  1. I had my two interviews today and only one asked me what my current salary was, but they also asked me what other commitments i have. I explained that i do some gardening and grow food but that doesn't take up much time, but they pushed on, "what about children?"! I thought it was illegal to ask women that question! Anyway, i explained that i've successfully juggled having 4 kids with working for the past 23 years, so don't think i'll have any problems there! Despite that little blood pressure raising question and the fact i was honest about my lowly salary, i think that both interviews went quite well. I only have to wait and see if i get an offer!

  3. How the West loves to build up dictators and then switch alliegences when they don't behave!
  4. I do a lot of Zimbawean asylum claims and something I've noticed from the country research I do is that the violence of the Mugabe regime has escalated in the past year and isn't just targetted at MDC supporters any more. Also him and his ministers use control of medical drugs and food as a weapon against non-ZANU-PF Zimbaweans with catastrophic consequences. Cholera is killing thousands of people and a third of all Zimbabweans are HIV positive. If somone doesn't do something soon, it will be as bad as Pol Pot in Campuchea. But saying that, the west has been financially supporting the MDC for years so many other African countries support Mugabe in his view that the MDC are western, imperialsit puppets, so deciding who should do something, may be a problem and if not handled properly could inflame a continent that has endured more than it's fair share of confict already.
  5. Got to admit she looked good in the battle scene. Most women can't do action hero convincingly, but she was pretty good.
  6. Honesty seems to be more than just a virtue!
  7. I always feel the love from you guys

  9. Maybe, but I never managed it. I may be a bad example tho because i had the holy crap beaten out of me as a kid, and grew up very angry. My mum was a pretty nasty piece of work alltogether so lack of love may have made it worse. I've met rounded people who were beaten by their parents, but who were also shown unconditional love, so i think lack of love may be more damaging than being hit.
  10. I actually agree partly with Daizie because parents need to be in charge and shouldn't let their child think they have equal rights to decide on matters they have too little experience and understanding to make decisions on. I think being firm with annoying kids is necessary to prevent kids from becoming selfish and obnoxious adults. You do your kids no favours by making them feel that they are the centre of the universe because they will be forever disappointed when they grow up and no-one else feels the same way about them! Unconditional love and encouragement to reach their potential are also needed, but without constructive criticism or boundaries, kids grow up with a skewed and unhelpful view of themselves in the world.
  11. I cycle everywhere and have done for 20 odd years. I've had a few scrapes but nothing serious. You have to be hyper aware and assertive when cycling in London and do things like watching the faces of drivers by looking in their mirrors and windows to see if they have seen you or not. It can be scary but as more people take up cycling drivers should become more aware of us and hopefully it will become safer.
  12. Great advice, thanks everyone x
  13. Yes, I found out on Friday when my friend covered her class and I attended. I've never done her classes, but it felt really awful knowing that it was her who had died.
  14. Yeh, I think you are right. Thanks, I didn't realise it was considered so serious to lie about your salary! Obviously lying about your qualifications or work experience is bad, but I assumed the salary bit wasn't. I'm thinking that I may just have to fess up or turn it round.
  15. That's horrible. I don't know what I'd do if someone tried something like that with my dog. I'd be mortified.
  16. I like the 'expectations' part. I think I may skip the current salary question if I can and just say what my expectations are. But saying what I've been offered by the other one might be good too.
  17. Haha that's if they actually want me tho!
  18. So how do I get round the laughable salary? Just say I'd rather not discuss such personal issues?
  19. I've got two interviews this week and am hoping to break out of the bottom rung of legal pay which is worse paid than a McJob, but I know that the interviwer will ask me what my curent salary is in order to gaugue what level they can offer me. So as a relative newcomer to all this professional malarky, I'd like to know if it's ok to lie about your current salary when going for a job interview? Advice please. Edited for crappy spelling.
  20. Apparently the girl who died at Elephant & Castle worked as a fitness instructor at Dulwich Fusion. I went to the class she normally taught on Friday lunchtime because my friend had to cover it for her.
  21. I wonder if they will chase up any of the other cops who beat up peaceful protesters now they have all that lovely evidence?
  22. and my previous moniker was ironic (and partly a declaration of war!)
  23. That's nice for you daizie, but I haven't totally sold out my class so it does offend me. Plus I've been a Council tenant for about 25 years and have so far resisted the temptation to buy, because I was brought up to believe that council housing/schools/hospitals etc belong to all of us and it's morally wrong to sell them off for a quick buck. Sorry - didn't mean it to sound harsh but it pisses me off that working class people have also adopted the word Chav as a put down to the 'underclass, in the same sneering, gang up and bully the bottom of the pile way that the middle/upper classes do. Where's the working class solidarity gone?
