Please say its not just me getting older but WTF has happened to them?

If you lived in a city*, you'd at least know that you were never far away from one ... complete with stern/lovely* (*delete as appropriate) caretaker in a swirly psychedelic patterned apron. They wouldn't dream of spritzing you with designer perfume or demanding money from you either.

Now there's nowhere to go unless you pop into a cafe or a bar? And even then you can only use the facilities on production of a receipt in exchange for that magical pin code. Or the exact change.

*If you lived in the countryside, no problemo!

I think you're all onto something there....

Perhaps I'm harking back to a long-forgotten, er, 'golden' era of public conveniences with attendants that just don't exist anymore. Okay the soap and the bog roll wasn't best quality but at least it was better than nothing.

Maybe I need an 'app' to alert me to the nearest one? I must be old-fashioned. Hate those new metal box things where you can't open and close the door by yourself. The ones on trains are awful now too.

I won't use the new ones on the trains, after getting stuck in one & not being able to get out.

Another time, I saw somebody push the button on the outside, the door opened, and there was a person

sitting on the toilet in full view of all the passengers!

Bring back the old fashioned toilets with proper manual locks - far less stressful, and I would actually

be able to travel from A to B without avoiding coffee or liquid refreshment, for fear of

needing the loo!

I think it's a disgrace that what was a standard question when I was a kid would now be a question with no reply - "where's the nearest public loo ?".

They were everywhere and they were free.

Nowadays I guess businesses take up the bulk of the burden, I don't think the huge numbers that used public loos just stopped peeing because the loos vanished !

It's an outrage, esp in early hours when nowhere's open.

Maybe it partially explains the 'orliquid'squid' thread (the filling of bottles, not the dumping..).

Naive comment from Maxxi, have a few kids and try traipsing round shops and cafes after dragging your kids away from the swingpark looking for a loo that'll fit you and all the kids in while you attend to the child that wanted a pee 15 mins ago.

Interesting. This is a list of public toilets from Southwark Council. For those people entertaining the kids on Googse Green, I've highlighted the nearest loo ;-)

Just an observation kk - I didn't offer an opinion as to whether it was right or wrong or even disgusting or perfectly understandable - I know having kids must be an absolute hell but don't let your paranoia get the better of you.

There's definitely one in Penge

( it's a bit weird though )

And there's lovely signs for two in Crystal Palace but they've blocked the actual "bogs" off.

I know there's one in Rustington. It used to say "Clive Scrimshaw is a bender" on the inside of the door, above the crudely cut hole filled with Izal loo roll.

There's was one at Littlehampton train station with a massive rubber-jonny machine inside the narrow entrance "This machine is alarmed" it said on the outside. I used to cycle an 8 mile round trip for that one.

Under the Sea lane cafe in Goring-by-sea there's also one . When the tide comes in it gets a bit damp in there, so the bog roll tears easily.

If I can think of anymore, i'll let you know.

NETTE:-S

There use to be one in dulwich libary park, but got taken away years ago, i know its anoying espesially when some ones init, usually you can just walk into a pub now, as pubs are a public house and you should be allowed.

some of them arround tho,but not in dulwich ive seen, but they have a time limit and can open up.

God forbid you need a pee outside those hours.

The ones at the library aren't locked. You used to have to ask them to release the access door but they stopped that a while back. You could also try:

Cafe Nero (in the absence of a Starbucks or MacDonalds, both of which count as public loos in my opinion)

ED Warehouse indoor market (on the left side of the ground floor about half way down)

Sainsburys

    • Sorry, not having a dig at Southwark for that.   I'm just shocked that next door they've chosen to abandon such an institutional community / family event so they can keep pumping out commercial stuff instead.   I suppose the same could happen here next although we don't really have any longstanding family events like that one.
    • No doubt the schools in Harrogate are being discussed on the East Harrogate Forum or whatever. Dulwich College is being discussed because it's local. Saying "ooh, there were loads of schools mentioned" is a bit dismissive. It was Dulwich College that referred sex abuse allegations about pupils to the police and Dulwich College that used the spectre of the police to suppress dissent. 🤔
    • Hi, I was just wondering what experiences any of you have had in relation to an Independent Panel review relating to the Permanent Exclusion of a SEN child. 1. General experience Any experiences, positive or negative, in general? 2. Clerks Associates UK Any experience of this entity acting as an "independent clerk" to an Independent Review Panel in a matter involving a Permanent Exclusion of a SEN pupil, also involving discrimination under the Equality Act 2010. There is limited publicly available information with regards to this "independent clerk"; however, I can see from their Annual Report & Accounts at Companies House that they are a small, privately owned organisation.   I am very concerned that there is a clear and material risk that they are highly dependent for their revenues and cash flow from the business that they receive from the school and its parent Trust (which has 9 schools in total under its management) who have appointed them. I also note that the Trust has a material employee relations dispute with their staff over underpayment of maternity pay whilst materially increasing the salaries of the highest paid Trust executives and other highly paid staff (presumably the Head Teachers). https://southwarknews.co.uk/news/community/teachers-at-six-charter-schools-walk-out-in-first-of-four-strike-days-planned-for-this-month/ Given the current situation, we have no choice but to engage in this process of an Independent Panel Review; however, we are concerned as to various elements including this one which is a key role in providing independence. 3. Independent SEN expert We have the right to an independent SEN expert to review the matter and provide their opinion to the Independent Review Panel. The concept is that this person is supposedly acting "independently" and also solely in respect of the SEN elements of the matter. We do not however know who this person is, their experience or level of independence. The last information that I can find in the public domain about the effectiveness of an Independent SEN expert is a UK govt report from 2014 which portrays a very mixed experience for parents. Hence, we are seeking to understand if anyone has any more recent experience of an Independent SEN expert in relation to an Independent Panel Review. Many thanks for any thoughts that you have based on your experience. For reasons of confidentiality, it is perhaps better to send any replies to me directly. Many thanks
