Does anyone else think of Denmark Hill station as being 'honorary East Dulwich' on the basis that many of us commute from there? Anyway, the scaffolding over the platforms is part of the project to provide lifts, and the station will end up looking like this. Good news for those of us with buggies.

But we'll lose that fun game that they like to play on commuters at Denmark Hill when they change the platform from 1 to 3 and only announce it as the train starts to pull into the platform so that there's a scrum trying to get up one set of stairs and down the other rather rapidly. They're particularly good at pulling that stunt just after another train has arrived on 2 so that those trying to run from 1 to 3 get caught up in those trying to leave from 2 and 3.

Whilst I applaud the attempt to make the the station more user friendly, that bridge doesn't look very in keeping with the architecture of Denmark Hill station. It's all glass and metal when the station is attractive brick.

I appreciate the costs involved but this is the sort of attitude that led to Peckham Rye station becoming the abomination it is now.

It makes perfect sense for DH station to be improved for access to one of the busiest hospitals in London. I'm pretty sure access to all the major hospitals north of the river from local train and underground stations would never have taken this long to sort out. Maybe a small M&S simply food will open up there too hehe ;-)

Louisa.

Indeed! If they provide 'better access' but keep the doors the same then it won't make that much difference to the flow of passengers in and out of the station. Hopefully common sense will prevail.

Maybe the new long walkways will give ticket inspectors somewhere a little more sensible to stand rather than bringing the station to gridlock when they decide to do a ticket swoop.

I am very dismayed by the extremely ugly and unessential' improvement works to create a step-free route' at Denmark Hill station - which has also resulted in the removal of trees, vegetation etc - not exactly great for the environment. It is a small, historic station, that will be completely ruined by this addition. And I dread to think what the cost of this is to us the taxpayer. Meanwhile they are cutting the South London Line route from Denmark Hill to Victoria/London Bridge - you have to ask where is Network Rail's sense of priority?

I think the plans look absolutely fine.

Yes, it's a modern concrete/glass structure, but I think it would be irresponsible to spend extra money on some sort twee mock-Victorian creation. Surely providing access to those who wouldn't otherwise be able to use the station should be a priority.

    • Sorry Sue - me again. This has been on my mind all day, it's a big bug bear of mine. If you don't mind - please can you private message me some of these shops so I can cross reference / add to my AVOID list.  Thanks in advance. Let's make sure this doesn't happen this Christmas, particularly as we head into sales season. Even more problematic in my experience.
    • Pity you didn't quote what you are referring to, Mal. I didn't see the previous post, and my mind is boggling 😮
    • The Cherry Tree was absolutely excellent for a while when a youngish couple ran it and brought in a really good chef. It was them who renamed it The Cherry Tree. They were really turning it around. The chef did fantastic Scotch eggs, and one of the best roasts I've ever had. If memory serves the then owner,  for some reason known only to himself, took a dislike to them and what they were doing and sacked them all. And yes we weren't expecting a top class  meal last Christmas, and we left it too late to book anywhere else, but we weren't expecting it for a hundred pounds EACH to be quite as terrible as it was. Stupid us. Not sure why you are confused by my post, Jazzer? Did I misremember? Now it's got even more confusing because my posts have been merged and your confused emoji is shown at the bottom of the second one instead of the first 🤣
    • Hear hear. Very well said. Thank you and all the best for the year ahead
