  1. I have no idea what the area looks like now, not been passing that way for a number of years. But there was a great fish and chip shop at the bottom of the hill and a kerosine dispenser, which if you were lucky gave a reasonable return if someone had broken the glass. But that was 40 plus years ago.

My wife is Canadian and there is a place in Winnipeg based in an old Canadian Pacific railroad carriage which does sweets from bygone days, but they have never had Spanish Gold whenever we have been in there. I have to send out Galaxy bars on a regular basis as it is!! When she gets back in August she will be impressed. Thanks for the link.

  5. Sweet Tobacco, it was coconut dusted with chocolate powder, I think it was called Spanish Gold.... and you can still order it from a specialist supplier!
  6. I have an almost pathological dislike for PC. It is too late to bring back the Golliwog as well as the Robertson brand of jam is no more I understand. Oh well!!!

As long as my Mojo was still appealing. You know, I used to go into the shop on Pytchley Road, get 8 Black Jacks, 8 Mojos and the Look and Learn and still have change out of a bob.

  11. I remember when Jubbly's were a triangular shaped frozen orange drink! Piece of trivia...first item to be barcoded in the UK, was Wrigley gum!!

Thankfully the Military holds itself to a higher standard than the bottom feeders we have in Parliament.
  13. Kentucky Fried Chicken Is Owned by the KKK! "Fast food chains seem to get a lot of bizzarre theories attached to them. For instance, it?s long been claimed that Domino?s Pizza supports an anti-abortion group, and that Fanta was invented by the Nazis. But the story about KFC takes this brand of urban legend to a new level, probably because of the sleek Southern gentility of its spokesperson, the ?Colonel? Sanders. Legend has it that Colonel Sanders wrote a will that went into effect after his death in 1980, and that one of the clauses in this document was a demand that 10% of KFC?s profits be turned over to the Ku Klux Klan. Others go right to the source, and claim that the current owners of KFC are a secret front for the Klan itself, and so that (largely defunct) racist organization gets a majority share of the profits. The truth is that KFC is owned by the Yum! Corporation, which also owns such brands as Pizza Hut, Long John Silvers, and A&W. If they are a front group for the KKK, then they have a lot of people fooled!" And A&W make the best hamburger in the world, just saying!

Erh no, I would caution against certain areas still, but it is a diminishing list of places I would say.
  20. Try the Time and Life Archives online. Photographers like Alfred Eisenstadt (sp) spring to mind.

Oh, you would be surprised at how low they got, on both sides of the divide, seriously. But it was Big Boys Games and Big Boys Rules, I am afraid. It is great to go to places I could not have set foot in whilst in uniform and have a pint with the locals. I really enjoy visiting both Northern Ireland and the South these days, they are a marvellously welcoming people.
  22. Peace in our time! 4 tours and this still makes my teeth grit, but I have say I prefer not to see British citizens being slaughtered anymore and if that means a deal with the Devil so be it. It was a dirty, nasty war and we are well rid of it.

It worked for me with the wife.
