A January poll suggests a far lower concern over immigration than has been suggested. https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2017/jan/21/immigration-lowest-priority-young-people-brexit-poll The Guardian saw fit to highlight the young people / old people divide, but admits "Reducing immigration scored far higher among the over-55 age group (7.63) though even among these voters it was still not seen as important as 12 other issues." Which included protecting human rights, preventing hate crime, ensuring public services are well funded, reducing poverty... I certainly wouldn't want to paint a rosy post-referendum picture of the problems we face and the backtracking on the Dubs Scheme is shameful, but the 'hateful little grey island' meme is getting a little tiresome.

The latest version of the New Southwark Plan talks about rebuilding/reopening Camberwell station on the railway line, but I think last time this was mooted, Network Rail was lukewarm about the idea, to say the least. http://www.disused-stations.org.uk/c/camberwell_new_road/

Yeah, and the new pub signs are up ? advertising 12 'boutique' rooms. I believe 'boutique' in this context does not refer to a 60s footballer's trendy frock shop, but a tiny room that costs a fortune. There's absolutely no prospect of any live music that is either loud or late.

The FAO produce a Food Price Index each month and the latest one indicates steady increases in world food prices: "The FAO Food Price at near two-year high in January The FAO Food Price Index* (FFPI) averaged 173.8 points in January 2017, up 3.7 points (2.1 percent) from the revised December value. At this level, the FFPI is at its highest value since February 2015 and as much as 24.5 points (16.4 percent) above its level in the corresponding period last year. The strong rebound in the January value of the FFPI was driven by a surge in international sugar quotations and sharp increases in export prices of cereals as well as vegetable oils. Meat and dairy markets remained more stable." http://www.fao.org/worldfoodsituation/foodpricesindex/en/

Dulwich MP Helen Hayes votes against the Brexit Bill

So that would mean someone > saying something they don't actually believe, just > to be approved of by their friends? Not necessarily. I saw posts on Facebook for instance with, "Standing with native Americans protesting the Dakota pipeline." It's a toss-up whether that counts as someone's belief, but when it's someone from London just reposting stuff to their friends and doing nothing else about it*, that's virtue signalling. If I said, "I believe in helping people in trouble" and didn't actually ever do so, then what's the status of my 'belief'? * I did ask one particular person about what they'd done and they hadn't even gone as far as signing a petition. -

No, I said it is the specific instance of stating a position in order to be seen as 'right' within one's circle of friends. It happens all the time in social media. I didn't say it happened in this thread, but it remains a useful phrase for a specific phenomenon. -

If that's the > case, it's something we should all be doing. Not really, it means showing your circle of friends that you're a good person. It has no effect in the real world and thus is self-indulgent. Agreed, though, that the term can be overused and wrongly used where it isn't deserved. But sometimes it is. -

Albright also said last year that there's a 'special place in hell' for women who didn't support Hillary Clinton. The intolerance of the 'tolerant'. -
Well, that was a description used by Ptolemy, but there's no evidence that they were the names used for either Ireland or GB at the time. FWIW Wikipedia goes with the Brittany/Little Britain connection.

I for one think it's worth pointing out their ignorance :-)

It should be pointed out that 'Great Britain' is derived from the post-Norman 'Grande Bretagne', to distinguish the large island of Britain from 'Bretagne', which referred to modern-day Brittany. So it's not a claim about how marvellous we are.

"The government is considering taking direct control of the rail franchise that includes Southern rail, it has been claimed. Rail Business Intelligence magazine said the Department for Transport (DfT) was preparing a number of options, ranging from splitting off Southern from Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR), to a complete ?managed exit? to take direct control of the entire franchise until a new contract could be let." https://www.theguardian.com/business/2017/jan/25/government-reported-to-be-planning-to-nationalise-southern-rail-franchise?CMP=twt_gu -
Although to be fair to Millwall, they did put up an alternative plan which included a housing element.

Just went for a walk along the River Pool, amac, and you'll be pleased to know I heard a few greenfinches :-) No kingfishers or water rails, but lots of moorhens and a little flock of fieldfares in the trees, plus starling, house sparrow, dunnock, robin, wren, blackbird, song thrush, blue tit, great tit, coal tit, goldfinch, chaffinch, carrion crow, magpie, jackdaw, wood pigeon, feral pigeon, herring gull, mallard, pied wagtail and grey wagtail. Lovely place!

The simple fact is, most people I see hanging around the doors have no mobility issues. They're lazy and/or daft.
