Leaving NO BREAD for the everyday shoppers
BrandNewGuy replied to Marcia123's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Small retailers will often buy retail and sell retail. If you buy an Easter egg or a 'tin' of Quality Street from a small retailer, the chances are they've bought it from a supermarket that has discounted it to less than the retailer would pay at the wholesaler. Blame predatory pricing and preferential pricing rather than the small retailer. -
" India's small businesses facing 'apocalypse' amid biggest financial experiment in history Demonetisation revolution hits firms and workers as cash runs out, but now they are braced for the next stage ? making all salary payments digital" https://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/dec/21/indian-businesses-demonetisation-apocalypse-biggest-financial-experiment-in-history

Going cashless means you can't stash your money under the mattress. In a time of negative real interest rates, putting some of your savings into physical cash is not necessarily a crazy thing to do. If all your money is in the digital realm it is all traceable, taxable and, in the event of another financial meltdown, bail-in-able. I'm not suggesting that's the masterplan, but it's intriguing how many governments around the world have started a 'war' on cash.

V1 & V2 Bombs dropped on Lordship Lane.
BrandNewGuy replied to computedshorty's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
The excellent blog A London Inheritance today features pages from a postwar booklet called ?Hitler Passed This Way?, showing before-and-after photos of some of the damage caused by the bombing of London. http://alondoninheritance.com/thebombedcity/hitler_passed_this_way/ It includes this page showing the devastating effect of the V1 rocket which landed on the Co-op on the corner of Lordship Lane and Northcross Road on August 5th 1944, killing 23 people. A grim but fascinating pair of images. http://alondoninheritance.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/Hitler-Passed-This-Way-25.jpg -

Planning application submitted for new DHFC stadium
BrandNewGuy replied to BrandNewGuy's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Interestingly, despite the developers' alleged close relations with the club, the Dulwich Hamlet Supporters Trust and the "Support Our Stadium" campaign (dormant for the last six months), all of the latter appear to be in the dark about this latest development. If they're not, I'm sure they'll be happy to come on here and tell us what's going on. -
The brave new world may be a little further away: California regulators ordered Uber to remove its self-driving vehicles from the road on the same day that the company?s vehicles were caught running red lights ? violations the company immediately blamed on ?human error?. ?It is essential that Uber takes appropriate measures to ensure safety of the public,? the California department of motor vehicles (DMV) wrote to Uber on Wednesday after it defied government officials and began piloting the cars in San Francisco without permits. ?If Uber does not confirm immediately that it will stop its launch and seek a testing permit, DMV will initiate legal action.? https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2016/dec/14/uber-self-driving-cars-run-red-lights-san-francisco

Dulwich Hamlet v Royston
BrandNewGuy replied to intexasatthe moment's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
DHFC won the replay tonight at Royston 1-0 with a late goal. Facing Whitehawk away in the Second Round on January 14th. -
Goldfinches these days are much more common in London than they used to be and will flock in winter. Chaffinches are relatively rare around here, though ? there's a pair or two in and around Dog Kennel Hill Wood and almost certainly a number in Dulwich and Sydenham Woods.

Planning application submitted for new DHFC stadium

Meadow Residential or one of their associated companies has lodged a planning appeal, ref. W/16/3164823, dated Wed 07 Dec, relating to the main planning application: http://planbuild.southwark.gov.uk:8190/online-applications/appealDetails.do?activeTab=dates&keyVal=_STHWR_DCAPPEAL_1659 It?s a 'Planning Non-determination Appeal' and the associated procedure is 'Public Inquiry'. An applicant has the right to appeal to the Planning Inspectorate if they believe that the council has taken too long in deliberating/discussing an application. The 'appropriate time limit' is regarded as 8 weeks for minor applications, 13 weeks for major applications or 16 weeks in the case of applications requiring environmental assessment. This looks like an attempt to put pressure on the council, as a public enquiry could prove quite costly... The appeal has been lodged but not yet validated and there are as yet no associated documents. -

