  1. I rang nationwide for the first time the other day and a human answered the phone without any options. It caught me completly unaware and unprepared

I think tidal is a great option but you do need a variety of renewable energy sources. Nuclear I am not so sure on, we do not have our own supply of uranium so can?t be confident of security as per the situation with Russian gas and of course it is not renewable.
  3. So building a tidal barrier out millions of tonnes concrete or mining, processing and transporting uranium from Australia has no carbon footprint?
  4. Does the loss of energy and inefficiency matter? Now using a coal power stations energy just to pump water up hill over night is a waste considering coal is about 30% at most efficient. Using the variable output from a completely new renewable energy national grid just to top up reservoirs around the country would store lots of potential energy and be carbon free ? who cares about the losses. The problem with renewable energy sources apart from wave and hydro-thermal is that the output is variable you need away of storing the energy. Considering we are about to go for carbon capture which makes coal plants even less efficient so the losses with what I suggest will be irrelevant considering there is no CO2 produced.
  5. The trouble with windfarms is what everybody quite rightly says, there is no electricity without wind, you need to be able to store the energy from times of plenty?but there is a way of storing it. You use the variable energy from windfarms or solar panels etcetera to pump water up hill into a reservoir storing all that potential energy to be released controllably through hydroelectric generators to provide a consistent power source to be connected to the national grid. Instead of the Dinorwig hydroelectric power station in Wales using spare electricity from the national gird to recharge its reservoir this could be done using a separate renewable energy gird. Piece of p?ss!
  6. I read another windfarm has been thrown out in Oxford by the local NIMBY councillors as it ruined the residents view. I wonder what their position will be when Bangladesh is under the sea and a few million refugees will be on their doorstep?
  7. If you're in your house can't you use the landline?
  8. Underpinning is bad news for Victorian terraces. I?ve seen an example where a particular property was substantially underpinned and the two adjoining property were not. As the foundations are usually just spread foot on to the underlying clay in London they would naturally move throughout the year with the moisture content of the clay. As the middle property was underpinned and rigid the two adjoining properties suffered as they moved relative to the clay and the middle property did not. So the moral of the story is be careful buying a terrace which is next to a house that has been underpinned.
  9. If you manage Brockley can you turn the PA up as no one can hear it

  12. The company I work for issues health and safety information sheets (they?re American). As one of our p[ssed up colleagues fell down the escalators on the tube we were all issued a 3 page double sided A4 information sheet on how to use escalators safely. If three pages weren?t enough at the end there were around five links to websites with further information! I'm with you on that ????.
  13. Just closed my British gas accounts and strangely enough the ?200 odd of credit we had on them has disappeared when I checked online. I?m looking forward to that phone call already?joy
  14. Do you have a dog? My one pees in the same place mostly so we have a few dead patchs. I just buy a roll of turf and and cut out the dead patch replacing it with new turf.
  15. Yeah its rubbish isn't it. I always find that a good hangover reduces the symptoms.
  16. A thing that gets on my tits are people who think they are not littering as they have put their rubbish on top of a post box or cabinet in the street. Where do you think its going to go? Actually while we're at it, another pet hate is people who put water into an empty bottle of washing liquid or soap to make it last longer. FFS

We could do what we used do at school when we spotted a pair of half-masts on a gangly teenager by standing to attention and saluting. Or is that too childish?
  18. We have plenty of bank holidays this time of year. What we need is one between August and Christmas to break that old slog of the days getting shorter and the weather getting worse

It is that time of year when the occurrences of rear-end-shunts increases dramatically! I do prefer the Profanisaurus descriptive of this type of collision?.but I couldn?t state it here.

I?ll try and come along?saying that moving has been expensive this month and I?ve held off paying that solicitors bill long enough. Maybe next month, is it a regular thing?
  22. How would a newbie recognise you lot then? ps where is EDT?
  23. So where did all the money go? The amount money in circulation has not decreased, if the banks lost it someone or some institution must have it ? or is that too simplistic? Is all this ?lost? money sitting in savings accounts in China?
