I got a quote for a new clutch (between ?400-500) this is from Dulwich Test & Service Centre on Hindmans Road. I normally go there and think they give a fair deal. He said I should try one of the big Clutch Replacement Service Centres where I might get a better quote. Does anyone know what a fair price is for a new Clutch I have no idea. My car's an old banged up '96 ford mondeo

Thanks for your advice

Difficult to know for sure but I recently had an aircon pipe replaced by them. The bill was ?400 of which ?150 was labour. Their labour charge is ?50/hr +vat but I know for a fact that it took longer. VW garage quoted ?560 for the same work.

Banged up or not the parts may be expensive and you are looking at at least 2 hours labour. A Spec**list clutch place may well do it cheaper as they would have a more specific supply chain.

Some are cheaper, so me are a lot more!

I just had my merc done for ?450.

It's just one of those things you have to stump up for. Sadly....

I shall try South London Clutch Centre for a quote, I've got that hard decision as it's due it's MOT and a needs a new clutch an I don't know whether to get a new car or spend approx ?600 (including MOT) on getting this fixed. The trouble is the car's probably only worth about that much but it has a recently new engine and good bodywork and to me is worth a lot more than what I reckon I could get elsewhere for ?600. I don't know whether it's better the devil you know.

    • Simply, give us a snap election now as the last 12 months in office honestly have not been great in any sense. Let someone else have a go at turning around UK plc before it's too late. At least the last administration had the inflation and unemployment rates going in the right direction at the END.
    • Yes but what's the answer, Jazzer? No government can simply walk in and fix the economy - get the bills down, grow it and reduce debt. There is no silver bullet. The public (and the press) wants everything now, everything cheaper, but with better public services and lower taxes.  In the radio and paper, all you ever hear is pundits, MPs, think tanks and economists saying what won't work, but no one seems to know what will work.  I'm genuinely interested to hear what other views people have on here, and what they think will help, or make things worse.
    • While they struggle with economics of UK plc, collectively we all suffer as a result of their ineptitude.
