What a ridiculous response. Clearly it's about context. Is this what you mean by context? If it's you or your loved ones being targeted or threatened then it's ok, but if it's an 'urban' youth being targeted or threatened then they should be strung up or banged up for life?

Sea Air - why does it make you so tired?
LegalEagle-ish replied to LegalEagle-ish's topic in The Lounge
I do more scampering around in London - so it's not that. My mate moved out to the sea side about 8 months ago and took a couple of months to acclimatise and stop falling asleep all the time. Maybe it is the salt or the ions or something. -
The world has gone mad. They don't have anything serious to complain about, like global warming and illegal wars, so they are up in arms about fecking wheelie bins.

What about if it is in self-defence? Or defence of one's property? Or defence of one's family? Or defence of one's friends? If you feel that you are likely to be targeted by someone who may kill you or others you care about, is it ok then to stab someone?

I Know everyone says it makes you sleepy, and i've just experienced it for myself again, but does anyone have any scientific reason that spending time by the sea knocks you out?

I've given up booze (again) to help my new diet and fitness regime, otherwise I'd join you. Got to say, I feel pretty sick about people blaming the kids for reacting to situations that overwhelm and terrify them. I used to be scared every time my son went out when we lived on the Rockingham Estate, because I knew even though he wasn't a trouble maker and had done martial arts since he was four, he could still end up getting shot or stabbed by someone who needed to boost up their self esteem by acting gangsta. There were always wars with our estate and the next one and even though I knew a lot of kids who got involved, they all felt like they had no choice. The levels of everyday violence were very high and the police coming like storm troopers arresting everyone, instead of bothering to find out who was a victim and who was a perpetrator, just added to the feeling of vulnerability of the victims. Most did not think the police would take them seriously or protect them, so they felt they had to protect themselves. It's not fault of the kids who are forced to grow up in those kinds of environments, it's all of the adults who have let them down - including the ones in the comfortable suburbs who don't give a shit until the bloodshed spills onto their streets.

attempted mugging - North Cross Road

I agree - I think the confidence that comes with being fitter and doing martial arts might help make you look less like a target more than be any real use. But I have had situations in the past (not in East Dulwich) that could have resulted in me being a victim, but my instinct was to fight back and although I was still shaken, it didn't knock my confidence because the perps had not got what they wanted. If I had had time to think I probably wouldn't have fought back because afterwards, each time, I was hit by the realisation that I could have been badly hurt, but at the time, instinct just took over. I think that may be because I'd been a tomboy when I was young and used to fight a lot to protect my brothers. Getting older has spurred me into getting back into my martial arts, because I don't like feeling vulnerable. I do Taekwondo which is not the most useful martial art, but I love the fitness side of it, but if someone really wants to know how to protect themselves, Ju-jistsu it really good and effective even when you are smaller and weaker than you attacker. -
I not long ago threw one away - do you want me to see if he's still usable?

Galli - I'm on your side. Had to sell out on the class war front though in the end - had enough of being a working class hero to the apathetic, broken working class and decided to become a lawyer instead!

I'm really suprised that people get so worried about stuff round here. I make sure i stay aware and do martial arts, but i rarely feel that i can't walk where i want or use my mobile, especially in East Dulwich. Maybe people who are able, should think about increasing their fitness levels and doing some kind of martial arts. I'd hate to walk around being sacred all the time. -
They may have been looking for a doughnut shop.

Peckham man guilty of murdering French students
LegalEagle-ish replied to Sherwick's topic in The Lounge
I disagreed with the Saddam murder because it weakened the pitiful authority of the Western Forces and looked like it was done by the US as a way of shutting him up and getting their own back on him for turning against them after he'd been put in power by the US in the first place. -

So how are you going to make sure of that Tony? The statistics on miscarriages of justice are frightening. If you are banged up for 30 years for something you didn't do, at least you can be released and try to recover some of your life. You can't bring an innocent person back from the dead tho, so i don't think the death penalty is ever justified, cos if that was someone i loved killed by the state for something they hadn't done, i think i'd end up a very angry individual indeed.
