  1. The question wasn't whether it was a good business idea or not. It was how do we feel about one opening on Lordship Lane, Norcross Rd etc. Forget all this nonsense of artistic and creative types, getting inked and tatted. Tattoo parlors are tacky, often found in areas with payday loans shops.
  2. The idea is a bit...how shall we say...Peckham
  3. Prefer Lyle's Golden Syrup myself
  4. "I think we can be quite clear what 'ponces at the Victoria' meant....It was meant as a dig at the owners of the Victoria..." DJKQ, I have no idea where the Victoria pub is (back street pub in Nunhead?) nor who the owners are. However, assuming you are correct that it was a derogatory term, presumably it is accurate?
  5. Jonnie has not only lost his marbles he's lost his girl as well
  6. Foie Gras with roast goose is yummy
  7. Are Catholics not part of the community in ED?
  8. This race should be banned as it will upset all those worried about increased car use/reckless parking on Etherow Street outside St Anthony's School.
  9. Now ?100 each Otta. Better hurry, StraferJack's just run off with a gross.
  10. For sale - pristine copies of final edition of News of the World. Highly sought after collector's item. ?50 each.
  11. But that's not what this whole thing is about is it? Hacking is naughty, of course, and people will go to prison over this. It's old scores being settled, the Guardian fighting for it's very survival as it ceases printing newspapers and moves online (and presumably starts charging to view). Why do you think the BBC has given this 24-hour wall to wall coverage? Because of the threat a unified BSkyB poses to it of course. I'm not denying this raises some fundamental questions of the abuse of power, relations with the establishment and the police, the role of a free press in society etc. My point is the outraged masses calling for boycotts of the Murdoch press are unwitting pawns in the political games being played out by more sinister forces.
  12. In 2006, the information commissioner reported newspapers had used Stephen Whittamore, a private detective, to obtain information in breach of data protection law. Whittamore was used by many papers, not just News of the World. Listed here are the number of ?transactions positively identified? by the commissioner and (in brackets) the number of journalists at each title involved: Daily Mail 952 (58) Sunday People 802 (50) Daily Mirror 681 (45) Mail on Sunday 266 (33) News of World 228 (23) Sunday Mirror 143 (25) Evening Standard 130 (1) The Observer 103 (4) Daily Express 36 (7) The Sun 24 (4) The Sunday Times 4 (1) The Times 2 (1) http://www.thesundaytimes.co.uk/sto/news/focus/article667055.ece#next
  13. "..NOTW interfered with a murder enquiry, deleting phone messages and potentially destroying evidence..." It is alleged the private investigator did this, not the NoW. If you're one of the many on the anti-Murdoch gravy train please check facts.
  14. "...this whole hacking thing has been ludicrously overblown..." Matthew Parris http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/opinion/columnists/matthewparris/article3088836.ece Hear hear - a voice of reason at last amidst the Facebook/Twitter lynch mob generation
  15. Are you alleging, curtain twitcher, that the NoW has placed Spycatcher-like surveillance devices in Nos 11 and 15? I think Max Clifford should be told so they can join the (very) long queue of those hoping to line their pockets.
  16. Sorry Pafio, explain that to me again? As I understand it Mandarin is the official language of China, in a country with hundreds of different dialects. To have multiple variations of a language where different provinces can't understand each other is difficult for me. I suppose, for me, it's like being in converastion with some Glaswegians or Geordies, even though they're speaking the same language.
  17. JDR, St Anthony's School is over subscribed by 3.5 to 1. That means many Catholics cannot get their children into that school. Explain to me how your friend (no mention of wife's/partner's affiliation) has been discriminimated against in a way that the other 2.5 (ratio) applicants who were rejected haven't been. Same question to BarryBarry whose inaugural post wasn't as innocent as some would like to think
  18. Sad to see the last Shuttle mission launching today. Budget cuts, yes. Russians to supply the International space station for the next two, if not three years. Unthinkable a few years ago. The first black president has inherited a poisonous chalice. Spend billions on space or on welfare? Keep being the protector of the free world or withdraw into isolationalism? The world is sitting on a fulcrum. Don't delude yourself that China will ride to the rescue. The future prosperity of the world hangs in the balance

    Eurozone

Don't be fooled folks - the Euro is far from dead and may well come out of this stronger. It's almost as if it's been engineered. Greece, Ireland and Portugal are now slaves to the Eurozone for generations to come even if they default and leave the Euro (but not necessarily the EU). Who else will lend them money? The Eurozone will become more powerful with europe-wide economic and fiscal policy.
  20. Maybe kellygirl kept her promise Posted by: kellygirl May 08, 09:44PM if that gym is open by july i'll drink the pool...
  21. Re: Sterilisation Posted by: Huguenot Yesterday, 05:16AM 'But we do abort fetuses because they have genetic disorders'. Apart from the spelling error, no 'we' don't. 'we' don't have a say in the matter at all. WRONG - spelling perfectly acceptable as American English and naive to deny the obvious - wrong thread to discuss this though
  22. Drxyster Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- >... Surely this is the crux of the dilemma - 'would you recommend...'? What right does anyone have to pass judgement on another? I pay for her/his (insert whinge) through my taxes therefore she/he cannot do x, y, z Dangerous road to go down folks
  23. Being too polite to people in debates, especially when they resort to swearing/insults as a last resort
  24. Depends what you mean by nutters If nutters are people you disagree with you may have to ask yourself who the real nutter is.
  25. Rape is horrendous and despicable. However there are degrees of rape in law, as Clarke was trying to explain with his legal distinction. The problem with rape before the courts is it's very easy to assert, to make the accusation. A bit like accusing someone of racism from the accusation point of view. Such accusations invite much Ill-informed and unjustified criticism and offence. Such issues are better left to the courts to determine.
