womanofdulwich
I have never seen this film on TV, and thought it should have been by now- does any one know any reason why it is never on tv?( I mean free tv not sky etc?)I wondered if it is banned?- I remember it as being very powerful and one of the films everyone should see. The Scorpion
wod - (I have a copy of it on Video) but I have searched lots and cannot find mention of it being banned - I don't know why it has not been shown much but I am sure I watched it a year or so ago on TV (Maybe the Beeb?) with my sons - I made a point of asking them if they would like to watch "My favourite movie of all time" with me, and they did (to mixed opinions)I know it has not been shown a lot - why, I don't know, but possibly due to the stigma of Mental Institutions (this movie came out in 1975 and electric shock treatment etc was then the norm, I think)I agree, everyone should watch it (mostly because Jack Nicholson was at his very best in this one :D) and also though some serious and sad scenes are prevalent, there are also some scenes that make you laugh so hard and smile a lot :)This REALLY should be shown more!Sue Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/12557-one-flew-over-the-cuckoos-nest-film/#findComment-347584 Share on other sites

Peckhamgatecrasher
I remember seeing this in the cinema when it came out. Afterwards, everyone was shocked into silence - it was ages before anyone got up out of their seats and left. Very powerful film. Ann
One of the best films ever made. Yes , contoversial but very real. My mother who worked in mental health made very poignant remarks to us at the time. From my recollection it wasn't so much ECT treatment which certainly continued for many years since but the ' frontal lobotomy ' that Jack Nicholson's character underwent.I would happily watch that film with my teenagers and discuss the issues inherant in the film.Jack Nicholson at his best and many others alonside him in that film. Narnia
I watched it recently on Sky. I guess then can repeat movies more often that the others due to the number of channels it has. *Bob*
Like Amadeus, it's one of those gong-bagging films where the distributors have managed to limit how often it's shown in order to preserve cachet (and protect DVD re-releases).But it's more of a melodrama with a touch of panto rather than some kind of hard-hitting documentorial expos? of mental institutions of the time. It pretends to be a bit more serious than it is. ECT etc was controversial but I don't think there was anything controversial about the film itself.Great flick though. *Bob*
I must have popped-out for a wee when the Turkish stuff happened in the film. Will keep an eye out for it next time though. Did the film have any impact on package holidays to Lanzarote at all? giggirl
I saw this at the cinema when I was about 13/14. I had a face caked in slap and high heels. Needed to pass for 18. As someone has already pointed out, nobody moved when the credits started to roll. YawnAlot
One of my all time favourite films. I'm sure it has been on telly........but can't think when. Its such a sad film, especially at the end when Jack Nicholson's character is in bed (unlike my new cosy new sofa bed http://www.fashion4home.co.uk/sofa-beds ).......... DulwichFox
I did see the stage show at The Gielgud Theatre in London. 2004Randle P McMurphy was played By Christian Slater. Was a good performance, but having a twenty minute break half waythrough detsroyed the mood a little. citizenED
I've seen it a couple of times and agree it is a powerful piece of work with great performances. Nicholson at his scintillating best. *Bob*
Does Jack Nicholson do anything apart from play.. Jack Nicholson?Anyway, he played Jack Nicholson really well in Cuckoo's Nest. It's right up there with him portrayal of Jack Nicholson in The Shining and a world away from the slightly dopey, boss-eyed version of Jack Nicholson he played in Prizzi's Honour. (See also Clint Eastwood, Tom Cruise, Sean Connery, Harrison Ford, Nic Cage.. Arnie.. ) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/12557-one-flew-over-the-cuckoos-nest-film/#findComment-347781 Share on other sites

giggirl
*Bob* - you can add the once great Al Pacino to the list of actors who only play themselves. They don't start off that way of course. Then again, he was opposite a French-Canadian whol barely spoke English playing a Scot too so you can hardly blame him. The casting director for Highlander deserves a medal.Edit: Have just looked them up on IMDB and neither worked on a big film again. Justice. garden man
The film was brilliant, but the book was stunning, nurse Ratchet was supposed to represent control by "Authority" and the big Indian by smothering him at the end prevented "Them" winning and taking his freedom of mind.Cant recommend the book highly enough.
