All The Young Dudes - Mott The Hoople - perfect build up to a class vocal - the coda's not too shabby neither.

Sweet Jane - The Velvet Underground - the guitar fiddling then the loping crunch of the opening chords - Mott The Hoople's version's not too shabby neither.

Layla - Derek & The Domonos - 39 notes takes you into a heart rending vocal, someone mentioned Bell Bottomed Blues earlier, that was the B-side of the single and was utterly perfect.

Once Bitten Twice Shy - Ian Hunter - the single opened with a wide-mouthed 'Allo' followed by a lazy Chuck Berryish guitar intro - then there's the introduction to the song by Hunter, the guitar riff soothing you along - then - drum roll - THEN - Mick Ronson smashes in with that thing he used to do with his guitar and it takes off and up and it don't stop until it ain't got nowhere else to go. Casual genius.

Keith Richards is the absolute king of the intro. Check for the Rolling Stones' Jumping Jack Flash the way the opening chords draw you into the song straight away. Pure genius. Then there's Brown Sugar, Get Off My Cloud, Can't You Hear Me Knocking, Bitch, Satisfaction etc etc. I could list more but we'd be here all day.

    • So let's never do anything that might improve an area, because it will just be dragged down to the level of what's presently there? Is that what you are saying? I don't have the time or the inclination to do the research, but I'm pretty sure that I have read  that when people who had lived in a very run down area  were given  nice surroundings, they appreciated and looked after them.
