Just a historical point here but. Neither Hitler, Stalin nor Ceaucescu were influenced by the Catholic Church. In fact they all opposed the church in their different ways. The Bolshevik Revolution happened in Russia long before Germany or Romania came under its sway. I do get the point you are trying to make though.
  2. You should see it MP. It is quite possibly Film?s greatest moment. Forget the girl in the red dress in Schindler?s Lists, Lawrence of Arabia stumbling out of the desert or the battle of Helm?s Deep. Watching something that countless young boys have done with a GI Joe and a stolen Barbie doll played out on celluloid is an experience you will never forget.
  3. Was he in military fatigues and on his way to make a hapless attempt at setting up a road-block between East Dulwich and Camberwell?
  4. Coming again, to save the motherfucking day yeah.
  5. Oh. In that case I think the answer definitely is Jack Daniels. If only Plato had known about it.
  6. Any recommendations? I?m looking for a decent pub to spend a few hours in before a gig on Sunday evening?
  7. I would advocate starting in the CPT and then heading to the Drum at closing. I also don?t mind the Bishop but it does get really busy and it sometimes feels a bit too ?cool? for me.
  8. So what's the question then?
  9. The job I have at the moment is the most boring soul destroying job I have ever done. Mostly because it is for an employer that seems to only promote apathy and mediocrity. I much preferred being a barman even though this is by far better paid with better hours.
  10. What about Plough Lane or Donkey Alley? They?re both pretty small and obscure.
  11. I see the Bishop and the CPT are neck and neck with the EDT and Green & Blue also in the running. Quite an eclectic mix there. When does the voting close Admin?
  12. I think you may have something there Keef. Comic Book Guy http://www.24-7simpsons.com/comic%20book%20guy%201.jpg Michael Moore http://www.thewashingtonnote.com/archives/michael%20moore.jpg
  13. Nah. He was in Black Sabbath not the Pretenders.

That is what I have always felt. I have always worn a poppy on Remembrance Day for the reason my uncle, an Irishman who was in one of the South African regiments that fought for the allies in the Second World War, explained to me: ?So that we remember NEVER to let anything like that happen again.? I give reserved support to the Legion because I do feel that a society has a responsibility to its service men but I also feel that that responsibility extends to the Government and the Military. It includes them not over-recruiting and under supplying to support pointless wars and neglecting their duty of care.
  15. Exactly why I said "as far as it is possible to feel sorry for him" Of course schadenfreude may also be appropriate.
  16. Hmmmm. This explains why half of Westminster was cordoned off and crawling with cops when I went out for lunch. You have to feel sorry for Brown, well as far as it is possible to feel sorry for him. His predecessor did leave a lot of right royal cock ups behind for him to deal with.

But I quickly learnt that I much preferred it with Coke or at least ice. That way I didn't have to struggle not to pull a face after each swig.
  18. The Plough is a very good pub, newly refurbished and most seem to agree it has turned out well.
  19. Yeah! That article upset me a fair bit. I had to bung the washing in the tumble-dryer and go for a nice relaxing drive.
  20. No no. Irish Prison Service. They used to get Samhain off until one year there was some unpleasantness and a fire in Mountjoy Prison. It?s a union issue now.
  21. ha ha. IPS that is.
  22. The church actually moved all Saints Day sometime in the Middle Ages to coincide with the pagan autumn festivals which in their various forms gave rise to what we now know as Halloween. Although Bonfire Night in England and the old colonies is celebrated very specifically to commemorate the gunpowder plot its traditions of burning guys etc are routed in the same autumn festival traditions. Easter and Christmas also coincide with older pagan traditions.
  23. Here from where? It is a Celtic holiday so therefore has its origins firmly routed in these islands. Pumpkins, commerce and trick or treating are New World imports though.
  24. Yes.
  25. So they're playing football in a soccer stadium. ;-)
