Hi there - I think its unreasonable to expect them all to be toilet trained and able to wipe properly at this age.As someone said - they all learn at different speeds and at different ages. I guess it depends how they deal with this all in practice at the school. That said it might not be a good idea to start a child thinking about holing it in. It can quickly become a habit. My son's always been reluctant to poo at school. He sometimes suffers from hard stools and constipation as a consequence - see this snippet from the web here: http://kidshealth.org/parent/emotions/behavior/encopresis.html# 'There's a wide range of normal when it comes to having a BM. The frequency of BMs varies with a person's age and individual nature. "Normal" pooping might range from one or two BMs per day to only three or four per week. Some kids don't poop on a regular basis, but a child who passes a soft BM without difficulty every 3 days is not constipated. However, a child who passes a hard BM (small or large) every other day is. Other kids may go every day, but they only release little, hard balls and there's always poop left behind in the rectum. So, what causes the hard poop in the first place? Any number of things, including diet, illness, decreased fluid intake, fear of the toilet during toilet teaching, or limited access to a toilet or a toilet that's not private (like at school). Some kids may develop chronic constipation after stressful life events such as a divorce or the death of a close relative. Whatever the cause, once a child begins to hold his or her BMs, the poop begins to accumulate in the rectum and may back up into the colon and a vicious cycle begins.'
  4. Night terrors perhaps? Upsetting to witness but child won't usually remember after thankfully. Try here: http://www.bupa.co.uk/individuals/health-information/directory/n/nightmares-and-terrors
  5. HI there giggirl and anyone else interested. I actually went to the park office a couple of days ago - Friday afternoon. Someone else had also enquired the day before. The Mum's there but not paying much attention to the ducklings .. at least during the day.... The keepers know and are keeping an eye on things - esp when some of them go 'free-range' down the stream. H

  7. Hello there- just wondering if 8 and 5-year olds are too old to come along? Helen
  8. Heading out through the Japanese garden past the pond there at around half four this afternoon we noticed a group of about 7 ducklings - not newborn - but not that old or fledged - apparently on their own. They were hopping up form the stream into the main pond. When my partner went back past around half an hour later he said they were still there on their own. Anyone else spotted them? Question is - is there anything that can/should be done? Is it likely they'd be left on their own by their mother for around an hour? Evidently if not then they're going to be on their own at least through the night... Cheers helen

Could be something to do with having more than one child to cater for rather than 'thrusting' them in there lol! Try separating my was 4 now 5-year old from his 8-year old brother for example! Most people monitor and look after the younger ones and keep them on few more suitable areas of the PR one or just on the grassy areas anyway so as to avoid 'restricting' the play of older ones.
  10. Saw a cracker today. Some idiot driving past Harris Boys up towards the traffic lights near Co=op on Forest Hill Road this afternoon. Must have been doing 50 mph. Any speed cameras along there??? If so, hope you got caught mate whoever you are = pretty irresponsible driving.....
  11. The Fourth Trimester theory is quite a nice way of thinking about the early months after birth comparing their environment before and after birth - see attached image. See here: http://babycalm.wordpress.com/2012/07/06/the-fourth-trimester-aka-why-your-newborn-is-only-happy-in-your-arms-30/

  13. Fantastic! Well done everyone involved... and fingers crossed...
  14. Yep - trainlines and bus routes out of London and the tube..... I remember the guy who owns the company recommended above telling us NEVER to sit down on London's public transport - particularly at night time, which, of course, is when the little buggers come and and bite - esp if you've had a few too many to drink and are snoozing merrily away. They can tell you're asleep and are ready to bite.. . We think our bedbug infestation a few years ago now came from my OH's office. He contracts and was sitting next to guy who'd apparently been itching for months and who thought he had a skin condition :,(
  15. WHat about muffins??? For example - chocolate chip. Promise so much - all those chocolatey bits on top and shiny sticky gooey-looking surface. You think - maybe this one will be different, maybe this time it'll be a good'un. Underneath - shitty crumby crumbly stuff that gets EVERYWHERE - guess this pleases passing pigeons - and is usually dried out! Like most cupcakes - style over substance ... discuss...

  17. Agreed - lookin good!
  18. Just flagging up these useful pages from the NHS which include tips for soothing/relaxing babies at bedtime. Worth noting that NHS and others - UNICEF etc recommend that to minimise the risk of SIDS the safest place for a baby to sleep is in the same room as you for the first six months... Opinions vary on whether this should be a cot/moses basket etc. adjacent to your bed ideally and over the risks/benefits of co-sleeping. Obviously there are lots of factors involved here with SIDS but... Anyway the info's here: http://www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/pages/getting-baby-to-sleep.aspx#close H

For a couple of beautiful weeks, when the water feature was just opened and functioning it was lovely! I even almost held a childlike belief that water might actually run uphill and that it would all be OK... almost... Who were the designers/contractors and were they ever held to account for defying commonsense and basic physics? Sorry if this refreshes the pain Molly. I have to say that my kids at least are much happier with the present play area than the previous larger One O Clock club one. H

    Orange

Well - that explains it. Down AGAIN! It's been like this on and off for months. Thanks for the update nunheadmum. I'm on the phone to Orange tomorrow and expect to be fobbed off for a week in the same way, but at least will be registering it like you say. What are you meant to do in the longterm if you don't have a 4G phone - presumably cough up loads of dough for one you wouldn't have needed in the first case if they hadn't taken away masts. Completely predictable! Complete fiasco.

  22. Oh no What happened? I usually walk past there after the school run but we went on the other side of the road today. Feel like forming a human chain round them or is it too late?
  23. Renata - this is a beautiful tree. Thank you for emailing and finding out more. HOWEVER, is it likely that we'll get an answer in time to potentially reprieve it from Tuesday's cull? Given the results so far it looks unlikely. So what else can we practically do to show our unease and concern about the way some of this is being handled in time to actually do something about it? Helen
  24. Oh man! Nits ... clothes moths... chickenpox .... I'm under siege and feeling itchy! Wine needed. :(

    Orange

Darn - sorry to hear others suffering too. Still intermittent today. DJKillaQueen - love to know how you get on. Might be doing the same with Orange... H
