I guess there may be a bit of a 'sob story' here sometimes, but the guy I bought from really, I feel, needed a bit of a break. I hope that they're not being taken advantage by those getting them to sell ...

For the kitchen but hardcore -even used it to cut the lids off those massive oil cans when my friend's metal cutters couldn't manage it. Was suspicious of the quality at the time, but wish I'd bought more...
  4. Signed - agree with FGM it's an absolutely clear case. Hiding behind 'political correctness' or purported respect for 'cultural difference' as a reason to delay acting is cowardly.

Thanks for the info tfwsoll, Hadn't thought about the building regs and London Fire Brigade - good points! Apparently our Housing Association are cracking down on these sorts of occurrences in general so we will see.....

But - to elaborate - physically separating off a room in your house with a new wall built and a lock to make it a separate entity and renting out this room on a nightly basis advertised on the internet isn't taking in a lodger presumably because they're not sharing the home (?) Guessing then it may not be against this new legislation but pretty sure it must be against tenancy agreements and sure as hell is against the spirit of shared ownership...
  8. Does this include shared ownerships? It's been bugging me for ages that someone in our shared ownership block are letting one of their bedrooms and are letting it as a B n B. Never know who your going to meet on the stairs!

I suspect your fears about the proposed development will be correct.

Really great atmosphere - kids can play on the adventure playground, bands playing - last year's 'What Shall we do with the drunken sailor' a classic - can't remember the name of the band. ANyone?

Like you a used some hypnobirthing - home CD - and I'd been to pregnancy yoga lessons with the wonderful Ingrid Lewis which prepared me with various positions and breaths etc, and, I'm afraid I was treating the whole thing like a bit of a project as I knew what I DIDN'T want it to be like second time round. The lucky result: 4 hours from start of contractions to birth; no pain relief; baby born very calmly at home in his unruptured amniotic sac! Almost so fast the midwives made it with ten minutes to spare. Like some of the others - soon tucked up in bed with partner and older son and a cup of tea. Thank you Brierley midwives - esp Vanessa! Like Anna M's comments about first time being like reading a manual in another language! Good luck with your birth! H
  12. I really empathise with anyone trying to buy around here. We managed to get a shared ownership place about a year ago and I'm so thankful everytime I think about it. We have to rely on one part-time wage (mine ) for various reasons and have two kids (at local schools) so frankly, if we hadn't got the flat when we did we too would have been unable to buy or rent around here and would have been scooting off out of London. Crazy prices .....

  14. With mine sometimes reverse psychology works. So after getting nowhere, saying 'bet you went to the moon' or 'bet you jumped up and down like a gorilla' usually gets a don't be silly, we did....' Somtimes anyway.... When they say nothing's happened I take that as a good thing - means nothing bad's happened.

As usual most things OK in moderation - see here: http://www.earlyinterventionsupport.com/parentingtips/products/walkers.aspx ... Most of them absolutely love the new-found freedom, and as claudineslu said 'the giggling is normally endless'.
  16. we're east side of peckham rye common. And yep - was coming from sky...
  17. Yep - not just you. Heard it too. and agree with your description. H

Bought one of these around 2000 ... in blue... although took a while to pick a colour. and not style over substance either - still have it: is a pretty good turntable... H
  19. One last thing. It's definitely reassuring that most of the local schools are good. Don't underestimate how nice it is to go to a school close to home! Gives community/school cohesion, easier for playdates etc. etc. etc.
  20. Poor thing (and you)! Thought this looked quite good - see link. It goes through all the symptom you mentioned but towards the bottom it talks about how to look out for complications/more serious conditions - e.g. certain number of days fever etc... http://www.askdrsears.com/topics/parenting/childhood-illnesses/coughs-colds-sinus-infections-0
  21. If anyone's still looking the cafe on the Rye had some vouchers .... well hidden just the far side of the till where they keep water jug etc. That was a couple of days ago though. On vouchers restricted view tickets for example with the voucher - ?5 for kids and ?7 for adults. Possibly similar prices to online costs but you can use them at the ticket office and avoid online booking fees. H
  22. I'll come out in agreement with Curmugeon and Otta's comments. I think I'm going to cry. Poor things are only five and childhood's short enough as it is. I'm having the opposite reaction and am frankly sad that my year one has a homework book .. albeit low key homework. Horses for courses I suppose.
  23. Solomon's Passage. All resolved overnight.... Seems like not many affected given the 'quiet' post.
  24. anyone else got no water supply?? ... East side of peckham rye.... Helen
  25. Ah Zippos - what's not to like?? Sometimes a bit of nice-looking totty for the ladeez and gents; pretty good clowns, a bit of 'cheese', the odd well-cared for dog, horse or budgie, some amazing acts, the genuis motorbike guys. AND it doesnt' take itself too seriously! ONLY drawback is that my kids usually nag me into submission and we've got a pile of those LED whirly light things they flog. Perfick. Hope they keep coming back each year...
