I'm more of a traditionalist where names are concerned, Bailey could be a girl's or boy's name, Bailey might sound ok today but in 20years time it might sound daft. I would wait until you see her then decide, pick a name that will suit her now and when she is older, and a name in which she won't be teesed or embarrassed at school, i.e NOT Apple, Trixie belle, Peaches,(got the picture) but pretty girly names like Isabella, Gabriella, Laura, Lily, Grace, Hayley, Sophia and look up the meaning of the name. I got these names from Top 100 Girls names web site.

Good Luck lets us know what you choose.

Worry away, Zeban.

As well as Irish names, I also like the name Sydney and Adelaide for a girl but as I am Australian and children are dual citizens, family would find them difficult and they would not sound quite right if they ever decide to live in Australia.

My two boys have Old Testament names and we are often asked if we are religious or Jewish (no to both). I always find that funny.

EDmummy I will worry away... especially at someone worrying if a name sounds 'pikey' or 'chavvy' and asking complete strangers their opinion. If you like the name, use it, if not don't. My friend just used the name Tallulah for her little girl, I'm sure many women on here would hate the name but does my friend care? NO!

My name's Zeban. Not exactly the most common name but I love it for that. I love that it's a talking point when I meet people. I couldn't give a toss what other people might or might not associate with it.

I have never really dared ask anyone what they think of my children's names as I think many people probably hate them

I like them though so that's ok!

In our case they are all fairly unusual and you rarely meet others with the same. I find it very odd how people actively choose to give their children a very popular name ... They no doubt think I am weird for doing the opposite !

Hahaha, if only such a name existed! Children at school can always find some way of making fun of a name!!

:)

We liked the name Langley for a girl (or could be for a boy too). It's an old English name that means 'the cool green meadow'. But we ended up going with a different name, though just as nice. Bailey is nice too. What are you thinking for a middle name?

Congrats on your pregnancy, and good luck for the delivery.

xx

EDMummy, I love Old Testament and especially Jewish boys names despite being non-religious. A friend I've known since 2002 stopped me in the street and asked me what we were doing for Hannukah (which I'm now struggling to even spell!) on the strength of our baby's name, I was a little bit confused to say the least! She said "Oh I thought you were Jewish before but his name just cemented it!"

Like Fuschia I couldn't pick a top ten name but I know lots of people wouldn't pick a name as unusual as our choice so it's horses for courses. And I will never reveal my final baby names until the bubba is on earth, people are far less rude at that juncture!

Good luck picking though OP! Girls names are so fun :)

We just named our new baby girl Emmy (middle name Grace)which I though was slightly out of the ordinary without being daft, and had traditional elements, as it was like Emma and Emily. Our second favourite was Lexie, but she was definitely not a Lexie when she arrived. My mum hates Emmy, but I couldn't care less!

Rosaleigh (Rosa), Stevie, Elsie, Maggy, Leigh.....we decided on Alexa for our little girl, think she will get Lexi. Most names are shortened so that's defo worth thinking about. Elouise is beautiful but will probs end up Lou or Ella.

You could spend many hours on the day looking for the right one. Good luck!

I have always thought it rude to say other than positive things re baby names. (However as you are asking, I am not fussed on using names that can also be surnames as first names from a confusion point of view.) Congrats on the impending birth and good luck. Call her what you like, she is your little bundle of joy and sod what anyone else thinks.

As for a suggestion Betsy.

Not to mention the relationship with the last name. An old school chum might never forgive her parents for naming her Anita, which is a fine name unless your last name is Dyck! Not well thought out, that one.

Can't forget Jen Scrotch, or Drew Peacock. They certainly learned to keep a low profile but first day of school was never a good day for them, poor things. What are parents thinking?

I also like the name Bailey. Good luck! I found choosing a name really difficult right up until the doctor yelled "It's a boy! What's his name?".

I found it really difficult to choose a name for my baby girl, she was nameless for a week! There were a few names I liked but hubby didn't and vice versa, and we changed our minds about three times even then.

If you like a name then go with it, things I wanted to avoid were strange spellings of names (the kid will go through life having to explain the spelling) and names which are hard to pronounce (name would be mis-pronounced a lot)

(I like Bailey btw, reminds me of a character on Gray's Anatomy...)

Good luck!

I like looking at nameberry for interesting name ideas and lists. It's US based but covers a wide spectrum of names. They even have lists for 'If you like ... You might love ...'. Here is the one for Bailey:

On the Grey's Anatomy front, I like the names Addison and Meredith. And the phonemically related name Madison! None of those are my usual taste but I just like the flow of them and the way they look written down.

    • But what are you basing that judgement on? Vibes? where exactly and under what council is money being spent wisely? what about parties which promise to cut waste, come to power and find out there is no waste?
    • I've just had James from Trelco round doing taps and hot water.  Prompt, efficient and pleasant people and the cost came in under what we thought it would be! Will definitely use them again.
    • Yes - adult care is a large part of the CT bill.  That does not mean the council spend our money well or wisely.
    • “What do councils spend all the money on?” Is, in my view, one of the most profoundly emblematic of our times  we go about our lives, backed up by councils and governments and complain they aren’t needed  reform win elections based on “we’re gonna go in and slash all the waste!” Only to later admit there effectively isn’t any oh and by the way we need to increase council tax   Now all we have to offer is racism and ineptitude sorry about that  https://www.gbnews.com/money/reform-elon-musk-doge-failed-savings So where does the money go? On a multitude of services - but the increasingly aged population and the care provision required is a large part of it  the government could give councils more money to avoid council tax rises  - but the we would have to pay more in jewels taxation  and as a country we tend to pay less than other similar countries  so we end up with an expensive mend and make do approach  I don’t see any political parties offering a solution   Starmer is obviously lacking in many areas but he is the result of a hostile media and a reluctant population willing to hear truths  (wait until we hear how much we will need to increase defence spending by in the coming years) If a party stopped pretending all the money was wasted but published a list of costs, projections and proposals that wasn’t gutted to suit the landscape of needing to not bemonstered by the press or deemed too expensive by voters I would be very interested      can’t see that happening tho  (also worth reminding ourselves of all the brexiters who said things like “I don’t care how much it costs   I don’t care if I lose my job  it’s about taking back control!” And yet now we find them complaining about increasing costs. As they always will complain about everything  because it’s always someone else’s fault)
