  1. i would also think closely about location and the ease of "play dates" collection/ taxiing. How easy would it be to take darling children to someones party in a palace in regents park etc? I think local is an important criterea .
  2. approach the estate agent that is selling your flat- they should work extra hard for you- as they have so much more to loose. Of course vendors are holding out for as much as poss. Thats property ownership! If you are quite sure about what you want and have a few roads in mind then fly post the houses on that road and agree to buy at a price agreed by an independent chartered surveyor. Bribe the estate agents a personal ? bonus if they help you acquire a house.
  3. just take photos and share with neighbour now- ie before. then you have a record for later.
  4. I second turtle mats they wash really well.
  5. Rugs are the answer. Patterned ones- that will take the vanish. There is one ikea rug which i buy bought for ?40 every 4 years- it took a lot of dirt. Carpets are better thatn bare floor boards if they fall over. Beige carpets are the best colour. But- be very strict about where you allow food and pens. ( we have the same beige carpet after 12 years- have it cleaned every few years- but the rug in the middle takes a LOT of wear.)
  6. Learn to drive NOW. seriously. Growing up outside London with out being able to drive will be very hard- all that ferrying children to and fro- parties/ football/ school. If you only have one child ,learn while you can.
  7. PLease call the police. There may be witnesses happy to testify. It may be a child next.

  9. I am basing it on the coverage in the Times which covered it, various tv docu-dramas , and the fact that she was a driven woman, which in my experience means that you cannot give your children as much as other mothers might. However it is true that there are a whole set of upper middle class/ upper class people who have had nannies who raised children, and they were " brought down " to see their parents just before they went to bed. Maybe that is fine and I am wrong to say she " sacrificed" her role. Its just my personal opinion. I cannot imagine how it must be to have been brought up like this, anyone out there in East Dulwich brought up like this?
  10. oops ;) yes, Theresa. I think Thatcher was a pioneer in that she showed a woman could be PM. SHe showed it was possible. She did sacrifice her role as a mother. Like many woman of that age, they did not make things any easier for women that followed them. They had the attitude " I have sacrificed a lot to get here, so must you". I think maybe things are better now, but there is the fear of "tokenism" . I speak as someone offered a job by the ex GLC as a token woman in the early 80's. It is much more acceptable for women - and men-to work parttime/ flexi, than it was 25 years ago.
  11. SHe was a pioneer, but she appears to have had to sacrifice her role as a mother in order to develop her career. She had balls. Many women that have historically done well such as Barbara Castle and Teresa May had/have no children. I ask myself- would I want to be an MP? no . Would I support any women friends that did? yes absolutely- but you def need a loyal partner who is prepared to support you and be the main carer for children.
  12. Thats absolutely fine!! unless anyone wants it - its a gonna!
  13. I used to put the youngest down in the cot first, when they had finished crying I would put the other one in. WHile the crying was going on we had stories in my bed ( not perfect I know :( )

  22. A great family meal is smoked mackeral risotto. Make usual risotto and at the end flake in a packet of smoked mackeral- the ones that are less than ?2 a pack- vacuum packed and a few handfuls of frozen veg. This costs less than ?5 for a family of 4 inc 2 teenagers. You can double it up and freeze it too.
