All you need do is look for 'country of origin' on the packaging,

e.g. in the Spring I bought some watercress and once I got home and put my specs on saw it had come from Florida, well, that can't have been sent by boat, can it.

Cut flowers present more of a problem to trace back to country of origin. Mixed bouquets use supplies sent through a central Dutch hub, assembling and distributing worldwide....by plane.

More shops prominently label UK grown things now, so we can choose.

From fl0wer's post it seemed to start-off complaining about the noise of planes overhead in ED, then unsubtely morphed into a "food comes by air, this is wrong" ticket.

Getting back to 'planes flying over ED, it's funny that;

a. You can't complain about the noise to Southwark because it's not classed as noise pollution.

b. How ever many flights that go over you don't have any say in the matter - and it's getting worse.

c. All the people moving to ED must be deaf and/or at work all day seven days per week, unless they love that sound.

d. Heathrow's situated on the wrong side of London - so what the hell!

noted a lot more air traffic of late..sure to due with still in peak season abroad..early evenings are super busy over Ed flights so low can often see colours on plane tail.

however when wish go on holiday have use plane's .

Though do agree 4:30 tad early usually we here them around 5 to 6 am...

Am assuming maxtedc lives on Maxted Rd??? So do I and having had baba no 1 about 2 years ago, and having to get up in the night, from about 4am those planes keep coming in thick and fast, a few minutes apart like they normally do during the day - no 1 or 2 slipping through. I had no idea they weren't supposed to and it has always annoyed me since as now you're aware of it, they do make one hell of a noise. Also, are they getting lower??? I swear I could never read the writing on some of their bellies when we first moved to the area 5 yeasr ago, during the day and while i was in the garden. Now it seems its much wasted potential advertising space given how low they seem to go - again contributing to the god awful noise.

I have said before on the Forum that basically Heathrow is in the wrong place and the flights will nearly always have to make their final decents over us because of the wind direction. Sadly, that's it, but I did read in this week's free Finance News (available outside East Dulwich) station that in 1974 there was a proposal to build a new major airport in the Thames estuary which would have created many new jobs and would have established a new town of 600,000. Also, it would have meant that a big proportion of flights would have come in over the sea from the east, thus taking the pressure off of Heathrow and us, by now. Guess who strapped it, the idiot Labour government of the time.

Other news in that paper was that at the City Airport they ARE starting to build another runway to increase flights. So, we will have many more of those twin prop light airliners whizzing over at tree-top level soon.

Where are the emergency exits again?

Ugh... So glad I found this. I am not a light sleeper at all, but airplanes kept me awake from 5-6.30 ish this morning ... At one point I worried they were skimming the top of the roof!

Sooooo noisy, do they rotate flight paths?

I had no idea one can complain, and will. But realistically, will it make any difference?

Thanks Fabfor, did you mean the "Flightpaths over S.E. London" attachment?

Couldn't get the map at a large enough scale to really see where the flightpaths were .... Duh.
