  1. The brave new world may be a little further away: California regulators ordered Uber to remove its self-driving vehicles from the road on the same day that the company?s vehicles were caught running red lights ? violations the company immediately blamed on ?human error?. ?It is essential that Uber takes appropriate measures to ensure safety of the public,? the California department of motor vehicles (DMV) wrote to Uber on Wednesday after it defied government officials and began piloting the cars in San Francisco without permits. ?If Uber does not confirm immediately that it will stop its launch and seek a testing permit, DMV will initiate legal action.? https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/dec/14/uber-self-driving-cars-run-red-lights-san-francisco
  2. DHFC won the replay tonight at Royston 1-0 with a late goal. Facing Whitehawk away in the Second Round on January 14th.
  3. Goldfinches these days are much more common in London than they used to be and will flock in winter. Chaffinches are relatively rare around here, though ? there's a pair or two in and around Dog Kennel Hill Wood and almost certainly a number in Dulwich and Sydenham Woods.
  4. Meadow Residential or one of their associated companies has lodged a planning appeal, ref. W/16/3164823, dated Wed 07 Dec, relating to the main planning application: http://planbuild.southwark.gov.uk:8190/online-applications/appealDetails.do?activeTab=dates&keyVal=_STHWR_DCAPPEAL_1659 It?s a 'Planning Non-determination Appeal' and the associated procedure is 'Public Inquiry'. An applicant has the right to appeal to the Planning Inspectorate if they believe that the council has taken too long in deliberating/discussing an application. The 'appropriate time limit' is regarded as 8 weeks for minor applications, 13 weeks for major applications or 16 weeks in the case of applications requiring environmental assessment. This looks like an attempt to put pressure on the council, as a public enquiry could prove quite costly... The appeal has been lodged but not yet validated and there are as yet no associated documents.
  5. Ditto - and I have an online fake birthday for eventualities such as this.
  6. The interviewee on Radio 4 who, not content with constant rising inflection? and vocal fry, pronounced 'coincidentally' as if the first syllable were 'coin'. Coin-cidentally. And she said it twice.
  7. The lovely proprietor in Greetings, the card shop. Always friendly, cheerful and helpful.
  8. Yes, it's not so much a victory as the avoidance of a disaster ? which would have been the removal of protections on the ground before the proposed development was given the green light. Then the developers could have simply chucked the club off the site and applied for planning permission for just its development rather than Green Dale as well, chucking in a bit more 'affordable housing' than planned in order to meet their Section 106 obligations.
  9. New compensation scheme announced for Southern Rail customers ? in addition to Delay Repay: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/compensation-payment-of-1-months-travel-for-southern-passengers Tens of thousands of Southern rail passengers are to be repaid the equivalent of a month?s travel for the extraordinary disruption they have suffered, the government announced today (2 December 2016). More than 84,000 passengers will be compensated to recognise the particular hardship of those who have suffered long delays, cancellations and disruption in recent months. This disruption is due to a number of causes including Network Rail track failures, engineering works, unacceptably poor performance by the operator and the actions of the RMT union. Season ticket holders will be able to claim a refund for the equivalent of a month?s (4 weeks) travel. That means an annual season ticket holder will be able to claim a refund against their 2016 ticket, which can be paid directly into their bank account. This is a one off compensation payment and is in addition to the improved Delay Repay 15 compensation scheme, which will begin operation on Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) services from December 11, ministers announced today.... ... Customers claiming against quarterly, monthly or weekly tickets must have bought travel for at least 12 weeks between 24 April 2016 and 31 December 2016 to be eligible. GTR will also be able to consider proof of purchase from people claiming this compensation who are not registered with the company...
  10. We do have jetpacks but as you say, it's the 'viable mass rollout' that's the problem. Every case study I've seen suggests there's a huge amount of infrastructure requiremdin addition to what the cars themselves carry ? 'smart' traffic signals, junction sensors, relay systems in GPS and mobile signal 'blackspots' and more. And if your car itself costs more than a conventional one, people won't buy it ? unless there's a significant system of subsidies.
  11. But rendelharris, your argument could just as well have applied to jetpacks or colonies on Mars... or anywhere else in the galaxy. And nowhere have you mentioned cost. Our roads, canals and railways ? which were nearly all built by speculation via public subscription - a model for which profit is the driver. Interestingly, many if not most schemes went bust but we still ended up with the infrastructure... as we did most recently with the Channel Tunnel. With driverless cars, is it a breakthrough technology in economic terms? I'd suggest not, so no-one's going to want to pony up for it.
  12. Won't happen ? far too expensive to put all the infrastructure in place. Who is going to pay? Everyone whizzing around in driverless cars is no less a fantasy than jetpacks and holidays in space.

It's very much living - the initial crowdfunding drive a year ago was successful and the project is currently in a full feasability study phase. I was at a Spacehive meeting last week ? they're the organisation 'partnering' with Southwark to help crowdfund local community projects.
  14. Interestingly, even a Labour-commissioned report suggests that lack of supply is really not the story: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/business/news/lack-of-new-house-building-not-to-blame-for-soaring-house-prices-a7419361.html
  15. 1-0 away win today at Winchester in the FA Trophy 3rd Qualifying Round. Now in the 1st Round 'proper' on Dec 10th.
  16. So, just to confirm, that means VLA (Variation: legal agreement) and VNMC (Variation: non-material changes) are 'not agreed'. Does that constitute a rejection of the application?

More generally, not all stereotypes are harmful.
  19. Yes. I was speaking with Chris Taylor from the club this afternoon and he confirmed that the club are responsible for all directly football-related income and outgoings, but not the bar or rental income.
  20. If you'd paid attention to what the weapons inspectors were saying (and it was reported extensively in the press), you'd have known that the dossier was a work of fiction before the war started.
  21. The murky ownership/control situation might be illuminated by these details (below) that were posted to the DHFC fan forum. I can't vouch for their accuracy, but they haven't been challenged. It confirms that Hadley Property Group are off the scene completely (thus rendering null and void the already virtually meaningless Memorandum of Understanding about building a stadium and handing the club over to fan ownership). More intetestingly, the Club does not benefit financially either from bar takings or other rents (ie the car wash). In my mind, this helps the controlling interests paint a grimmer view of DHFC's finances in order to put themselves up as saviours and to suggest that the major development is the only option for the survival of the club. Internet of Things. This is no less a faith-based prediction than those that suggest that Jesus Christ will return in glory or that we'll all have jetpacks by 2000. I'm not buying that anyone's going to be able to afford all this. It's a hell of a lot more than a camera, some sensors and GPS.
  23. It could be disabled parking only.
  24. As with electric cars, the great unanswered question asbout driverless cars is who's going to pay? All that infallible infrastructure, all those new vehicles. You're looking at tens if not hundreds of billions. Will only driverless vehicles be permitted - in one big switchover? The clever optimisiation of vehicle movements will be impossible if there are pesky humans also on the road, making their own decisions. And the great philosophical conundrum is that your car might be programmed to kill you. Imagine a scenario where you're driving at speed and a tree crashes into the road just ahead of you. The only way to avoid it is to plough into a bus queue by the side of the road. Will the car 'kill' you or the half a dozen people in the queue? I can see hackers fiddling with the car to allow all kinds of different scenarios.
  25. :-) You are correct. Pure coincidence.
