Who decides what is fashionable and what isn't, and are those that follow fashion devoid of imaginative thought and unable to decide for themselves what looks good on them, regardless of whether its in vogue or otherwise. Discuss at your leisure.

Edited as a result of rubbish spelling.

Emerson, I give you the very fabulous Miranda Priestly (fictional editor of Runway fashion magazine) in The Devil Wears Prada, who puts it so much better than I ever could:

"This... stuff'? Oh. Okay. I see. You think this has nothing to do with you. You go to your closet and you select... I don't know... that lumpy blue sweater, for instance because you're trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care about what you put on your back. But what you don't know is that that sweater is not just blue, it's not turquoise. It's not lapis. It's actually cerulean. And you're also blithely unaware of the fact that in 2002, Oscar de la Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns. And then I think it was Yves Saint Laurent... wasn't it who showed cerulean military jackets? I think we need a jacket here. And then cerulean quickly showed up in the collections of eight different designers. And then it, uh, filtered down through the department stores and then trickled on down into some tragic Casual Corner where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that blue represents millions of dollars and countless jobs and it's sort of comical how you think that you've made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact, you're wearing the sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room from a pile of stuff. "

Not if you wear them with fishnets and FMBs - it could be a good look for you, you never know.

I loved that film too, and Meryl Streep in it. Anyone seen the September Issue? I was thinking about that film the other day because I swear that if Anna Wintour* was a man she would be the equally scary Tom Ford.

* For the uninitiated, the Meryl Streep character is based on Anna Wintour. Apparently Ms Wintour allowed the September Issue to be made as she thought it would be good PR to make up a bit of ground for the Devil Wears Prada. Backfired - oh yes.

OK, so I left it for a few hours in order to seem more interesting. Anyone? Anyone?

The riposte is:

And here I am wearing the sweater that you think Oscar de la Renta made me wear. But mysteriously, blue sweaters are sold in their tens of thousands every day of every year entirely regardless of what the current dictates of the self-regarding twirling of the fashion world. Because the reality of the clothing industry is that the vast majority of people couldn't care less what Oscar de la Renta thinks, can't spell Yves Saint Laurent and simply go on wearing the same sort of clothes season after season, buying what they like or can afford. Take them away, and replace them with some other designer names, and the world continues to spin on its axis. The geniuses of the fashion world believe that they somehow own the wardrobes of ordinary people, but actually they are quite irrelevant.

As clear as day, how could I have not understood the whole fashion thing. Very poor on my part.

Yes, but it doesn't matter, that's the thing. Could be the blazer or the colour puce. Wouldn't make much difference to the sales of Peacocks.

But who's to say you look any good in your designer labels, you? Others may detest your look in the same way that you detest the sporty look, consisting of track suits and hoodies, Mr Beckham carries that look off very well. As long as YOU feel comfortable about what YOU wear, why concern yourself with what others wear, after all it's their choice.

I was working in Milan this year and I expected to feel embarrassingly unstylish but to my relief the Milanese appear to have a fond regard for double denim, or leather with tassles. Nasty on a grand scale.

Personally I have always thought obvious designer wear suggests a lack of individuality in personal style, but I dont think about it that much as fundamentally I dont care about clothes, it really is whats underneath that counts ;-)

George Amani? Haha. Get those at the Elephant & Castle market, did you?

Yep, it's a myth that the Italians are stylish. Crap leather jackets, tracksuits, ponytails, and stupid pointy shoes can be observed in abundance along the full length of the country.

I?m loving Jah's comment; the best on here so far. A little succinct, but says it all.

Edited because I see that I just did the "100" without even trying.

    • https://www.standard.co.uk/news/crime/police-hunt-attack-south-london-b1247389.html Apologies if already posted on here - did look, couldn't find anything... 'The Metropolitan Police have appealed for help to find a man after a woman was seriously injured in an unprovoked attack in south London. The woman, in her 20s, was assaulted on Lordship Lane in East Dulwich at around 4.45pm on Monday August 25. She was treated by paramedics for injuries to her face and her jaw was broken in the attack. The victim was then taken to hospital and she continues to be supported by specialist officers. Officers are now searching for the suspect and are urging members of the public to come forward if they have information. He is described as a black man in his 30s or 40s with balding hair. He was wearing dark clothing during the attack. He is said to have approached the woman while she was by herself before swearing at her and then hitting her in the face. Detective constable Charlotte Kerr, who is leading the investigation, said: “We are working hard to find the person we believe is responsible for this senseless and unprovoked attack. “While we continue our enquiries, we hope our increased neighbourhood police presence will offer some reassurance to women and girls throughout the local area. “If you saw anything on Monday, 25 August – particularly between the junction of Lordship Lane and Chesterfield Grove at around 16:45hrs - do not hesitate to get in touch with us. “No matter how small you think your information is, it may be the key that unlocks our investigation.” Any witnesses or anyone who can help identify the suspect is asked to please contact the Met via 101, quoting 5018/25AUG or 01/7897951/25. Those who wish to share information anonymously can contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.'
    • I think, with schools, you really have to find the one that suits your child, rather than moving to a school catchment and then hoping it works. Mine both went to a high ranking and covetable school and had very different experiences - one loved it and the other was bullied and traumatised, and hated it. WE actually moved away because she couldn't walk around the area (yes - Dulwich area, so one of the local schools).
    • We live a little further down, on Pymers Mead. Traffic is terrible (always has been, but worse since the introduction of the Southwark LTNs). It's mainly the school drop -- traffic is noticeably lighter once the private schools break up  Have a few friends who live on that side of CR backing on to the train line. None has had any major complaints and the gardens on that stretch are fairly long, so you're not right on the line. Some have kids who go to Charter North -- its catchment defintely extends to Croxted Road. Other state secondaries nearby are Elmgreen and, of course, Kingsdale, although that doesn't have a catchment -- pure lottery
    • Hi. Does anyone know of a silver making jewellery workshop. I am trying to find something nice for my daughter’s 18th birthday.l for her and some friends but everything I find online is too pricey or can’t accommodate 10 girls. Thanks
