Okay, I'll do it.

The additional 2.5% on VAT would turn a pound store into at 102.1277 pence store, not 102.5.

This is because the additional 2.5% is added to the pre VAT price of the product, which is 85.10638p, not the inclusive price of 100p.

No.

What Mick may be saying is that VAT is a tax which at whatever rate it is goes to the government. Anyone registered for VAT is acting as a tax collector and nothing else. So the price per unit remains the same. However, with the additional tax, less units may be sold.

Ah. I was thinking of the 99p shops. Different kettle of fish, maybe. Fair bit of edible stuff. All pretty straightforward. ;) http://customs.hmrc.gov.uk/channelsPortalWebApp/channelsPortalWebApp.portal?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=pageLibrary_PublicNoticesAndInfoSheets&propertyType=document&columns=1&id=HMCE_CL_000118#P67_4124

    • Please be aware that there is a huge sheet of ice approx 12ft x 6ft on the road at the top end of Avondale Rise on the left hand side approaching Ivanhoe Road.  The council was told earlier this morning, but advised that, due to a reduced service, it is unlikely that grit /salt will be spread before Monday!  Several (thankfully minor) accidents have happened since this morning.  A resident has thoughtfully erected a temporary sign to advise traffic of the hazard, but bearing in mind that temperatures are due to fall to -4 over the weekend and this is on a bus route, please be very careful if driving on this road.
    • Paul was great for us - came round at an ungodly hour of the day at short notice to fix a problem. Very nice bloke too
