In the last hour my door bell has been rung every 20 mins or so. I'm home alone tonight, I'm not expecting anyone so I don't want to open the door. When I look out the window I can't see any people on the street or any car driving away - am I being paranoid?? Surely if it was a friend they would call me...

If you dont feel safe, dont open the door. Have you got a view of your front door? maybe you could look out as soon as it rings. Did you call out to ask who it was? It could be someone calling unexpectedly, but if you feel wary, keep safe.

Could you ring a neighbour even? maybe they have had callers aswell, it may help to put your mind at rest.

Hope your ok also.

Thanks guys! Did make me feel a bit nervous. I didn't call out, in a half-house so have a shared entrance, kinda didn't want to draw attention to being female.... But if it's happened to anyone else tonight let me know, it'll make me feel better (that's not very nice is it?!)
Always make sure you make some kind of noise so they know you are there even if you don't answer the door. Sometimes thieves ring on the bell to see whether you are in or not before the burgle you. It happened to my neighbour who didn't answer the door and a guy broke into her house when she was in bed thinking she was out. Sorry I don't want to scare you but I thought it would be helpful information to know.

We had the same thing yesterday - a man wearing a white cap rang our door bell three times claiming to be collecting for

'homeless kids in the area' with the recents news of forced entries and burglaries we are sceptical to answer the door to

anyone we don't know.

And after politely telling him (without opening the door) that we were not interested I am at a loss to why he rang a further two times. Very strange.

I've had door knocking and bell ringing on my door before,it happened over a space of a month then stopped suddenly...I did did found out that it was a bunch of pesky little scoolkids playing 'knock down ginger' n peoples doors, as they done the same tomy neighbour and she spotted them.

I live along a route that people pass through so i guess can expect things like that to happen - but next time i'll be ready and waiting....!

Of course....all gypsie hail from the circus!!! What era are you living in...dickensian, it seems?

CMG - you misread my post, i never said 'all gypsies hail from the circus'.

Of course they are by definition 'travelers' and of course travelers by definition can be called Gypsies.

Haringey Council information on 'Gypsies':

Brief history and background to Traveller communities.

?Traveller?/'Gypsies' is an umbrella term covering many distinct communities, including

Fairground or Showmen, Gypsies/Romany, Roma, Circus families, Irish

Travellers, New (Age) Travellers and Bargee Travellers, those living on the

waterways. Gypsies are defined as an ethnic minority group by the Race

Relations Act (1976) as their home lifestyle is significantly different to that of

the majority settled community. More recently, Irish Travellers have also been

determined as being covered by that Act. The term ?Traveller? is generally

acceptable to most of these groups, although the term ?Gypsy? is acceptable

to only some communities, as they are concerned that the settled community

can perceive it as having negative connotations.

    • I have had multiple jobs completed at my home by T.D. PLUMBFIX SOLUTIONS LTD, and I wouldn't go to anyone else now. They always come at the agreed day/time, I have never been asked to rearrange. The jobs have always been completed to extremely high standards, and as a perfectionist myself, I appreciate this level of care and detail. I'm grateful of the clear up afterward too, leaving me very little to do after the job is done. I am always blown away by the speed and efficiency  - no waffle, no flannel, just sheer hard work from start to finish. In summary - a highly professional first class service. Don't hesitate to call T.D. PLUMBFIX SOLUTIONS LTD, if you like excellence and trade people that will respect your home.
    • Or increase tax.  The freezing of personal allowances is one way, not what I would choose.  On principle I don't care if the rich immigrate.  The main parties could have been more honest before the election.  Reform is deluded.
    • I edited my post because I couldn't be sure we were talking about politicians and I couldn't be bothered to read it all back. But it was off the back of a thread discussing labour councillors, so it went without saying really and I should have left it.  What I said was 'There's something very aggressive about language like that - it's not big and it's not clever. Some of the angry energy that comes from the far left is pretty self-defeating.' (In relation to a labour councillor rather immaturely, in my view, wearing a jumper that read 'fuck the Tories').  But I don't recall saying that "violent rhetoric" is exclusively the domain of the left wing. So I do think you're taking a bit of a bit of leap here.
