Just like another all purpose Englis word. "This f******, f***** is f*****. F*** it", often used when the video fails to work.

boom boom scor46

Obviously this is about the incident rather than the video shop and I hope no-one got injured. But I think the concept oof such a store existing in 5 years time, regardless of what it is called, is very remote. Hard media (be it Ble Ray or HDDVD) will be dirt cheap to buy while casusal viewing will be streamed. Rents will make shops like this redundant I believe

Hi,

I'm a long time forum observer, and first time poster.

I walked into the video store today just after 2pm to print something. The shop assistant was on the phone. When she put down the receiver to serve me I noticed she had been crying. I immediately assumed she'd been dumped by her boyfriend, and not wanting to pry, I didn't ask her if anything was wrong. With her blotchy red face and holding back tears she talked me through the costs of printing and what to do to log on to a terminal. I sat down and then a minute later half a dozen police arrived. Apparently moments earlier a guy had come in with a gun and held up the young attendant. There were about a dozen other people at the computer terminals and not one noticed him. He must have held her up very quietly.

Surely the most stupid criminals were the teenagers who robbed the Co-Op on Forest Hill Road , their local convencience store at the end of their road. They were found really easily by the police with thousands of quid in their bedrooms. The dangerous thing is that they had live weapons. Young, stupid and armed. Nero

The video shop is now called Prime Time before it was Filmnight for a short while and before that Apollo. What has happened to the Apollo chain? One across from Brockwell Park has closed down too.

Anyway, the police caught the 17 year old lad with the takings (?70) and he had a real gun.

What a plonker

Apart from the fact that he thinks it makes him ?hard? I seriously doubt that the kid would have ever been taught how to use a gun properly. Just lucky he didn?t accidentally kill someone or himself.

My mate was working at the betting shop across from the uplands a couple of months ago when they got held up in there at gunpoint.

William Hill opposite the Plough DIY on LL was held up by kids with guns a couple of months ago. They robbed the customers and the cashiers.

Nowadays if I get cut up by a youth pushing out db's in a Fiat punto I think twice before stopping my car and hurling abuse.

I'm now beginning to think it's safer in Jo'burg.

Lozzyloz I've had a gun pulled on me twice driving in Jo'burg*. Not yet in London thankfully. I still feel kinda safer here. Not seen any shoot-outs in shopping centres in London yet either.

*Well technically once in Edenvale and once in Boksburg for those who know the local geography.

The only gun issues I had in SA were with the idiots carrying them for self defence (allegedly) who mostly shoot themselves or friends by accident! I was threatened with a gun in North London 15 years ago but those were different times. Nowadays a gun seems to be used all too indiscriminately by an element of youth that are unpredictable and play by different rules than you and I. In SA you more or less knew where you were likely to get held up and could at least take some preventative action like not stopping at robots. Now it seems renting a DVD (or video) is on the list of hazhards.

"robots" :)) Not heard that in a while loz.

You are correct though. Both times I had guns pulled on me it was not to rob me. The one was some drunk aggressive cunt and the other was an aggressive taxi driver who took offence to me taking offence to him driving like a cunt.

    • As I age, I understand a lot more about community spirit and people’s fear in the current climate of going to the assistance of a person in need. Yes, this might in part be aged related but is also driven by not wishing or wanting to help but a combination of self preservation and yes, fear of what the attacker might do or even worse get stabbed or physically assaulted.  Whilst it would be great to have more police presence to reassure community and hopefully act as a deterrent to people whose aim is to rob people or home and attack people, due to the cutbacks and not sure about my next comment but lack of police officers in general and reduce number of recruits, let’s face it - we as a community should step up to protect our community and assist police. Years ago, I attended one of these evening meeting with the local police officers - turn out was less than a dozen local residents. Yes, was in the evening when a lot of families were dealing with homework, feeding, after school activities and obviously there are housebound people and older members of the community who understandably would not wish to come out. I believe that to address this, the church at the top of Barry Road near the library have over the last couple of years advertised  and organised day time meeting with two local police officers responsible for the area to address issues concerning the local community. What  happened in daylight might as mentioned above been in part caused by an individual with possible mental health problems - the point is we should all feel safe on our streets in London and without doubt if you read the news, seems like stabbing, assault is now just the norm - a reflection of modern day society in any large town in the UK. If memory serves me correctly, not related to assault but was not someone stabbed a couple of years ago near the junction with the organic shop? And I believe mentioned recently someone died in the local community from an assault. Would be good to have an update from the police or someone known to the individual attacked.  I was in East Dulwich just last week talking to a friend in Barry Road and was surprised to see two bobbies walking along the road in broad daylight so now having heard about the assault can only assume police presence has been increased.
    • Disagree. Where are the police when you need them? People want a police presence, they want to feel reassured by seeing them do what the word suggests, policing, so go catch some bad guys, arrest, charge and get the CPS to prosecute with the evidence to enable this to happen. Stabbing and shootings are so common place they no longer even get reported in the public domain. How many crimes don't get solved? Rather case closed and forgotten. The number of low to high level crimes which remain unsolved is staggering.  The criminal fraternity know this, they know they won't get caught so they just carry on.  Biggest crimes which affect most people, probably are phone and car theft, both are prolific and what do the police do, diddly squat. zilch, nothing, provide a crime reference number and the case is closed. Not good enough, not by a country mile.   Met Engage? I don't think so.

Recent data suggests a drop in violent crime. Gang violence will make a significant contribution to the numbers. You are unlikely to be attacked by a stranger
    • Unfortunately there are plenty of shops which don't care and will sell vapes, alcohol and weed to minors, I'm sure they won't care about selling them fireworks. Or the kids nick them.
