyone wants it - its a gonna!
  5. I used to put the youngest down in the cot first, when they had finished crying I would put the other one in. WHile the crying was going on we had stories in my bed ( not perfect I know :( )
  6. Please can anyone tell me what this ( see attached)is called, what it is for and does it have any value? If does does have any value how much? -roughly? Many thanks
  7. !! really- am I now meant to do this? will we be fined or do I hold off a week? I am confused. Anyone out there knows the answer? I really dont want to go to another library today unless it is to avoid a fine. thansk

  13. I look forward to your biography KK. :)
  14. A great family meal is smoked mackeral risotto. Make usual risotto and at the end flake in a packet of smoked mackeral- the ones that are less than ?2 a pack- vacuum packed and a few handfuls of frozen veg. This costs less than ?5 for a family of 4 inc 2 teenagers. You can double it up and freeze it too.
  15. you could try wwww.simply childcare, its much cheaper than 3 weeks wages .
  16. NEVER go into a cafe and buy a drink or food. Carry tap water around in a plastic bottle. Have friends to your house for coffee or meet at theirs. Never buy any magazines or papers. You might find this makes a difference. ( I don't recommend it for more than 3 months).
  17. i have a kenwood multi pro which i use for pastry, cakes, biscuits, blitzing, soup making, grating, breadcrumb making, soup and smoottie blending. It came with a huge amount of attachments which probably do other stuff but I have never used them. So it has a big blade at the bottom for processing , but it coems with a " liquideiser" i use for blending soups etc, and a smaller thing, I think called a coffee grinder, which I use for coffee, herbs etc. I am happy with it. I did inherit a kenwood chef but the bowl size on that means it really only works for medium/ large quantities, and its so heavy to move around hte kitchen, but I do use it for making big quantites, which the kenwood multi pro can't manage- eg Christmas cake.
  18. buy a black and a white T shirt. get your scissors out- and cut/ sew / wonderweb as necessary.
  19. we thought English HEritage was better for younger children- less precious buildings- more old castles, but we used to join something differnt every year, royal palaces is very good- even better if swap cards with a friend- which I am sure is illegal- same for tate etc.
  20. if you have one son then a "golf" sized car is good- unless you will need to put a bicycle in the boot. Its tricky parking an estate car in London, and they use more fuel. A polo is really handy for driving on London, but not sure if it big enough depending if you need to put a travel cot, buggy and high chair in the boot , as well as your clothes.
  21. i think state schools have 13 weeks holidays, private about 17 weeks.you can add a few teacher training days to the state schools
  22. Surely you want a golf then? but depends on your budget!
  23. There was a Kats whiskers in Streatham a long time ago.
