Wondered if anybody had any info about what, if anything is going to replace the Thai Pavillion restaurant which seems to have been closed down for over a year now. We are interested in a property adjacent and are trying to find out if there is any danger of the site being turned in a noisy bar with a late licence or some other residential nightmare. Or if anybody knows how you can find out from the council whether there are any restrictions on what the site can or can't be used for...

Any info gratefully received!

Go and ask at the planning office - they will be able to tell you. If it were to be turned into a bar then aplications for licences and for change of use would be required and you would have the right to oppose. Your views would be taken into consideration.

The old licence details can be found here - I think it provides for alcohol to be served with food, so a bar couldn't operate on that type of licence and would have to apply for it to be changed.

The planning application 08/AP/0579 granted here http://planningonline.southwarksites.com/planningonline2/AcolNetCGI.exe?ACTION=UNWRAP&RIPNAME=Root.PgeResultDetail&TheSystemkey=9527944 is stated to be conditional upon development being started within three years of the date of decision, 10/06/2008.
sema thai is awful, the decor before refurb was better and the food and service leave a lot to be desired - i think it's the only restaurant i would avoid on lordship lane! there is a great thai place in crystal palace (i forget the name) but wish there was one in dulwich somewhere. thai pavillion was a really nice place, great food even if the seats were a bit uncomfortable.

Neither Thai corner or Sema are anything special IMO, just run-of-the-mill suburban Thai restaurants. Something to soak up the beer, that tastes OK.

I really don't understand why restaurants settle for mediocrity when they could do so much better. The staff are Thai, they must know that the food they're serving isn't the real deal.

Tamnag Thai is really good, I agree. Liking the up-turned parasols on the ceiling too... though I hope they've been treated with fire retardant - some of those dishes they set fire to can burn quite fiercely... I almost want to pull out my hose when that happens.

Out of interest, does anyone know why Thai Pavillion closed down? It was popular (but not cheap) when I moved into this area in the early '90's. Thai Cafe opened ,I think mid, '90's and has been popular since but to my knowledge has not changed it's menu since.

I like Thai Cafe. You get what you pay for and BYO does help keep the price down. I wonder if it's popularity led to the demise of Thai Pavillion?

I have eaten at all the Thai restaurants in the area, by far the best is Lombok in Herne Hill, exceptional thai cuisine....cheap and cheerful BYO Thai Corner.

If your in SoHo Busabai Eathai on Wardour Street.

Stoke Newington....for Yum Yums.

I travelled Thailand, i promise you won't be dissapointed with my recommendations

    • the same complaint was made about usa news stations 4 years ago.  its an old story. Its quite shocking how intelligent people are so easily manipulated. I
    • With slightly less respect Headnun I have  watched the 1 hour video - he said what he said and he did what he did. And his faux-wink wink “no violence people” fools no one but fools. Are you a fool?    the bbc told the truth - and it’s a straight up lie to say otherwise. Did they edit and cut to the chase to make a point? Absolutely  and correctly  he was not edited to say things he didn’t say  I cannot believe you watched the entire video and are trying to say the bbc edit somehow misrepresented what he said and Back in the real world - did the nutters who showed up at the white house materialise because of a bbc edit ffs - have some self respect and recognise what’s going on
    • Friends and family in the 'States always say how wonderful it is to be in Britain and see our news coverage.  It's all partisan out there. The BBC manages to simultaneously p off the left and the right so must be doing something right.
    • From the BBC: "The conclusion of that deliberation is that we accept that the way the speech was edited did give the impression of a direct call for violent action. The BBC would like to apologise for that error of judgement." What is wrong is editing someone to make him say something they didn't.  With respect Sephiroth, this is something I know a bit about and I have encountered, over the last decade, people in programming editing contributors to make them say things they didn't, the end point being to hang them out to dry. It's happening more and more and it's my job to make sure that people on TV are not mis-represented, but shown in their true light so that viewers can make up their own minds. You have no idea what goes on behind the scenes and how hard some us fight to keep things impartial.  It's also worth mentioning that I have personally lost work because of Trump suing US networks, and that's one of the lesser reasons why I'd like to see him gone.  But broadcasters have a moral obligation to tell the truth and that's the hill that most decent professionals in the industry are willing to die on. Otherwise, how can the viewing public trust anything that's beamed into their living rooms?
