  2. Bought the BEST pair of kitchen scissors I've ever had from one of these guys about 5 years ago. Cuts just about everything, metal included.
  3. Daniel Keyes - Flowers for Algernon comes with a mild health warning in that its a bit depressing, but I guess that would go for plenty of the others ...
  4. Yep - it's been remarkably quiet.. Please can someone 'in the know'/ councillor etc. give us a bit more info.. HP

No - I'm assuming Angelina meant the 'old' temporary site, i.e. Dulwich Hospital...

  9. Just seen this post. I think I saw her yesterday. There was a lady with what I'm pretty sure is a Dutch accent near Dog Kennel Hill Sainsburys at around 5 p.m. She very nicely asked me if I could spare any money for some food when I was at the cashpoint. I was a bit distracted worrying about my finances at the time and had given all my spare change to someone the day before so had to say I hadn't got anything. I felt bad immediately afterwards and wished I'd spoken to her more at least. She had a rucksack on so no evidence she was planning on staying there particularly, but perhaps worth people keeping an eye out there too? I've taken note of the reference number just in case I see her again. I hope she's OK. HP

I'll second this re: road surface. Always having to either stay pulled out (safer) or in and out around bumps :( Dangerous either way... Just ploughing on over the bumps - scary! HP

Think its quite thoughtful myself. a five-hour stretch is a long time for anyone to run a bonfire event: the younger ones get the chance to enjoy and run around before school's out and it gets dark and older ones the chance to enjoy later. HP Always a really lovely event.
  12. When I visit my Mum's in Market Harborough I can get an appointment at her local clinic without ANY problem on the day - I've had to do this a couple of times as well as using their walk-in local hospital service. Frankly it's quicker for me to get the train to Market Harborough and ask for an appointment than it is for me to get an appointment at 'my' doctors - DMC. HP
  13. The guys we got in - ONE visit only - brilliant! Anyway - they told us - but this was a few years ago that SE15/22 etc were partly bad being on main transport routes. They're also on London transport methods - buses/ underground etc. And yes, NOTHING to do with dirt. More here ( and try here for a real pre-Halloween frightener - http://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2009/feb/09/bed-bug-extermination ) "Call a professional extermination firm, and check its credentials. Many pest-control companies have diversified into bedbug control without any expertise. Following the advice of one company's website, we put grease-lined tins around our bed legs (to prevent bugs crawling up them). The exterminator guffawed at our stupidity. Don't try to kill the bugs yourself: last year an American woman blew up her home by lighting several insecticide "foggers" simultaneously: the propellant caused her gas supply to ignite. Don't use an aerosol-based insecticide, either: you'll kill some, but the fit ones will simply flee to another room. ? Don't throw away your furniture. The chances are that you will spread the bugs through your home. ? Don't flee the infested room. The bedbugs want food and warmth: if you go, they'll follow. ? Talk to your neighbours. It's possible your bugs have come from them, or that you have given them yours. One of David Cain's customers reported a recurring infestation. He was being reinfested by a neighbour, whose property was home to an estimated 150,000 bedbugs (the average infestation is around 100)."

If you get proper treatment no need to expensively throw anything away and the danger is you spread it by trying to chuck things out and don't get to the roots of the infestation. Washing and boiling won't always work either.. Read that website above for more sensible info... Speaking as a past bedbug infestation 'survivior' HP
  16. Absolutely do NOT do what holloway said - the bedbugs will just migrate and you might end up spreading them. You'll be very lucky (or will have caught them v. early )if they're just in the mattress. There used to be a thread on the forum but I can't find it now. Call these folks. The BEST: http://www.bed-bugs.co.uk/ (I say this as someone who had the same problem around 7 years ago. This company were brilliant. Followed their advice and treatment and didn't need any repeat visit!

  19. Kare Designs often do reasonably priced luxurious chairs - velvet patchwork etc. Sometimes they're cheap on Achica too! HP
  20. I was wondering if anyone knew what sort of music provision they gave to those who DIDN'T get a scholarship? Someone mentioned to me that a few of those they knew who didn't get scholarships actually found it hard to get involved because all the more proficient musicians got places on the bands etc... Do Kingsdale give any free individual lessons/ orchstra provision etc. to those without a scholarship? Appreciate your thoughts. HP

I guess people often just overlook those just outside of their local area( and are less 'familiar' with them(?) Going onto the online admissions map and finding ones I'd never heard of was an eyeopener.

I also really liked Forest Hill Boys and am not averse to Harris Boys (have visited all of these - some twice). I'm just saying that my personal preference would be for co-ed. Again personal preference but if I was in charge they would all be non-faith, co-ed schools... Agree on the 'hype' especially re: Habs - just don't get what the fuss is about: hated it. Deptford Green and COLA much better, forward thinking, inclusive and friendly co-ed choices IMO. In fact, the very heartening thing I thought was just how good all the ones I saw appear to be, and how lucky we are in London to have such good schools. I'd be frankly happy putting most of the local ones on the list. HP

Personal opinion, as I realise that they are the preference of some, but might help if there weren't so many single sex ones around here ... HP
  25. As it says on the tin really. My son's down to take their IT aptitute test on Saturday as they allocate some places this way..(also an opportunity to get another look at the school). Can't find much information about it at all and wondering if any of you good folk out there had any experience of it?? Thanks in advance, HP
