Goodrich road - just generally verbally abused and told to "f**k off back into my house" and who the f**k did i think I was" - they then leaned over the fence and threw our recycling bin all over the place. Extremely agressive - and absolutely no need for it. All i said was would you mind not leaning on my fence...

OF COURSE you must notify the police. I'm not quite sure why you're posing the question.

Actually, here's a thought: What about a "shame" section on the site - it's not hard to whip out your mobile and take a quick snap of someone behaving in an anti-social way. Then post it here with the date and time. Over time it might help to give the safer neighbourhood team more information about repeat offenders, local pains-in-the-ass and patterns of behaviour.

Excellent idea.

However, from the relative safety of your own home you could record the incident as evidence of anti social behaviour. Even if they had fled the scene before you found the presence of mind to get your camera out in time to record their behaviour, offensive language etc, you could record the effects of their response to a reasonable request with regards to your property strewn recycling etc. Witnesses always help, of course, and why not record their response to the incident, too?

I'm not at all sure about a shaming section of the forum, much better to take the official route and share your experience here.

'fled the scene'?

This is just one of those things. New Bhoy, I would recommend doing what I do:

Spend he requisite amount of time imagining you have superhuman powers which, were the situation to be replayed, would allow you to squash them flat like gnats.. then remember that what goes around comes around - and that there's no real point in escalating an annoying yet comparatively trivial encounter when you are the one with the most to lose.

If they're emptying your recycling again tomorrow, then notify the authorities.

I ended up moving out of Camberwell because of a group of youths (who used to hang out in the (private) carpark which belonged to my block of flats) and regularly behaved in much this manner. Southwark Antisocial Behaviour Unit were absolutely useless and after a couple of years of it, we just decided to move. There is so little you can do (unless you take matters into your own hands - which I did consider at one point).

I really feel for you. It's uneccesary and unpleasant. Don't let it play on your mind, and despite what i've said, do report it.

I hope they abuse the wrong person next time and get what's coming to them.

Hmmm..interesting, I was walking down Goodrich on my way to the little shop on Crystal Palace yesterday afternoon and ran into some 'youths' (I think it was 3 of them though) who blurted out quite a few inappropriate comments about my physique. I ignored them completely as if they were not even there and they had a few more things to say, one of them something along the lines of 'who does she think she is' and things I can't repeat on here.

I wonder if it was the same lot.

"'Fled the scene' is used about 4000 times a month in crime reporting round the world." This according to the business section of The Australian newspaper website: http://www.theaustralian.com.au/business/media/fled-the-scene-is-used-about-4000-times-a-month-in-crime-reporting-round-the-world/story-e6frg996-1225890454982 .

The brief article points out that in India they use the term "decamp" to describe how alleged crims remove themselves from the scene. I didn't really think about it until I read Bob's post but I reckon it is a not uncommon stylistic use of mild or light irony that probably works better in face to face conversations where body language and tone of voice are apparent. Perhaps after I've been posting for a while longer such a foible may be appreciated for what it is, a mildly ironic reference to cliched language that suggests the writer's meaning. I also realised that, in my post, I may have provided advice on how to deal with the situation. I normally try to avoid that since it tends to lead to counter advice and can end up in a ding dong between opposing advisors. My preferred approach is to share any experience and let others make their mind up. I'll try to stick to that in future.

    • The tenant's business has already failed. If the landlord doesn't accept it, they can have a vacant property, stand in the queue of creditors, and get paid little or nothing. It's a gamble that the restructuring will work and the tenant will start paying rent again. Commercial properties are often hard to let. 🤷
    • An inquiry will put a huge amount of time and resource into looking at what happened in the past and why it happened and who was responsible and, in a year or two maybe more, a report will be produced and actions may or may not be taken, some of those responsible for bad decisions will already have resigned and moved on.   Given that we now already understand some of the issues that allowed this awful behaviour to continue unchallenged, my concern is less about whether there is an inquiry to examine what happened in the past but about what is being done right now to protect girls and young women from predatory and exploitative men in whatever race or identity they come in. Inquiries examine the past but don't necessarily solve problems and they certainly don't come up with conclusions quickly which is why they can often feel hollow.  I'd rather see perpetrators and those that let the perpetrators act with impunity, actually being prosecuted and an inquiry won't do that.  I suspect that's why some MPs voted against an inquiry. But do feel free to give me examples of inquiries that really made a difference and actually changed things in a timely and effective way.
    • In recent consultation on further ED CPZ the majority of respondents were against. Fully appreciate you may not live on a road proposed for CPZ. If you are close to that area it is likely you will be affected by parking displacement if the CPZ goes in. I was just curious what James Barber's position on this is? Perhaps he'll come on here and let us know. He was always really good at visiting the forum.
