While driving about town, I surf the various radio stations for the the best tunes at that time.

My 3 year old shows a strong preference for Capital. I was always only mildly concerned by this.

But...... today she has started singing that foul, but catchy Rhianna song to herself, which goes along the lines of "come here rude boy, can you get it up".

It's wrong, wrong, wrong. Surely one shouldn't need to censor daytime radio stations from children on the basis of song lyrics!?

I think radio station go on the assumption a child wouldnt understand the meaning of the lyrics. Things like this a very common on all radio stations these days. But if my child started singing that... Oh my, I dont know what i'd do. Ban her from the radio!!! Have her acquire a taste for radio 4 maybe?

The other favourite is the (I think) Usher song that goes "baby got a bootie like pow pow pow". She's intrigued by that, and keeps asking me why he is allowed to say 'pow pow' when they get told off at school for saying it.

Nothing escapes young ears and curious minds. I think you're right GinaG3, Radio 4 it is from now on. I may need to figure out how to programme it in.

The songs on Absolute have a few interesting lyrics (like the one to which you refer, jalapeno), but the tunes are not as catchy as the R&B and pop on capital, which seems to draw the little ones right in.

Rhianna is my new nemesis. She also sings that 'pull the trigger song'. She's a spooky lady who should come with a PG rating.

Oh dooon't!! Our builders have been listening to a combination of magic and radio 2 all week (sorry, silvester rd!) and it's awful!!!

Funny what these little ones pick up on isn't it. I have radio 1 on all day when I'm home (habit) but I couldn't tell you a single lyric/song title.....

We used to listen to Magic, but to be honest I was starting to find it embarrasing that my son could sing the lyrics to Mrs Robinson, that's not a sign of a "cool" Mummy now is it?! Our builders listen to Absolute, not a bad station, although now both children spend the day singing an ad:

Daughter... "dot com".

It's a bit boring but it'll keep your little one's ears from being contaminated. I think your kids are forgiven Pickle given my circumstances - this is my hubby's theme tune at the moment ("we buy any car - argh!!") and he seems to derive pleasure from knowing I hate it!

It is tricky i remember trying to suggest the lyrics to kings of Leons sex on fire was actually Sax on fire (it was so prolific last year on various radio stations and of course during the x factor auditions it seemed rather unavoidable ). !sadly my daughter wasnt impressed and gave me a rather despairing look whilst telling me she did relise that adults sometimes use words that children shouldnt !

I actually had much more of a problem with Radio 4 I banned in in my house and car after my daughter who was then aged 5 asked me about what exactly was a suicide bomber and a further attempt to listen to it in the car when there some discussion about rape as a weapon in war. Really not appropriate in my view

There's a pair of comedians (Cardinal Burns) who do a skit as turkish cab drivers where they sing a song to the Kings of Leon song, only it's changed to "My tax disc's expired" - maybe could persuade kids that's what their saying (sing it over the top of the actual tune and it fits perfectly!).

@Keef - the episode of Friends where Ross and Rachel sing that to baby Emma was on again the other day - do think it could add something to the Bare Groove set list!! :))

My 6 and 3 year olds are maybe a bit unsophisticated, but they are quite happy that Kings of Leon sing 'Socks on Fire'. I listen to Heart Fm in the car, their daddy likes Xfm, and so far have had no problem with lyrics.they like we buy any car too, and also Go Compare ad with an opera singer in though. I remember desperately trying to talk over my Prince cassette back when a teenager so my Mum would not pick up on the lyrics in some of those songs! I am so uncool now I do not even know those Rihanna songs. I'll stick to Heart-plenty of Michael Buble and Abba!!

I think I am going to have to stop listening to Radio 4 because although my 3 1/2 year old had a good grasp of the election ,and for a time wanted to call our new baby Nick Clegg (it's going to be a girl!), she is starting to understand the news and every mealtime now is piping up with 'who's dead now Mummy?'. I think it's a bit early for such a pessimistic view of the world!
