  1. No-one in the press seems to know anything about him, or if they do they haven't written it down. Revered by a billion, 20 year career at the top of his sport, and he's really just a bloke with a bat in his hands. Not sure how he's managed it.
  2. Feeling a bit grey/ gray, to be honest, Jack. As you indicated in that piece, you are observing changes that you are a part of. That's been the way of the EDF (And I know you love the EDF) for the past 7 years, after all: It's all there: Farrow & Ball paint jobs, "Village" nomenclature, twee shit shops, and yet always persistent attempts to distance selves from same. Who are all these people who shop in the grey shops and live behind the grey doors? Surely not us, not a future you? Hence you've been a bit mean to the GS folks. We need an acceptable target for our own frustration with what we suspect we have brought about. Yet... do you feel responsible? I don't either, but I buy meat in F&H and I'm not going to tramp to the next mini-market just because Payless has put up a grey fascia and called itself Village Grocer in an effort to cash in on a trend that it itself has just given another nudge downhill. Best thing to do: write articles on fashionable websites, updates on Twitter, posts on EDF, letting everyone know we're not part of this thing we're part of.
  3. Hey Jack, how's it going?
  4. Or, "what PGC said"
  5. "Kings Arms" = pub formerly on site of what was known later as Kings on the Rye, MP. (now flats - with a bus stop bearing the KotR name) This is an 1862 map showing the pub at that junction. http://www.mappalondon.com/london/south-east/peckham-rye.jpg (From http://www.mappalondon.com/london/south-east/map-london.htm)
  6. adonirum, entering the shop, is quickly assessed by the sharp-witted assistant... http://i43.tinypic.com/10nx8o4.jpg ...and having asked for a pre-order of the "Hoops and Bhoys" 2013 annual, is sent on his way http://i44.tinypic.com/2csao2u.jpg
  7. Steveo touches on a poignant issue. Demise of Woolworths also meant demise of another entry-level shoplifter training ground. Huge long corridors of high displays, no budget for security: even the novice lifter (sorry Steve) could walk out of there with half an office of stationery down their C&A underpants. Littlewoods the same, because the staff didn't give a toss and were virtually cheering you out the door. Once you'd got over the simple basics, these transferrable skills could be applied in C&A, BHS and HMV. Supermarkets getting into clothing lines, and the domination of digital music, ruined the lifting community.

  9. What are you having done, *Bob*?

  13. What does this mean?
  14. This thread encapsulated some proper all-comers idiocy, wasn't it? The sort of thread that makes people reading it shake their heads and have a long, long stare out the window. Sorry for resurrecting.

  16. Seeking Alpha can be useful source, perhaps more for company and market (rather than economic) news: You can set up alerts for companies as well, if he needs to track any specific stocks. Plus they do transcripts of earnings calls which may give him an insight into how listed companies go about reporting results, and the sorts of questions analysts ask etc. http://seekingalpha.com/tag/transcripts
  17. All good suggestions. Here's a really handy way to keep across those outlets. Reuters on twitter City AM on twitter BBC Business on twitter Independent (home of Hamish McRae) biz section on twitter.
  18. Marina O'Loughlin has been tweeting today about her Peckham "safari", and mentioned a very well known (Persepolis) shop as one of her first Peckham "discoveries". This sort of language annoys me. NB Although she's been in the Refreshment Rooms and Begging Bowl, she makes sure to mention that she likes Rye Lane too.
  19. "When we got off I thought that the station was the Crystal Palace as it was so large with at least ten platforms and a glass covered roof." Captures the childhood eye very well, this. As well as the "smell of horsehair" detail. Thanks, Shorty.
  20. Jeremy Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > A couple of years ago I was on a stag weekend with > a bunch of guys who were mainly in their late 30s. > One of them repeatedly used the phrase "MILF" over > the weekend to describe good looking women only > slightly older than himself. I think he was in > denial. Or maybe just a bit thick. Yeahbut, surely a MILF is a MILF regardless of the age of the objectifying penis-wielder. That is to say, a woman who is a mother and also lucky enough to be included on said idiot's imaginary "would" list, is de facto a MILF in that she is: a) a mother b) someone he would like to f***. She doesn't actually have to be old enough to *be* the knuckle-dragging fool's mother to qualify for the label. I mean, when considering the objectifying categorisation of attractive women we should be clear in our understanding. Further, an issue may arise in identifying whether the appraised sexual object is indeed a mother, or merely a women of a certain age (shall we say 30-35 and upwards?) who also happens to satisfy the sexual check list of the appraiser. I guess at this point she is merely a WILF. It may be interesting to consider why the attainment of motherhood is, however, deemed the important signifier rather than the mere fact of her age. Further, if the objectifier is of a similar age to the object we should ask, why would this man draw attention to the age of the woman (mother or not) at all? I think we should consider that by viewing his sexual attraction to a person his own age as worthy of comment, the man in question is tacitly confirming that his libido is usually to be found wallowing around secondary schools at going home time. In short, he's probably a paedo and/or harbours unresolved oedipal fantasies. Did you raise this on the stag do, Jeremy? I'd be interested to hear how it went.
  21. Cannot be arsed to actually read an article on this, but do any of the three chosen names have any specific Middleton significance or relevance?
  22. I like a bit of 1930s - like many. If you ignore the tatty state of this building and redressed the Lloyds frontage, put back the windows that I assume were originally there, and removed the blue porch, it could easily fit along some Metroland station approach in north west London. And maybe that's where it should be. Perhaps, and rather unfortunately, what we have is a decent enough (no more than that) building in the wrong place. Does that make it worth saving versus the Peckham Vision plan for the Plaza/Gateway? That really depends how far back we want to go to get to where we want to be (and also on where we want to be). http://i39.tinypic.com/rixhxe.jpg (PS This above is a comment about the buildings, not the livelihoods/businesses of those inside, btw. )
  23. HonaB - Donald McGill's original of the Hangover gag about 20 secs into this clip from the BBC's Rude Britannia series from a couple of years back. (added extra: up and down nightie joke at about 1:40) http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p0089r35
  24. Weakly handing over his garlic bread like that, though - the handy lads on the Gallery Road thread will have strong views on that.
