Too often people say all politicians are the same. No, they're not all the same

Should Rachel Reeves consider a tax on overseas remittances?
Jenijenjen replied to vladi's topic in The Lounge
"This lack of transparency means the scale of dirty money entering the UK is unknown, but experts estimate that it is in excess of tens of billions of pounds every year, aided by a network of bankers, lawyers, and accountants, who face few consequences." https://www.transparency.org.uk/what-we-do/corruption-and-uk/stop-flow-dirty-money -
Should Rachel Reeves consider a tax on overseas remittances?
Jenijenjen replied to vladi's topic in The Lounge
If this is true, they would have channels that would avoid any tax. Besides, I think proceeds of crime are more likely to flow into the UK -
Not the only one these days

From the October 2025 edition of the Dulwich Society e-news: "The Paxton pub at Gipsy Hill is being refurbed by Greene King and will reopen as a music and restaurant venue called the House of Mobo."

I have no problem with it. Don't understand why civil liberties groups are against it and why there has been so much historic resistance to the introduction of ID cards. We already have passports, surely not so very different?
-
@Spartacus It seems a very complex subject and I have no knowledge of the places awarded money but pride of place has many more ingredients than retail.

This is not what I am referring to as imaginary, more that to reverse this trend shoppers would be prepared to go back to high street shopping - To pay more - Endure the irritation, inconvenience and time spent real life shopping - and to have far, far far less choice. To shop in bricks and mortar shops means the shopkeeper is to a certain extent making preliminary choices for us. As I said before, the genie is out of the bottle.
-
I'm not going to answer a hypothetical question about an imaginary outcome.

It is not laziness that sends me shopping on the Internet, it's also the better choice, better prices, and also the availability of items impossible to obtain either locally or in central London. I try to avoid Amazon for both ethical and quality issues. The internet has enabled many small businesses to trade which would not have been possible before, surely that's a good thing. The genie is well out of the bottle.

Sadiq Khan has indeed responded calling Trump "racist, sexist, misogynistic and islamophobic." https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cre53qn8v07o So agree @Sue every time Trump opens his mouth. torrents of ignorance spew out.
-
Regarding your second sentence, I tend to vaguely agree with him but for very, very different reasons, one of many being his toxic influence wafting over the Atlantic.

Perhaps responses are made by DM?

Definitely this. I'm really quite shocked at my naivety when I look back. As for feeling safe in central London, after many, many years of working there and thriving, I don't feel quite so safe now. I think though that spending a lot more time in the relative peace of East Dulwich since retiring, the noise and speed of everything in central London has become a shock to the system and I'm disoriented. More so north of the river.

There was a previous thread about them about 6 months ago. Since then, they have been found guilty and fined for illegal street trading and collections in June in the City of London. https://news.cityoflondon.gov.uk/we-r-blighty-pleads-guilty-of-illegal-street-trading-and-collections-in-the-city/

To put this over dramatic and somewhat gleeful post in context, the policy has not "failed at first hurdle." "It is just a temporary decision. The judge granted a pause of at least 14 days so the man, who is not being named for legal reasons and arrived in the UK on a small boat last month, could provide evidence of his claim that he has been a victim of modern day slavery." from BBC website

Injured fox on Crawthew Grove
Jenijenjen replied to EDmummy101's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
Just seen the limping fox in my garden in North Cross Road. Didn't stay for long but looks alert, curious, lively, in good condition, apart from limp very healthy. Of course, having the an injured limb is not ideal but I wonder if stressing him/her by trying to catch it, which will be very difficult, is the best course of action. Edited to add could see no sign of infection, leg looked withered more than injured, maybe a birth defect? I don't know. Any way, is using his other rear leg well enough to rest his front legs on the window sill and peer inside my kitchen. -
I posted about this many years ago, how it was all smiles and thank yous if you bought a book for 50p (it was a long time ago) yet if you donated goods that might raise £50 there was just a grumpy "leave it there." Happy to say I've found things have improved a lot.

Made me laugh, not in a good way, to learn Nadine Dorries, his no 1 groupie, is trying to pave his way into Reform.
-
I'd really like to see him receive his comeuppance but no matter how damning the evidence, I'm very cynical he'll receive any appropriate punitive measure that will hurt or cause him shame.

Maybe it was Howard Hughes

There was me overcome with memories of articles in women's magazines from the 1950s advising their readers how to be a good housewife and thinking it's like feminism never happened. Until I read the last paragraph. Be warned, this is PR from someone who runs a cleaning company.

Crikey! This Doesn't Look Good For The Housing Secretary
Jenijenjen replied to David Peckham's topic in The Lounge
The discussion has been about the silence from certain posters about Truss's disastrous actions. Your 'gotcha' is merely a deflection.
