  1. Marina O'Loughlin has been tweeting today about her Peckham "safari", and mentioned a very well known (Persepolis) shop as one of her first Peckham "discoveries". This sort of language annoys me. NB Although she's been in the Refreshment Rooms and Begging Bowl, she makes sure to mention that she likes Rye Lane too.
  2. "When we got off I thought that the station was the Crystal Palace as it was so large with at least ten platforms and a glass covered roof." Captures the childhood eye very well, this. As well as the "smell of horsehair" detail. Thanks, Shorty.

I think he was in > denial. Or maybe just a bit thick. Yeahbut, surely a MILF is a MILF regardless of the age of the objectifying penis-wielder. That is to say, a woman who is a mother and also lucky enough to be included on said idiot's imaginary "would" list, is de facto a MILF in that she is: a) a mother b) someone he would like to f***. She doesn't actually have to be old enough to *be* the knuckle-dragging fool's mother to qualify for the label. I mean, when considering the objectifying categorisation of attractive women we should be clear in our understanding. Further, an issue may arise in identifying whether the appraised sexual object is indeed a mother, or merely a women of a certain age (shall we say 30-35 and upwards?) who also happens to satisfy the sexual check list of the appraiser. I guess at this point she is merely a WILF. It may be interesting to consider why the attainment of motherhood is, however, deemed the important signifier rather than the mere fact of her age. Further, if the objectifier is of a similar age to the object we should ask, why would this man draw attention to the age of the woman (mother or not) at all? I think we should consider that by viewing his sexual attraction to a person his own age as worthy of comment, the man in question is tacitly confirming that his libido is usually to be found wallowing around secondary schools at going home time. In short, he's probably a paedo and/or harbours unresolved oedipal fantasies. Did you raise this on the stag do, Jeremy? I'd be interested to hear how it went.
  4. Cannot be arsed to actually read an article on this, but do any of the three chosen names have any specific Middleton significance or relevance?
  5. I like a bit of 1930s - like many. If you ignore the tatty state of this building and redressed the Lloyds frontage, put back the windows that I assume were originally there, and removed the blue porch, it could easily fit along some Metroland station approach in north west London. And maybe that's where it should be. Perhaps, and rather unfortunately, what we have is a decent enough (no more than that) building in the wrong place. Does that make it worth saving versus the Peckham Vision plan for the Plaza/Gateway? That really depends how far back we want to go to get to where we want to be (and also on where we want to be). http://i39.tinypic.com/rixhxe.jpg (PS This above is a comment about the buildings, not the livelihoods/businesses of those inside, btw. )
  6. HonaB - Donald McGill's original of the Hangover gag about 20 secs into this clip from the BBC's Rude Britannia series from a couple of years back. (added extra: up and down nightie joke at about 1:40) http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p0089r35
  7. Weakly handing over his garlic bread like that, though - the handy lads on the Gallery Road thread will have strong views on that.

I think Mr Smith has turned up at the newspaper offices unannounced with his "symbol" and they've sent the summer workie down to do the business.
  11. What's the point of posting this? Are you advocating assertiveness training for 'private school kid types'* to stop them being such passive victims, or education (perhaps telepathy) in making a snap assessment as to whether someone is asking for your phone with "no aggression" or is about to knock you to the pavement. At the moment, it's got a whiff of blame the victim (4 times? LOLS) which I'm sure is not your aim. stacey-lyn Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I would be interested in the OP's reply. TH was indeed not in same league as AM but "an average jobbing player at best"? He was a lot more than that. Top 20 ranking for nearly a decade, and much of it in top ten. 28 ATP finals, 11 wins. 6 grand slam semis - one of them at RG which was pretty remarkable for him. He made the absolute most of a pretty limited set of physical attributes.
  13. Sneer sneer, assumption assumption, obligatory disclaimer about ironic beards etc. But anyway: London Contemporary Music Festival - two weekends of free contemporary music on top of Peckham car park - tickets just gone up for booking overnight: http://lcmf.co.uk/ Twitter account at: https://twitter.com/LCMFPeckham
  14. It was only going half way up, to be fair. Lack of ambition there. david_carnell Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Something twice as high as the Shard. 15. Entries from residents of 15 Relf Road and 26 Tarbert Road were amongst 68 designs entered in the Great Tower for London competition of 1890. http://www.brixtonbuzz.com/2013/06/gasp-at-the-south-london-entries-for-the-1890-great-tower-of-london-competition/ You can see all the designs entered here: http://publicdomainreview.org/2012/07/16/catalogue-of-the-68-competitive-designs-for-the-great-tower-for-london-1890/

  23. Add in Paxman and his "armoured train" loaded with 8% of the BofE gold reserve heading north etc. (actually add in the regular cliff faces of self-regard clashing as 'ec crosses swords with Paxo) What's been, er, annoying about these "entertainments" is the exploitation of the cultural cringe factor, the playing on the sense that of course the poor old Scots couldn't handle the responsibilities of independence. Paxman and his eyebrows would make me want to vote yes (if I had a vote) just to stick it up that patrician disregard. But overall, appeals to nationalism...too ugly, too late. Appeals to democratic accountability...yes of course. It all depends what you define as the relevant unit of population/nationhood, which I think is eventually a gut/heart decision. Another thing. Say Labour does lose its block of Scottish MPs from Westminster, even as part of some sort of Devo Max arrangement. It looks like you then get a permanent English Tory majority, but given that possibility maybe we would see some re-balancing of party politics within England? Pipedream for a Friday lunchtime, obviously.
