Yo La Tengo's ninth effort was a actually a bit of an odd one.

Still very good but not very YLT.

Vaguely surprised they didn't do it as a side-project release like the marvellous two recording session, garage effort Fuckbook by The Condofucks.

And yes SJ, I almost posted that one myself.

I don't think you'd ever find a 'pure nine', but the closest I can get is probably Lou Reed's Street Hassle, because there are so many utterly abysmal efforts along the way. Not to mention some of the worst album covers ever (for a a major artist at any rate).

Not that Street Hassle is a great album exactly, but the main ten-minute track of the same name makes everything worthwhile. You just have to make sure you get to the stop button before 'I Wanna Be Black' starts - and ruins everything again.

Nooo ? I like Zooropa. A ballad with Johnny Cash singing. And the falsetto thrill of Lemon? It?s a fun album. And that?s not something you can say about U2 often

I?ve long been a non-fan of U2, but Achtung Baby, Zooropa and the much-derided Pop, have genuinely great stuff on them

All of the other albums I can pretty much leave (although I like the title track from Unforgettable Fire. And some of the Passengers stuff)

ok i was harsh, i liked some of zooropa too, but i think it's the start of them becoming parodies of themselves and pretty much when I lost interest.

No time for the early tuff then? War can transport me right back to my youth and it still sounds fresh today.

when they gave up the "european" stuff and claimed they wanted to reclaim being "the best rock band in the world" again, that's when they became parodies of themselves

No time at all for the first three albums I'm afraid. I'm not saying there isn't anything good on them but lordy they are earnest. And they do transport me to a time and place - but not a great one

Prince's ninth, Diamond and Pearls, not my favourite and probably his last great lp.

Felt's tenth, Me the Monkey and the Moon.

Yo La Tengo's eleventh, I am not afraid of you and will beat your ass, best title ever hands down.

Acid Mother's Temple thirty fourth, Lady Pink Lemonade. Had to wiki that albums position.

I'm finding it hard to find bands in my collection that get beyond their first or second album, yet alone a decent third.

There are a few tho' that shine with longevity (Super Furry Animals, Ash, Boredoms....)

"Also Bert Jansch's first album, considering he was like 19 and all, and allegedly people starting reconsidering acoustic guitar as an instrument and how it could be played (so I read somewhere).

Shame our days with Bert are drawing to a close."

Darn it. Many a true word said.

He died this morning aged 67, lung cancer so I'm told.

Gutted.

That was the brief, absoluteley true of the 6ths and 9ths, but then you'd be hard pressed to actaully find tht. It's hard enough finding bands that made it to 9 at all.

Agree about most of the 3rds, though some pretty good efforts at it tucked in there. I did say it was hard, in fact it was more a musing if any existed!

    • I've noticed the foxes are very frisky at the moment, it's mating season. Perhaps it was a male fox who saw you as a danger to his vixen and wanted to see you off.
    • I’m not sure how many other people have experienced this; but both me and one of my friends have the same story. Around Crawthew Grove and Crystal Palace Road: I was followed by a large fox right on my heel. At first I didn’t notice because I had my headphones on, but then I noticed my shadow had an extra lump in it, funnily enough, it was a fox, very very close to my feet. Even if I sped up walking it just tried to get closer - it was quite frightening actually, it was quite clear that it wanted to nip me. I didn’t know what to do so, I started to reprimand the fox and walked slowly away from it, facing it - which it didn’t seem to like and backed off a bit. I then proceeded to speed-walk away.   Quite frankly, the whole situation was quite embarrassing and a little bit frightful as I’d never had a fox even come up to me. I’ve heard of particularly curious foxes that might come up to someone who beckons them, and maybe even bite that person, but I’ve never heard of a fox chasing someone. The amount of confidence that it had was incredible.    When it happened, I was on the way to see some friends, and once I had told one of them, she told me the same thing happened to her.  if anyone else knows anything about this bitey fox then let me know!
    • Another recommendation for Andy. I needed an old kitchen removed as an emergency. Andy came over quickly and did a fantastic job. I have used Andy a few times. He is punctual, helpful and always does an  excellent job.
