Annette Curtain
I love the SummerBut I dread getting bitten by MosquitosWeirdly up until a about 4 years ago I was fine, a bite came and went in a few days. However, one day I was bitten on the leg by a Horse Fly whilst in Horniman's Garden. Within about an hour my shin and ankle were massive and I could hardly walkIt was quite nasty, but I got over itNow though what happens is:If and when I get a Mosquito bite my body over reacts and my leg/arm swells, along with my glands, and to top it all my liver aches somewhat. I'm then prone to getting a skin infection and have had antibiotics each time, bar one. I've even developed Cellulitis twice, which is agony, quite dangerous and puts me out horizontal for a couple of weeks And all this from a tiny itsy-bitsy Mosquito bite !Thankfully, through the forum I've discovered the ninja of all products Avon Dry Oil spray, and it's been a life changer. But it's only good for about 98% protection and yesterday I was bitten again. So on we go.I've wiki-diagnosed myself:-S and thus far i've come up with Skeeter Syndrome, which as syndrome names go is pretty snappy(I am waiting to see a specialist btw )Has anyone else developed anything simular ?(or am I just a freak)Nette:)::o:-S*swats imaginary mozi* Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/23737-pesky-mosquito-bites/ Share on other sites
RosieH
Is Skeeter that curly haired weirdo from some American school programme? If I were going to have a curly haired weirdo syndrome, I'd go for I think. Jah Lush
The last mosquito that bit me is receiving constant round-the-clock treatment in the Priory Clinic. Barry Road Barbers
Poor Nette, I feel for you as I am the same, though not as bad. I too swear by Avon dry oil body spray and it has worked for everyone i have told about it. I also never got bitten or maby never reacted to bites until 8 years ago. My Doctor told me that some people can devlop certain reactions as they get older. I have devloped a chronic reaction to insect bites which was brought on, in my case by a snake bite which i was lucky to surive. I got amune to over the counter allergy tabs, so now my doc prescribes stronger ones which i can take daily and if i get bit nothing happens. The main reason for infection is scratching, which i know is virtualy impossible not to do. Voyageur
I started to develop an over-reaction to mosy bites a couple of years ago. Not as bad as you Nette but enough to keep me awake at nights for a week or so plus very inflamed around the bite. Thanks for the tip re Avon Dry Oil. My current anti mosy bite arsenal includes mosquito net pinned over bedroom window so I can keep it open at night, antihistamine tablets in my handbag at all times so that I can take one immediately when bitten, an ammonia stick and/or one of those electric cell thingies used around the bite to lessen the infernal itching and hydrocortisone cream if it gets very inflamed. You could also try eumovate (stronger than hydrocortisone and also available without prescription). jimmyraj
Exactly th same happened to me a couple of years back. I was bitten by something on my ankle, not sure whether mosquito or horse fly, and a couple of days later my lower leg swelled up to extra large proportions to the extent I couldn't fit a shoe on and couldn't walk. I went to the doctors and had to take a course of steroids, in addition to anti histamines, to help reduce the inflammation.Since then, I have reacted fairly badly to all bites - although not to such a degree that the leg has swollen again. After a bit of googling I stumbled across the Blandford Fly. I wonder if that might have caused some of my bites.... Barry Road Barbers
Yes Nette a snake bite would be a good hand in bite poker but am sure it could be beaten. I never fancied getting bit by a camel, and heard it's not good. And yes, I am sure a camel can fart. TE44
I've found crushed parsley rubbed onto mozzy bites works really well, if I cant get it fresh I make a strong tea out of dried parsley, and apply. A plant is handy. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/23737-pesky-mosquito-bites/#findComment-549669 Share on other sites
Huguenot
I think that with a major reaction you probably need to go hardcore pharmaceuticals, but for a few hints and tips from the tropics...Scratching is the worst thing about mozzie bites - it's very much an unconscious habit, so if you can force yourself not to do it, you'll stop doing it and the problems will subside a lot lot sooner.White tiger balm (the cool one) has been an absolute discovery - it makes the mozzie bite feel cold for about 20 minutes, just long enough to stop yourself fromm scratching.Anti-perspirant has aluminium in it, and this makes the swelling go down sooner, and so the itching subsides too! Use a roll-on. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/23737-pesky-mosquito-bites/#findComment-549672 Share on other sites
OliviaDee
take brewer's yeast (a B vitamin) during the summer. They really don't like the taste - you'll get bitten less - promise! Barry Road Barbers
I never drank red wine, but i often taught that I started to get bit around the same time that I started to drink red wine. (I drink it by the bucket load now) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/23737-pesky-mosquito-bites/#findComment-549905 Share on other sites
Sandperson
There are Blandford flies at the Herne Hill velodrome. I got bitten a while back and I don't normally react to bite but this was nasty. They can get very badly infected. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/23737-pesky-mosquito-bites/#findComment-550174 Share on other sites
