BT phone line still dead.

I am on Tintagel Crescent SE22 and still have no BT phone line - no dial tone, completely dead. Anyone else still experiencing similar problems?

Mine is dead too and has been since yesterday. There's nothing reported on the BT outage page here: http://btbusiness.custhelp.com/app/service_status

It's a nightmare trying to get hold of anyone at BT but I managed to get someone to call me by going via the Live Chat option here (I'm at work!) http://bt.custhelp.com/app/contact/c/761,874,875 They were getting "inconclusive results" when they tested the line and promised to call me back later. Let's see!

Mine's an 8299 number - has anyone had problems with a different one?

Chesterfield Grove also dead since yesterday.

Had a text from BT saying Monday at 5pm is their SLA deadline. Be surprised if they don't see it as more urgent than that with the number of people affected. They have also promised regular SMS updates, will post anything I get on here.

Also, on a separate BT related topic, I just discovered that BT provide CallerID for free if you sign up for BT Privacy (which blocks sales calls!).

We have had conflicting messages about what the problem is - first we were told that a cable had been cut through and then we were told that part of the cable had been stolen!

The BT Openreach van has been parked on Lordship lane since yesterday (just south of the Mag)- when I passed it late yesterday afternoon they were pumping a load of water out of a manhole- can't tell what they're up to right now, but there are now two vans and a lorry, and they seem to be setting up some weird looking equipment.

They may be pumping out the cable chamber just to get access to it - sometimes the chambers can get flooded without causing a service interruption - (and they also can fill with gas). Telephone cable (where it isn't fibre, which mainly it isn't in the local network) is made of copper - which has a high scrap value as its quality is very high. The London-Birmingham micro-wave link was paid for (common myth at least has it) by the pulled copper which it replaced. I am not surprised to hear that cable (or a section of it) could have been stolen - if it has been it makes repair much more time consuming - as it requires two sets of joints to be made (linking a replacement length of cable to each of the two cut ends) - rather than just jointing the cut ends together (when no cable length is missing). There are may be also be problems pulling replacement cable if the ducts are already quite full - as they may be around ED. Some telephone infrastructure in London is now 100+ years old - in ED probably 80-90+.

BT normally offers rental rebates where service has been interrupted like this - not that that's much of a consolation to those without land-line access.

The Openreach van was still there (junction LL/Townley) 4.30pm today. No idea what they were doing.

Cheese Block accepting no card payments today, owing to same issue, and I imagine it's the same for some other shops.

I spoke with the Openreach guys today. They confirmed that they a laying a replacement 2000pair cable to replace the damaged one thieves tried to nick. Would you believe it the thieves cut the cable opposite East Dulwich Police station.

How long does it take to join 2000 pair in two places? About 3 days.

If you're lucky your line is back tomorrow. But don't count on it.

Keep an eye/ear out for any elderly frail neighbours you may know of as the kind of alarms they wear in case they have a fall don't work when the telephone lines are out.

I was told will be fixed by 6pm today but if it has been vandalised then there is nothing more we can do than wait and moan to BT.

Having back up lines with other providers helps though.

Just got an impromptu visit from a BT engineer, he needed to verify which physical connection outside was mine before it could be diverted at exchange. He said it would be back on later today.

Copper hit an all time high price earlier this year, BT engineer said armed gangs steal these cables so it's a serious business.

Said will be fixed by Sunday now. 170 meteres of damage and they said it may not be the last time it will happen.
