  1. Without referring to any evidence I can say I would happily give it for a week or more on the small quantities you describe And When one if my twins was seriously I'll in hospital with s kidney infection they gave her the maximum Dose of paracetemol and nurofen for 6 days straight
  2. There are crash courses at dulwich college quite often too
  3. I am not at all fussed what other people do ... but i do dislike it when the facts come under attack. It's quite fine not to breastfeed, of course it is... but not necessary to then bash the women who do breastfeed. Same with any other choice. The SAHM thing is one such.
  4. There is other research into the long term effects though, not picked up by the studies gathered together by WHO, that's all. I have spent a lot if time trying to work out to what extent that research shows causality regarding the reduction in heart disease etc later in life and to what extent it might be more a reflection of a generally healthier lifestyle post weaning But on balance I came to thd conclusion it wS best to wait to wean. However while that research is harder to interpret, that doesn't apply to the research into the benefits of bf overall Coming back to the duration of exclusive bf, I note the scientific advisory committee on nutrition are sticking with the 6m advice re introduction of gluten, post the flurry of newspaper articles not long ago http://www.sacn.gov.uk/pdfs/draft_smcn_minutes_19th_january_2011_draft_3.pdf
  5. One of the main difficulties with these studies is to isolate the factors, of course Because after infant feeding comes childhood nutrition, of course I will dig out links from my pc when I can because I have spent quite a lot of time looking at this But just before I go to bed, inthink those talking about the WHO report have missed something http://www.who.int/nutrition/topics/optimal_duration_of_exc_bfeeding_review_eng.pdf The data collected was comparing children exclusively breastfed for a minimum of 3m then introduced to comPlementary foods between 3-7m vs those exclusively bf to 6m So the findings aren't about formula vs breastfeeding at all, but about optimum age for weaning I am not sure that is understood in some of the comments above ...
  6. Thats not true ... There is evidence linking reduced incidence of adult obesity, heart disease and diabetes to longer exclusive bf So very relevant to us here in the uk
  7. iPhone = surf and feed baby simultaneously :-)
  8. One thing that never ceases to amaze is that even now I can stumble across benefits of bf I didn't know about previously From my recent Internet history Something about intestinal flora - http://www.facebook.com/note.php?note_id=89727716908 ANC something about jaw development http://www.brianpalmerdds.com/bfeed_oralcavity.htm
  9. It will be interesting to know, James Each school takes from an area around it so many of the places will be filled by pupils on the borders of ED or possibly even further afield I would bd very interested to know the info for each school with thd breakdown of initial allocations Inc no of siblings, distance criteria and then thd eventual distance of thd furthest child after shakedown and bulge classes

Whilst I accept > that 'breast is best' I wouldn't necessarily > describe formula as a 'very poor alternative'- The WHO recommend milk from the mother Milk from another mother then formula comes in third and I'm afraid the more you research it, the more you realise just what a complex substance breastmilk is, and how many benefits there are to breastfeeding. I appreciate it's depressing to hear it if you didn't manage to breast feed. But I don't get cross at SAHMs just because I work! I am aware of the research about what is best for small children, but i do what I have to do. I don't feel guilty, but nor do i deny the facts. We just do our best, noone can ask more. Nothing to feel guilty about.
  11. Great post saffron Having struggled with breastfeeding my most recent baby, I have the utmost sympathy for those who give up breastfeeding due to lack of support But that doesn't mean we have to pretend that breastfeeding isn't an infinitely superior form of nutrition for our babies, or to be more precise, formula is a very poor alternative from a nutritional and immunological point of view
  12. The Nger us t just about pensions but about free schools and academies, cuts to school capitL funding, etc etc Though it's not true teachers have had a pay freeze Sept 2011 is final instalment of a 3 year deal - 2.3% increase
  13. I don't think there are mixed messages about the benefits either The benefits are clear but it's very popular in the media to try to undermine them What would be far more useful and original would be a discussion about how the dismal bf rates in this country could actually be improved
  14. Another vote for thd Gregor series ( library ordered it in) And time riders ... Alex scarrow?
  15. Do breast feeding mothers think the messages are mixed?
  16. Swim at 11 them ling nap right after p
  17. It's not quite so simple mrs h Thd nursery will need to have signed a funding agreement and may need a declaration from each family ... And funding cN be withdrawn for persistent absence but it does sound like it has been withdrawn wrongly or thd nursery have got confused
  18. I would go for a cheap light small second hand lie flat buggy (mclaren) and then sell that and get a nipper 360 second hand if you have no 2 with a small gap
  19. There is a one hour session Think it's at 12 Often it's fully booked up in advance though
  20. And there's even an iPhone app and video! http://www.pottytrainingtoddlers.co.uk/potty-training-advice/i-love-potty-training-iphone-ipad-app-e-book-video-by-joy-berry Right ... Night!
  21. And ' Liam Goes Poo in the Toilet by Jane Whelan Banks (Jessica Kingsley Publishers) This small square picture book is one of six titles in ?The Lovable Liam series? each of which looks at learning a basic social skill. Subtitled ?A Story about Trouble with Toilet Training? this straightforward book, essentially an instruction guide, takes us and Liam through the processes of eating and excreting, showing the relationship between the two. The child-like nature of the line drawings and the simplicity of the brief narrative provide just enough information for sharing with those children who, for whatever reason, find learning to use the toilet a particular challenge.'
