I'm getting really fed up with these people that have stop overs in this hostel/accommodation at the end of barry road, On my way home from work I have been called at and whistled at on numerous occassions and made to feel really uncomfortable, Ive seen people praying at the side of Vans, spitting on to the road, groups pf men hanging around when its dark, talk about lowering the tone of East Dulwich - WHY HAS SUCH A PLACE BEEN PUT IN THIS NICE AREA.!!!

OK the OP was a little injudicious in the second clause of her post but I think some are being less generous...

If she had said "I'm getting really fed up with these people that have stop overs in this hostel/accommodation at the end of barry road, On my way home from work I have been called at and whistled at on numerous occassions and made to feel really uncomfortable,..." I wonder what the response would have been?

My response would have been - that's a shame, maybe have a word with the management if it continues, you have a right to walk home without feeling harassed/intimidated. And I still think that. But what the OP actually did was put people exercising their freedom to congragate and to express religious views in public in the same group as people who indimidate women for fun, along with a suggestion that it's ok to house these people, so long as it is somewhere else, where they can intimidate those from, well, somewhere else.

It was then that I lost my sympathy.

Though I'll repeat, (and should have said it at the start so fair cop), OP has a right to walk about without feeling hassled and should do something about that specific point. And only that.

I go past this place at least twice a day for years and have never had any problems whatsoever from the people there. I do wonder where they are going and what they are running from and feel for them. many of the people have children and that must be especially tough.

I am 30 seconds from the Barry road church. I have never had a problem. Yes alot of men hanging around outside, because they have nothing else to do.These people arrive from countries with awful problems and lord knows what they have witnessed and what they may be escaping from.

I have donated kids clothes, toys, bedding etc. and even a sofa. The alleged "awful" men came to my house to collect the sofa and were truly decent folk.

Please reconsider "buddha" and think about what you are trying to relay. AND think about less fortunate people.

If you are a true buddha, you should get it? I wish you well.

I too live nearby - I have no problem with any of the residents, if you walk on that side of the road you will often get a smaile from the men. Going in and out of the gate (which leads to the church) residents may say hello to you.

Martin the manager is very helpful and if you have any concerns, talk with him.

If I was calling and whistling at a female I would be chastised for being sexist,

because immigrants do it it sounds like it's okay and they should not be criticised.

Double standards here people.

buddha has every right to walk down the street and be free from any catcalling.

Regarding the quality of the neighbourhood it is at best OK for a London borough. I consider it to be nothing special

from what I observe locally and read from this forum.

Having 2 murders in as many months in that road has done little to sway my opinion.

    • This is simply untrue. The area is not 2/3 storeys maximum. Hambledon Court is on the other side of tracks from the Jewson site on Burrow Rd, is 8 storeys, and is barely known (let alone bothersome) to most people in East Dulwich. Felbridge House, Petworth House etc on the opposite side of the station from the new development are all 5 storeys tall. East Dulwich Charter (which neighbours the new development) is itself 4-5 storeys (depending on which block you're talking about). What's more, Hambledon Court was finished in about 1978 iirc and no-one has built anything similar around here since then - so the "slippery slope" "genie in the bottle" argument doesn't work either. You can't simultaneously argue that Southwark is too slow in approving new construction but also suggest this will lead to a flood of new high-rise housing! At current rates of approval, we can expect our next 8 storey building to arrive in...2072!
    • I checked - the Hanway Street place was Mandeer - it moved to New Oxford Street I think and was replaced by Hakkasan - very different prices.
    • Suppose it depends on how many Christmas cards from family and friends you’re waiting to receive. It’s been the Christmas period so surely give the post delivery service some leeway. Like Sue I’ve not posted off so many this year but some I still write letters to  e.g my late mum’s cousins and other family  but hey ho that’s something I do and enjoy.  I used to hand deliver Christmas cards to a lot of neighbours on my street but gave up this year as realised that most of them I don’t see or speak to and can only count on a few to call a true friend or neighbour.
