  1. I agree re the blinds, the difficulty with them is you can't easily go through and close behind you. We had in our old flat. But a toddler couldn't open it. In our current flat we have bogstandard fixed to the wall gate and it's just as well as we go through it 1000 times a day (separates living room from kitchen and bathroom)
  2. The gates that are like little roller blinds don't require two solid surfaces in the same way... Though you may need to fit a post of soem sort... it's also possible to buy some sort of attachment that lets you fic a gate to a round banister. But have a look here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Lascal-KiddyGuard-Safety-Gate/dp/B00009SS6B/ref=pd_sim_by_5
  3. Time travellers wife is one of my fave books so I will try the follow up... Read eveyrthing by Philippa Gregory...
  4. I think I've read the Linwood Barclay, but not the rest...
  5. Yes, I'm optimistic! Any ideas? Please make suggestions of books I can get from the library, preferably. I like all sorts, some historical fiction, women private eyes, the woman who wrote death du jour, the sort of general paperbacks you biy at stations in the 3 for 2 offers (but not chicklit) science fantasy... thrillery sort of books but not too gorey.
  6. Each time, the first sweep I have had has been very painful (smear = .5/10, sweep, 5/10, early-mid labour 6/10) I think if gas and air was offered it would be a good backup as it would work very well (I didn't actually like gas and air in labour with twin II at all, it made me feel very stoned and dizzy) but for a minute or two during the sweep it would be a good thing that you lost all memory of the event!
  7. Had three with DS1 (went into labour after the third, there were 11 days betwen 1st and 3rd) Had two with the twins, a week apart, no effect...

Supply teachers cost 2x the amount and often aren't very good! Point I'm making is, TAs are a cost effective solution to many problems. I am not so sure schools will be looking to cut them.
  9. I made a complaint about my HV after she made me cry telling me I'd put DS1 at risk taking him swimming before his vaccs, made me sign to say I'd taken the vaccs booklet, booklet turns out to say it's fien to take baby swimming before vaccs (and I had in fact spoken to the GP about it anyway) Then different HV suggested peanut butter on toast as a good first finger food (we have terrible allergies in our family, actually not wise to introduce peanuts till MUCH later, nor gluten) I never went back.
  10. This would be a good idea of the price was comparable to buying and selling stuff second hand.. though I'm not sure it could be. I bought a second hand jumperoo for ?25 and sold it after we'd used it, for much the same.
  11. I'm afraid amongst many mums I know, the image of the HV is poor, due to inconsistnt or incorrect advice given out. Rebranding yourself somehow to avoid the "HV" label might be no bad thing. Proper knowledgeable and non-directive advice and support on issues like breasrfeeding, weaning, weight, sleep etc is worth its weight in gold, but I'm not sure how many women feel that's what they get from their HV
  12. Education used to run with all the kids sitting looking at the front and if there were some that fell behind, as long as they weren't disruptive, they were probably just marked as slow... there were no 'gifted and talented' programmes. And most SEN pupils were in special schools. Now 'personalised learning' with different pupils working at different levels and specific support provided in class is all the rage. (And while secondary schools use 'setting' in a primary school all this is delivered in the class)
  13. TAs do several roles Some worth with specific SEN pupils Some work on intervention or withdrawal of various types (catching up with reading, SATs preparation etc etc) Some work as a second adult in the classroom (imagine trying to teach 30 5 year olds by yourself as a teacher and ensure they get individual attention!) Some (Higher level) will cover teachers who aren't in class - all teachers get a minimum of 1/2 day p/w planning and preparation time. Salaries aren't high, if anything i think many schools struggling with tight budgets will be looking to lose 'excess' teachers and replace them with support staff (TAs, cover supervisors etc)

  16. One o'clock club each after nooon Peckham rye (lovely to sit outside on the grass) and Crystal Palace o'c club ams and pms (not free) Swimming/softplay at peckham Still some stuff on at the library and at the Horniman but most groups take a break over the summer
  17. For a picnic could I suggest the picnic area at P Rye, ot the sandpit by the Horniman? D Park is so perilous with twins with the roundabout stuck in between the toddler slide etc, gates at both ends and swings not fenced off...
  18. I didn't get alongt oday as didn't rellay feel i could elave MrF alonw with our brood. Maybe next time? Though with an EED of 28th nov, i will prob be a December mum anyway
  19. It's not always easy to be discreet if the baby has other ideas!! Don't they just love to pull away and flash those close by with a milky grin!
  20. My job is demanding at times and I have a long commute (do two days in the office, 2 at home) and my bf 2 yo twins still wake at night and sometimes it takes till 9pm to get one of them settled... and I'm pregnant! So I do feel for you. I think you are doing too much, as the others have said. It's not easy dealing with a night waking bf baby AND working even a few days a week, let alone full time. Can you take a few days off and catch up with your sleep then have a serious talk with your partner about what's going on? x

  22. Why not ask to start work 8.15 or 8.30 onwards? (Or even better, to do flexi time.. then no need to stress if you start at slightly different times each day depending on the commute...)
