I do recall a tale about how someone on his travels was raving about marmite's prophylactic properties against mosquito bites; the next day he found a Danish chap having helped himself to his marmite, spreading it on his ankles, obviously refusing to believe that anybody would actually eat the stuff!!

Something about the smell as it seeps out your pores, keeps them away apparently.

"Some suggest that the consumption of Marmite can ward off mosquitos[9], the reasoning being that the skin gives off a scent, unnoticeable to humans, but which mosquitoes find unappealing, or that the vitamin B content wards off the flying pests. British travellers to tropical locations sometimes take Marmite with them to eat during the trip, although it has been shown that the B vitamin complex does not repel mosquitoes.[10]" [wikipedia]

  • 5 months later...
My dog loves marmite on toast - at weekends he get 4 slices in the morning as a treat. I love Marmite, so much so I could eat it with a spoon! My partner who is of Guyanese origin hates it, as did my ex who was foreign! So agree with CWALD - must be an English thing. Although my dog is French....

The Guinness Marmite is only sold by Waitrose (and thus Ocado). Its origin was accidental really. The yeast is supplied to the Unilever (the makers) by particular breweries and from particular beers. A while ago the usual breweries could not supply the required yeast so Unilever turned to Guinness yeast. It does make a difference so it was marketed as such. It is more runny and different flavour than the usual stuff but is lovely. It was only meant to be temporary but was continued due to demand.

The new version 'with champagne' is again a different flavour but is as firm as the usual stuff. I got mine from Sainsburys but I think it is widely available.

    • There seems to be a change in the reception staff - did not recognise a couple of them when I last visited.  Not sure whether one of the long term staff has retired as not seen her for a while.  Used on line facility as my podiatrist recommended antibiotics for a toe infection and also took photo of my toe which I attached yo my request. Got a message back within a day to say medication ordered from chemist.

    • Oh give it a break.  We have an MP who makes racist comments, yet our media (and what seems like this Forum) that generally hate Labour (and loved Johnson) are just out looking for the dirt. It's a move on, nothing to see here.  Particularly if she used a letting agency.
