I thought it was quite a good read to be fair, and the words suggest more than three stars, so it's worth reading. And I feel I need to go there soon. "But it is good, I think: quite good by any standards; very good for a neighbourhood joint"
-
Bugger 5.30 - was on Pendra at 28/1 - beaten on the line, was counting my money already. Bah
-
No winners yesterday, but Tuesday was good so am up even after deducting today's bets, already placed - so going into tomorrow will be up. Tomorrow will be messy and expensive but at least this year I haven't lost a fortune before I set off!
-
Loser in the opener. Next im going for Acapella in the 2.10
-
Woohoo. I was at a seminar, and just came out to find that one won too. :) three wins in a day. Nice
-
No good - and so it will be Tully East in the last at 5.30
-
And got the next Apple Jade - as per tipster above. Two wins in a row - never happens. Small bets these days though. Arpege Darlene in the 4.50 for the hat trick (and bigbadjohn for a place)
-
Got the champion hurdle winner at 5/1. nothing else.

Friend of friend is an amateur tipster - here goes Right we?re off again ? another good year last year ? lets keep at it Plenty of good bets landed last year many bankers obliged all week This year it?s a very different festival ? so many injuries and a list of stars missing... It has made all the markets a lot more open if lacking in some quality. Due to that I will not be afraid of big prices this week ? may be playing a bit more each way then usual and less Bankers I think I will often back two in some races esp hcaps instead of going each way I have mentioned a lot more horses below but later in week I cannot be sure of fields and this should at least be a guide Horses put up below but many of races not filled as this time and during the week things will change and I will play other horses. The horses with *** are good bets though I am interested in and will be running in their races. Also the ones for multiples for the week. Day 1 Tuesday Supreme novices A really open renewal of the race and all the talk has been the extremely lightly raced Melon. He will need to be exceptional to win it on day given only had one run. I may get involved in the hype on the day but I am putting forward his stable mate Bunk off Early a solid bet against the fav both of whom should love the drying ground Bets Bunk off Early Arkle Altior is unopposable Watch ? in betting w?out market Cloudy Dream a small interest Ultima chase First big hcap of the meeting, I want to have Alan King by my side all week in hcaps Label Des Obeaux is one I want to be with also playing Singlefarmpayment the likely favourite Others to look out for is Kruzlinen last years pick at a big price, Caid Du Berlais another to look at in market. Bets Label Des Obeaux ew Singlefarmpayment ew Champion Hurdle A poor renewal ? injuries to the ante post favourites have weakened this race to the extent that even the New One could have a chance. When Cllr Rosie Shimell, former councillor Jonathan Mitchell and I were searching for cinema operators we had four interested parties and the Picturehouse won out with the landlord. So I don't see a risk of this boycott in us losing such a valuable local resource. But I do feel concern about a boycott of one cinema when we don't know how people are paid at the alternative."

Well, let's just agree that the OP is supposedly an ethical stance and people on the same thread are suggesting going to Peckham Plex, so obviously people feel the need to points out the uselessness of that as an alternative venue in the event that you follow the OPs advice to boycott ED PH.

I don't think in the financial world it would be seen as a comparable at all. ED PH's comparables are the higher end cinemas, and in that respect I think its charges are fair. Peckham is an outlier in charging only ?5. Possibly one of the cheapest in London. Its not something ED PH will be comparing itself to when looking at product and price.

I have never paid that at ED PH And anyway, we should be comparing it to it's peers , not to bargain basement Peckham Plex. I'd guess ED PH is charging the same as most other cinemas.

James Barber Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- If East Dulwich Picturehouse closed Curzon would snap the lease up So I don't see a risk of this boycott in us losing such a valuable local resource. Gawd help us. The most amazing cinema possibly to be replaced by Curzon and the local Councillor seems ok with that prospect. There is a huge amount of capital expenditure in the opening of any cinema. I doff my hat to Picturehouse in the risk taken in creating such a wonderful space and no doubt a good place to be employed. I'm intending to ask the staff how they feel about their employment there the next time I'm in there, although I understand that they may feel conflicted. As someone else suggested, tipping helps significantly. Of course only people who use the cinema can tip, those who don't cant and those who boycott cant either.

Since Christmas I've been reading a book called "the Cheese and I", about an English accountant (Matt) who packed in his job, took to the road and became an award winning cheese maker in France. Being myself employed in a mostly desk based finance role, I found this story very liberating during my journey to work in the post Christmas winter weeks. Although through reading the book, I found out how difficult a life the cheese business is. Early in his journey Matt met and was interviewed by Herve the owner of Mons the French cheese business. He went on to have many dealings with Herve and work behind the scenes and then front of shop for Mons in the Lyon area, learning the trade. Lo and behold I was walking down Lordship Lane on Saturday to find that Mons is now opening what seems to be it's first permanent establishment in England in East Dulwich. Existing operations are I guess semi permanent in that they are market based, including Borough Market, since 2006. I know it's been highlighted elsewhere on the forum, but from not having heard of Mons until reading the book, this feels like an amazing personal coincidence, and creates a trio of French operations on LL near Franklins, adding to Boulangerie Jade and Cave de Bruno. Everything we need, bread, cake, wine and cheese - Vive la France. And with Moxons, William Rose, Franklins restaurant and Farm Shop, this really is becoming the culinary high spot of Lordship Lane, where once Franklins was a bit of an outlier, standing alone amongst tyre shops and chicken shops. What wonderful "progress" for us all to enjoy.

I like that Robbin I went to the opening Saturday night of the ED Picturehouse a year or two ago. I thought I was in the Almeida or the Donmar, with so many blazers and corduroy around. That was a bit much, but there's no reason why cinema has to be watched in the terrible surroundings that exist in some cinemas. The Plex is great value, but I'd prefer to spend the extra 5 pound.

It says on the picturehouse website, ?9.05 per hour in London compared to 7.20 living wage. Pay rates at Picturehouse Cinemas Pay rates and benefits are negotiated by the Forum, a recognised union with collective bargaining rights for all Picturehouse cinema staff excluding those working at the Ritzy. We negotiate pay rates each year and a new pay rate for 2016-2017 has just been agreed by a 72% majority vote. Our starting pay rates, not including any benefits, are ?8.18 per hour in our regional cinemas and ?9.05 in London, significantly above the Government legislated National Living Wage (?7.20 per hour) and Minimum Wage (?6.95 per hour). Pay is further enhanced by individual and cinema-wide shared bonus schemes. https://www.picturehouses.com/pay

I don't mourn a LL curry house closing down because....
Mick Mac replied to DovertheRoad's topic in The Lounge
Indeed, love it, but I only need one curry house for that, not 10. And I only do that once a month, so I'm "oversupplied" so to speak.
