  5. I used to look forward to visiting my HVs as I had sleep problems with my first (he's now 20). I used to try putting their advice into practice (have the sleep diaries somewhere to prove it)! Got to remember that there was no internet links, mobiles, etc. and HVs (and Mums and Dads) were the only source of advice. With my second baby I did things slightly different but was lucky that she slept through the night from 6 months and also my third but they still had a dummy and teddy to go to sleep with which really helped settle them. I bottlefed all three and can remember sitting up with son with the bottle hanging out of his mouth in a perfect sleep and then putting him down and that was it, back to square one! Other than that my health visitors were great in giving me good advice about everything (not sure about the chips) and I think it's a good thing that they've made a comeback.
  6. lightweight - nobody seems to have answered your concerns about accepting a place at the Judith Kerr School, especially now they are suddenly going to be located somewhere in Herne Hill? Surely they can give a rough location for would-be parents? Thought it was more East Dulwich/Peckham Rye way? A bit tight if you don't want to compromise other choices of schools. James Barber might be the person to ask.
  7. Thanks - I love the garden birds and have just completed your survey.
  8. I don't think they have a catchment area. If you go on their website they have to fulfil 3 criteria (like most schools) and then the 4th criteria is for kids within the safest walking distance. Saying that, I've had three at The Charter and some of their friends have lived further past The Carnegie Library but not as far as Loughborough Junction. Then again, I see lots of the pupils waiting for the P4 bus, which goes towards and past the junction to Brixton and often think they could walk it in half the time so I might be wrong.

  14. Good idea about doing it at home if you or friends have the room! But don't provide any kind of alcohol as this is still against the law at just turned 16. A licensed venue would say no to an under 18s do as it's more than their licence is worth. Southwark and Lambeth enforcement officers are very active late at night for all kinds of events and turn up just when you least expect it and they have the power to take venue holders to court etc.

  24. I was looking forward to leaving school in the summer of 79, just turned 16. Took my O Levels and CSEs and then went straight out to work (wished I'd gone on to college but I can't change time). I do remember the electricity black-outs and rubbish piling up and being very cold during the winter. I also remember the coal man and the oil man coming round. The coal man used to go up and down our street yelling "who want's coal?" There was always a strike going on in the late 70s but I suppose it must have been harder for my Mum and Dad coping with all this than me!