Tiny Little Things That Cause You Irrational Rage

The interviewee on Radio 4 who, not content with constant rising inflection? and vocal fry, pronounced 'coincidentally' as if the first syllable were 'coin'. Coin-cidentally. And she said it twice. -
The lovely proprietor in Greetings, the card shop. Always friendly, cheerful and helpful.

former East Dulwich councillor - how can I help?
BrandNewGuy replied to James Barber's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Yes, it's not so much a victory as the avoidance of a disaster ? which would have been the removal of protections on the ground before the proposed development was given the green light. Then the developers could have simply chucked the club off the site and applied for planning permission for just its development rather than Green Dale as well, chucking in a bit more 'affordable housing' than planned in order to meet their Section 106 obligations. -
Trains cancellations - latest

New compensation scheme announced for Southern Rail customers ? in addition to Delay Repay: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/compensation-payment-of-1-months-travel-for-southern-passengers Tens of thousands of Southern rail passengers are to be repaid the equivalent of a month?s travel for the extraordinary disruption they have suffered, the government announced today (2 December 2016). More than 84,000 passengers will be compensated to recognise the particular hardship of those who have suffered long delays, cancellations and disruption in recent months. This disruption is due to a number of causes including Network Rail track failures, engineering works, unacceptably poor performance by the operator and the actions of the RMT union. Season ticket holders will be able to claim a refund for the equivalent of a month?s (4 weeks) travel. That means an annual season ticket holder will be able to claim a refund against their 2016 ticket, which can be paid directly into their bank account. This is a one off compensation payment and is in addition to the improved Delay Repay 15 compensation scheme, which will begin operation on Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) services from December 11, ministers announced today.... ... Customers claiming against quarterly, monthly or weekly tickets must have bought travel for at least 12 weeks between 24 April 2016 and 31 December 2016 to be eligible. GTR will also be able to consider proof of purchase from people claiming this compensation who are not registered with the company... -
We do have jetpacks but as you say, it's the 'viable mass rollout' that's the problem. Every case study I've seen suggests there's a huge amount of infrastructure requiremdin addition to what the cars themselves carry ? 'smart' traffic signals, junction sensors, relay systems in GPS and mobile signal 'blackspots' and more. And if your car itself costs more than a conventional one, people won't buy it ? unless there's a significant system of subsidies.
-
But rendelharris, your argument could just as well have applied to jetpacks or colonies on Mars... or anywhere else in the galaxy. And nowhere have you mentioned cost. Our roads, canals and railways ? which were nearly all built by speculation via public subscription - a model for which profit is the driver. Interestingly, many if not most schemes went bust but we still ended up with the infrastructure... as we did most recently with the Channel Tunnel. With driverless cars, is it a breakthrough technology in economic terms? I'd suggest not, so no-one's going to want to pony up for it.
-
Won't happen ? far too expensive to put all the infrastructure in place. Who is going to pay? Everyone whizzing around in driverless cars is no less a fantasy than jetpacks and holidays in space.

Quietway junction - crowd funding (Dulwich Village)

edhistory Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > > As an after thought what has happened to the > mass crowd funding for the Peckham High Line. > Seems to have died a death ofter the money was > raised. > > Has it died? It's very much living - the initial crowdfunding drive a year ago was successful and the project is currently in a full feasability study phase. I was at a Spacehive meeting last week ? they're the organisation 'partnering' with Southwark to help crowdfund local community projects. -
Interestingly, even a Labour-commissioned report suggests that lack of supply is really not the story: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/business/news/lack-of-new-house-building-not-to-blame-for-soaring-house-prices-a7419361.html

So, just to confirm, that means VLA (Variation: legal agreement) and VNMC (Variation: non-material changes) are 'not agreed'. Does that constitute a rejection of the application? -

Yes. I was speaking with Chris Taylor from the club this afternoon and he confirmed that the club are responsible for all directly football-related income and outgoings, but not the bar or rental income.
