Muttley
What is the connection between East Dulwich and Morecambe & Wise's most famous sketch, "The Stripper" ? Ted Max
I'm guessing it's David Rose (once -Mr Judy Garland), who wrote The Stripper, the music they do the routine to. Was he from ED? Muttley
No, not as far as I know. It's actually an explicit SE22 reference. Loz
Ooh - got it. It took a couple of YouTube visits. The radio announcement at the start - the tune, "The Stripper" was requested by Mr M Allison of Crystal Palace Road.Taa daa! Ted Max
A reference to Malcolm Allison, ex-manager of Crystal Palace? Or just coincidence. Muttley
Well done. There's only one CPR in Britain according to Streetmap. The larger than life Mr M(alcolm) Allison was manager of Crystal Palace at that time, which is presumably the reason behind the name (as Ted Max suggested, simultaneously). James
Speaking of which, why is Crystal Palace Road (and the CPT) nowhere near Crystal Palace? The road doesn't even lead there. Keef
Well the old kent road isn't in kent, but traditionally, it would have beent he road taken to Kent. I think the same was tru for CP road, when CP was at Penge, and Crystal Palace was given it's name. Jah Lush
No idea but an aquaintance of mine once lived there and if memory serves me well it has got a sort of mini-church type structure in the garden. It's owned or was owned by the same guy who owns/owned the property in Upland Road that has the petrol pumps outside. Oops! that could have been another question. Chantoozie
would that be the mini-churchtype structure in the garden that strikes the hour, every hour, even throughout the night REALLY REALLY IRRITATINGLY??!!?? :) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/1495-another-quiz-question-se22-and-morecambewise/#findComment-41356 Share on other sites
Mrs Y
A close friend assures me that the houses in Upland and Dunstans both have clock faces with petrol pumps outside and were both owned and built by the same person. The folly in question at Dunstans is, as previously mentioned, fully operational with chimes on the hour, complete with weather vane, arched doorway and stained glass window. Very impressive I think. Chantoozie
I'm sure it's very impressive, but when you live near it (as I used to) it's awful having a clocktower chime throughout the night - the sound travels unbelievably and it used to wake me up in the middle of the night (and remind me what time it was dare I should wake up early ;-)). Fortunately I was only renting for a while; so used earplugs... but if I'd lived there as a 'proper' resident, I would have tried to see if it could be silenced at night. I don't know how their neighbours stand it! Keef
I used to know a guy (complete tosser I might add) who rented on of the flats in that Dunstan's Road house. Went to a party there once, and loved the little tower in the garden! The flat itself was beautiful too! Thankfully he got thrown out and hasn't been heard of since!
