  1. We're considering a skiing holiday next year in the February half-term. None of us - parents included - have ever been skiing before so I wondered if anyone out there had some advice as to the best place to go and/or stay. My children are aged 12 and 15. Apres ski nightlife is not a priority... and yes, I know it's not going to be cheap.
  2. The Search function is not working for me either. I typed "wardrobe" into the search box and clicked the search button. It says the search is running but then comes back with a blank screen with the following URL. http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/search.php?9,search=wardrobe,page=1,match_type=ALL,match_dates=365,match_forum=ALL
  3. Southwark compost costs ?4.50 per 50 litre bag or ?12 for 3. Southwark Garden Waste
  4. How Short...
  5. How Long...
  6. Discussed before fairly recently. See this thread including comment by James Barber.
  7. If you suspect that the socket for the power lead is at fault then http://www.laptoprepair.co.uk/ will repair it for you, or failing that I'm sure they'd be able to diagnose the issue. Why not give them a call to find out the rough cost of a repair.
  8. James can you tell me who is responsible for the maintenance of traffic signal in the borough ? Is it TFL or Southwark ? I have complained to TFL about the traffic signal that filters the traffic right from the Old Kent Rd to Trafalger Avenue on more than one occassion and still nothing has been done. There are supposed to be two lights but one was damaged a while back and has never been repaired/replaced. The other is in a very poor state - the red light doesn't work and the green filter arrow has no shroud and the green glass has slipped so it shows the white light when its supposed to on green. I use this junction regularly as a cyclist but frankly the state of lights is dangerous for all road users. TIA

  10. Has anyone had any experience of these units where you extend your ethernet cabling via your mains cabling ? There are several brands about and for reasons to complex to go into here I'm considering one of these rather than wireless but was interested to hear if anyone else had used one and whether or not they're any good. TIA

  12. The offspring in question is 14 so I think the innocence has worn off. Thanks for your replies so far - anyone else want to add their thoughts ?
  13. It's hard to generalise I know but at what age would you feel comfortable about your son/daughter having a girlfriend/boyfriend ?
  14. Take a look at this thread and this thread.
  15. How do they check if you're using a PAYG Oyster Card ?
  16. So how many of the 10 Post Office Stamps - Classic Albums covers do you have in real life? Me, four, New Order, Coldplay, Clash and Blur.
  17. One important difference between Oyster on trains and Oyster elsewhere is that Southern (not sure about other TOC's) operate a morning (0630-0930) and evening peak (1600-1900) so if you travel into and back from London Bridge between these hours you'll be charged 2 x ?2.10, not ?2.10 + ?1.70. Still as pointed out the ?4.20 total is 10p cheaper than a normal paper return of ?4.30, and each ?2.10 single on the PAYG oyster is 30p cheaper than the ?2.40 paper single.
  18. As only an occassional train user I'm slightly confused about using Oyster when its comes in on Saturday however I have found this information on Southern's website that might be useful to others like me. http://www.southernrailway.com/tickets-and-fares/ticket-types/oyster-card/ http://www.southernrailway.com/download/4313.4/oyster-pay-as-you-go-faqs/

  20. I received this from the Council today - thought I would post it up for all to read, and please don't shoot me I'm just the messenger. Any comments should probably be sent to [email protected] as he authored the below. The refurbishment project is proceeding well and there are a number of exciting developments to report since our last communication in April 2009; 1. Phase 1 works commenced onsite on Tuesday May 5 2009 (on time) and are progressing well. Some of you may have already seen the steel frame being constructed for the new Crystal Palace Road entrance building, giving you a good idea as to where the new entrance will be, and the generously proportioned dance studios at first floor level. The pool hall has had its new, double glazed lantern lights installed along the top of the roof line, allowing vast amounts of natural light to flood into the pool area. 2. Gym facilities will be available throughout the refurbishment works. The refurbishment works are being phased, and the new pool and disability-compliant entrance from Crystal Palace Road will be delivered first. Although your gym and changing facilities will be open as usual, there may be small amounts of disruption from the construction works. We apologise for this inconvenience and will aim to keep disruption to a minimum. In late spring 2010 ? at the end of Phase 1 ? gym facilities will be relocated up to the new first floor dance studios. This will allow the Phase 2 work within the gym hall and current entrance building to get started. 3. Interior design plans are progressing , and we?ve some exciting ideas for the new building. As well as information screens and visual reminders of its Victorian past, Dulwich Leisure Centre will blend in contemporary finishes that you would expect of a 21st Century leisure facility. 4. New Frequently Asked Questions are now available on the Southwark web site (see link route over the page) and additional paper copies are at the Centre. If your question is not answered there, please use the online form and we will respond to you directly. http://www.southwark.gov.uk/YourServices/SportsandLeisure/leisureinvestment/dulwich.html Southwark Council is committed to providing top class swimming and leisure facilities to all residents and users in the borough, and is making this ?5 million investment for the wellbeing of its users now and for years to come. Finally, may I take this opportunity to wish you all a happy and peaceful holiday break. I look forward to bringing you further news about the exciting developments at Dulwich Leisure Centre in the New Year. Yours sincerely, Councillor Lewis Robinson Executive Member for Culture, Leisure & Sports 4th Floor North Southwark Council PO Box 64529 London SE1P 5LX Office Tel: 020 7525 7159 [email protected]
  21. I've stayed http://www.folkemanorholidays.co.uk/accommodation-cottage.html here a couple of times. It's a bit off the beaten track but handy for when I want to visit my Mum who lives in a nearby village and can't put us up. The accomodation was comfortable and well equipped. It's also fairly new - I think the owners built the accomodation in the last 4 years or so. The owners are very friendly and helpful, they do B&B as well. Sherborne is close by which has its historic castle and abbey and is home to quite a well-to-do population. Plenty of pubs in the environs my recommendations would be the Fox at Evershot and the Helyar Arms in East Coker. Thirty minutes or so to the nearest coast.
  22. Discussed here a while back.
  23. This would seem like a prime candidate for the council's "Cleaner, Greener, Safer" funding scheme, however the scheme is operated at Community Council level and the majority of Greendale falls outside of the Dulwich Community Council area - see the red and black line on the attached map which marks the boundary. Once you're over the railway bridge it's Camberbell and suggestions to the CGS scheme are only allowed from people within the Community Council of the area affected. This is somewhat annoying as I suspect a lot of the users and potential users of Greendale are from the Dulwich Community Council area. If anyone know of someone in the Camberwell area that would be willing to sponser an application then futher details of the application process can be found here.
  24. My advice is to check out the charges. Ebay nows takes a whopping 10% of the final value of the item and a fee to list the item in the first place, though this is usually quite small. If you have a lot of stuff to sell then you'll probably need a Paypal account too as this makes it easier and quicker to receive the payment, however, Paypal (owned by ebay) also takes a turn so if your expecting to be paid ?10 for something you might end up with ?9.70. Lastly once you've got the money in your Paypal account, unless you're going to spending buy more stuff on ebay (or the handful of other retailers that take paypal) you'll be wanting to transfer into your bank account. Again if its less than ?50 PP take another charge... Having said all that, I've successfully bought and sold lots of stuff on ebay without any real problems. It takes a bit of getting used to and might seem a bit time consuming at first. Spend time on good photos and accurate descriptions and send the stuff as quickly as possible and you'll do just fine.
