Agreed. The highly hopped and strong American IPAs need both some chilling and carbonation to cut through the inevitable heaviness of an ale that's 7%, say. I've tasted cask ales that attempt these strengths and characters - and they're way too sweet/full, despite the hoppiness.

Love the Royal Oak. They have great home-cooked food too. Fond memories of a very long office Xmas lunch there and an evening involving the landlady of another SE1 boozer joining the landlord on a table, belting out "Suspicious Minds"...

Only five minutes from work and always a friendly welcome. It's fair to say they always warn people if the beer is 'pricey'. And, as been pointed out, there's always a decent ale on for under four quid.

Largely agree with Blah Blah, but disagree about Farage. He's been mocked at least as much as the other party leaders, surely? Maybe not so much by the sympathetic papers, but then Red Ed hasn't been mocked by The Mirror or The Grauniad either.

Maybe it should, but funding for it was coming from the developer, which we were assured would be fine. We'll see.

James, over on the Railway Rise development thread, there's been mention of the old garden centre site development stalling. Please can you clarify that this will not affect the development of the new library and that the Council will not shut or run down Grove Vale Library until a new library opposite is up and running?

... which will help give the Council the excuse to shut Grove Vale Library and not open a new one on the old garden centre site as planned because the development has stalled. As I mentioned to Cllr Barber a while ago, the new library is by no means a done deal.

FWIW I think A roads and B roads in cities should be 30mph and all other roads 20mph, though you might feel I callously ignore the lives of pedestrians by doing so. I'll continue to speak out on issues I feel are of importance to me, my family and my local area. If you don't mind, of course.

Well, that was an intemperate little rant. Personally I think we should be vigilant about what those we elect into power do. That's democracy, innit?

First two questions of the 'consultation': "The aim of the new school is to prepare its children for happy lives and academic success. Do you agree that this is a suitable aim? ❑ Yes ❑ No The new school will encourage children in work and in play, towards the traditional values of good manners, enthusiasm for learning and recognising right from wrong. Do you agree that this is a suitable ethos? ❑ Yes ❑ No" This is not a consultation, it's pathetic PR.

It's the modern use of 'junk mail' that conflates things. As previously understood, 'junk mail' was unsolicited addressed mail, eg Reader's Digest prize draws etc. The Mail Preference Scheme should ensure you don't receve these. And you can sign up with the Royal Mail not to receive unaddressed flyers. Not that I'm a fan of 'junk mail', but I don't understand why it's uniquely picked out as being 'wasteful'. What about the amount of energy and resources that go into TV advertising, billboards and other forms of unsolicited marketing? Printing up pizza leaflets could be seen as pretty modest by compmarison.

Solo - some good songs, but mostly meh. Style Council ? the consensus is they were crap. And I agree with the consensus. The Jam ? started off brilliant, went off a bit towards the end. Saw this the other day on Sky Arts and remembered how great The Jam were live:

Il Mirto seems to be doing fine and, according to the SE23 Forum, it's a second branch not a move. Good luck to them. I suspect their rent on that stretch of Melbourne Grove isn't too onerous.
